The Great Decapitation Game

Today's story is essentially made up. Historians don't know virtually anything about the great cities of the Maya (explicitly, Yaxha) during the period I talk about, nor precisely how the ball game operated and why it was played. But I wanted to tell a story about the unifying history of sports, and this is crafted out of the most up-to-date research. To put it simply, I just wanted to tell the story.
A bit of a filler episode, I know, but I still hope you like it as much as I liked filming it!

I originally wrote it that way but I decided to go a different direction with it and not make it too over the top, as chances are an up and coming talent wouldn't be sacrificed for no real cause. In my original script it was at the fall of the city and he was sacrificed alongside a foreign team, but it wasn't truly believable in the research I did, so I rewrote it. I left that video up on Nebula, however, rather than this one, as I intended to release this 2 weeks ago (when I started retooling). Kind of like an easter egg, I guess.

Something occurred to me. In most places with tales of the underworld, there's not much to base them on. A few caves, here and there, and maybe a specific one is said to be the gate to the land of death. But there's no world under there, and everyone knows it. But not on the Yucatan Peninsula. Every single river in that region flows underground. The entire area is riddled with caves, sinkholes, cenotés...gates to the world below which everyone knows to be real. It's not hard to imagine gods living down there. What else could have carved such a network of passages?

I don't know if you narrate audiobooks, but you should. You are _such_ a wonderful storyteller! I come from a culture where the storyteller, the bard & the minstrel once ruled supreme, and as I grew up and learned of them, I realized that I was still in that culture, only they had different titles. Actor, playwright and pop singer (or opera, depending on your tastes). A small country full of such talent that there are two massive festivals, alongside countless smaller, local ones, dedicated to song, poetry and its recitation; one is the national (aka "the nash") and the other is the international one, where different countries send their great choirs to sing in their own language. Pavarotti came when he was a teenager; iirc it was his first performance in another country. His first international competition, I'm sure. At the end of the festival the one deemed to be the greatest poet wins what is to us, even better than the equivalent Nobel Prize. I'm not talking about the Eisteddfodau to distract from the video. I'm mentioning it because its whole existence is of great meaning to me, and I can see in my mind you reciting a poem at the International Eisteddfod, _yr Eisteddfod Ryngwladol,_ (I assume that's part of that festival; I've only been to/participated in locals, many years ago. I now live "in exile" - England - which is a cultural desert compared to where and when I grew up. Shakespeare? Who he? 😉). I can see in my mind's eye that you would hold the crowd thoroughly enraptured. The music in your speech is very melodious and I cling onto every word. Thank you for yet another awesome production. I know it's fiction, as you said, but it became very real to me.

This is going to sound like hate, but as a writer it’s a genuine compliment. Even in my fascination with the art of literature, I can’t add any new praise to your talent at weaving storytelling and modern history so beautifully, that much has been proven. But I’d like to say that I love this video so much in particular because it feels like you tell just the story. You offer no solution, not even another perspective but that of the hypothetical young boy. I say again though, this is a compliment. So often when writing stories as commentaries I wish desperately to offer a solution to the beautiful complexities of horror humanity frequently tangles itself up in, but so often, if ever, I can’t. In this video, you can’t either, or at least you don’t. You simply lay out the story in all its beauty and its horror. And that silence in the end, that silence that answers my burning question for a solution to it all, that silence that says “I don’t know how either,” it’s the sole comfort I can have in a tale as harrowing as this one. Thank you, even just for that.

I know this is a year old, and the views have been kinda low, but I really, really wished you had said "And tomorrow, it was your king who was laid upon the alter" or something to that effect, it really was a back and forth thing in mesoamerican and I think its really sad that people had to live through that.

I want that t-shirt! It reminds me of a t-shirt I once had. It said "this is not reality" on the front and had a red composite that looked like my throat was cut open. It was on a white t-shirt. It looked gruesome! I trolled people with it

Un-related but the capitation part of the word decapitation sounds very similar to the occitan word for head "captaus" and in Albanian central dialects the word for head is "kaptin". Which might be because these are all Indo-European languages but most people forget England once owned half of France especially the areas where occitan is spoken and even took Albania from the byzantines for a couple of decades. It just hit me now for some reason. Though to sorta sneak back into topic, will you ever do a series on Europe again?

I love this so much. I desperately want a film set in some Central American precolonial civilization, just something. It doesn't have to do with the death of the civ or colonialism, in fact, better I think if they're set properly before the conquerors show up or the civilization collapses. It doesn't have to be anything big and grand, although it could be, it could be inspired fantasy or historical fiction, just something, because it feels like there's so few movies set in this fascinating set of cultures. Imagine a film following the life and exploits of an Aztec Jaguar warrior as he goes on flower war campaigns, or about an especially temultuous day in the life of a Maya priest, or a more careful, slow paced, deliberate film trying to get us to really feel and care about the corn and the ancient gods of the corn. Better yet, TV shows showing off a little bit of everything there is to show. That's why I love this video so much, it feels like a short sports film about a ball-game player, and I love it. Short, sweet, to the point, and the setting is so cool! Great work as always.

Thanks for the deep insight this series of videos have given us into the Mayan religion, and by analogy other meso-American religions. They are a welcome change to the superficial, sanitized descriptions of religions we usually receive. richard -- "All of us are atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in, some of us just go one god further." - Richard Dawkins
