I noticed you don’t have the festool Bluetooth hose remote. Honestly it’s a big time saver and it also saves your back from keep having to bend down and turn on the vacuum.

This is exactly what I was looking for as I made 3 barn doors and didn't want to use the clunky wheel guide for the track. Wanted the cleaner approach and this was it! Thank you.

I wish I knew the right words to express the gratitude for the knowledge you share. I made a miter wing by ripping a closet door in half and can batch cut rooms of trim like never before. My GC went from saying "no don't do that we don't get paid for that" to "you're already done?" Without sacrificing quality. The instructions for the last barn door track I installed actually read "Plow a 7mm groove in the bottom of the door using a chain saw". Unfortunately I'd left the stihl ms251 at home

On occasion I have replaced the plastic blade with a stud made from a drill bit shank. Select a drill bit that fits your slot nicely then drill a hole in the floor and resin the drill into the whole leaving the shank protruding high enough to engage with the door.

You have helped me more then anyone in my last 20 plus yrs doing this! I've learned more from this guy! My work has just improved tremendously! And so has the pay. I never realized how many things I was taught were just were incorrect. And oddly enough I realized it's harder to do it the wrong way! Wish youtube was around 20 yrs ago!

This is a very helpful explanation of issues for installing barn doors. I'm going to do my homework and prepare for all your classroom lectures this semester!

@insidercarpentry We used the DeWalt Compact cordless router with edge guide and the Whiteside upcut bit using wall mount slot hardware to install the barn door floor hardware this weekend! Thanks to this video, and watching it MANY times, it went flawlessly!! After 18 months of the door swinging back and forth with no floor hardware I was able to make it look and work perfectly! We have LVP flooring, and avoiding installing hardware directly into the flooring was a priority, but was unsure of an alternative method until I found your video! This method also avoids high traffic trip obstacle since it is totally invisible and out of the way. We are SOO grateful for your expertise and taking the time to bring DIYers along successfully!! You are the BOMB!! Thanks again!! 👍😍

I did a couple of those doors recently and fumbled around with a big router and not an upturn bit…just bought the Milwaukee battery router and it came with an edge guide, and now have a few upcut bits. Thanks for showing us your methods, it helps a lot.

Never had the pleasure of installing this type of barn door setup, but whether I was doing one, or a hundred, I wouldn't be without that Dewault with the upcut bit and guide!

Great video Like how you gave a few options on making the groove. I have to say I use the biscuits jointer and run the groove all the way. I haven’t had a builder/homeowners say anything about the groove on the ends. As long as it is a nice crisp groove with no tear out. Easy fix with painters tape

Router guide with spiral up cut bit is my go-to as well. Great to see some alternatives with pros and cons. Oh, and I made the brilliant mistake of through-cutting the track slot on my first custom barn door. It’s in my master bedroom and it taunts me every time I walk past it.

I wish I would have watched this when you published it. I hung a barn door in March. I used a router with an upcut bit like your preferred method.

I like that spiral bit option. A lot better than the skill saw option I went with on my only barn door install. lol

Great informative video as usual. If it were me dealing with the radius at the end of the biscuit joiner, I'd just run it out the end and fill in the slot with a piece of 1/4 scrap glued in and painted white. I'd have some premade and painted, so a dab of glue and I'm done. In your case 24 pieces for 12 doors. I'd also file a slight bevel on both edges of my base plate so as not to snag the surface or and protective tape.

Tried the Dewalt dust attachment it works pretty good for that router

I use a T slot router bit and router as close to the end as I can. I’ve never had any problems with the guides I use from Amazon. Most guides don’t go that far on the outer edges anyways by the time you install a handle.

I've always used the drill first and chisel the points out first a few inches in and then used a couple passes with my 6.5 inch Makita circular saw because I always have those 2 tools on hand and I can rip a straight line without needing a jig or anything but never thought about using the biscuit joiner before. I might have to give that a try cause it has a tighter radius. Really need to get that cordless Makita tho since that's my primary battery platform. I've been using an old sears Craftsman corded one lol.

I used my Biscuit Joiner before for the same thing because I didn’t have anything else with me. I thought I was a genius for thinking of it. So we are either both Geniuses or I’m not as smart as I thought I was..😂 The 1/4" drill bit for the end is a good trick. Great Video!

Wow I was gonna say when you showed the first 3 methods why not use a spiral up bit on the dewalt. I should buy that edge guide you have and the dust collector but was planning on getting a router table. Been getting by these past 2 days using a scrap piece of wood and quick clamps as a guide/fence. Been making dattos and rabbets with just the spiral up bit and the scrap wood with my router turned upside down. 2 clamps on the bottom to sandwich the battery with 2 2x4s to make a stable base.

I made myself a sub base for my router using a 10mm bit if perspex then in base added some slots so I could add a fence I then can use router on its side and use a standard router bit and still be very accurate

Whiteside has various cutter widths that they offer for the same arbor that you have for the biscuit size cutter.

Great video ....maybe use your oscillating tool instead of drilling out the ends possibly. Assuming you have that with you (can't leave home without that tool haha)

Like +Ed murrill, I vote the router, up-cut bit and fence. FYI, a vac accessory is available for that Dewalt portable router, giving you a dust-free cut w/o the cost of Festool ;9)

What if you roughed the slot with the biscuit jointer and then finished it with the router in a single pass? The big slot cutter on the biscuit jointer should be pretty efficient at roughing that slot.

Easiest way is too buy a door with the groove already on it... I just don’t like that sometimes they don’t leave a 1/4" worth of material on each edge of the door.

I think I'll give this a try but first I have to get the cobwebs off my biscuit joiner.

Why not use a 1/8" chisel for the 2 ends?

Surprised the door didn't come already plowed out. I made my barn door and ran the bottom rail threw the table saw with a dado blade ,good thing I looked at the hardware first I never would have thought of it

What do you think of using your Festool domino to square up the ends of the slot after your biscuit joiner?

Great demo! I'd think it would only be a matter of time before the floor guide busted out the bottom edge of the door, unless you left 1/2" from the slot end to the outer edge. Kids slamming doors would bust that out in a heart beat!

The track stop is the stop. Not the floor guide.

My vote goes to the router, up-cut, and fence.. A wide fence board (the part that rides on the door face) makes it easier to hold square and push... (my fingers are stiff from age some days😀) I confess that my dados are open on the end....making them blind is a neat detail. The majority of the barn doors I've done have been stained dark though, which camouflages the open end. 12 barn doors!...a lot for one house.....luckily for me, they have been less frequent in the last year or so.

Thanks for showing these different techniques - Very helpful. I’m wondering if there is an aluminum rail that would slot into that groove? I would think over time, especially with a compressed wood core you wood get bits of wood flaking off as it bangs into the guide. That being said, I am personally not a fan of barn doors as they never seem to close flush and leave a gap on either side. I’ve been in a couple of hotel rooms that for some strange reason they put these on the bathrooms leaving close to a half-inch opening between the door and wall when it was fully shut, meaning zero privacy! I guess they may do this for folks with mobility issues, but for me a big no.

Mobility issues aside, a sliding door allows more layout options in a smaller space. Barn doors are cheaper than pocket doors, since the wall doesn't have to be built twice and the pocket can't have any electrical or plumbing inside of it. For a hotel room it would really depend on who you're sharing it with if privacy is an issue. A married couple or someone alone will likely leave any door open anyway, and so the pocket door is just there for the rare bigger family or guest.

Why not just put hinges on the doors, and frame / jamb, so they shut flush with wall? I dont know its just the way we do it out here. Seems to work good.

Do what I do, throw away those crappy plastic things and buy a wall mount roller style. So many reasons why. Cutting that slot is a PITA. You have to mount that plastic crap to the floor, what is you have carpet? I get the ones with the cylinder roller that is part of the wall mount and only has the ones roller on the bottom flange, this allows you to get the door closer to the wall whereas the ones with the two rollers on the bottom flange; the door has a larger space from the wall at the bottom.

I use my cordless circular saw.

Since the dado is blind, how do you install the metal guide dead center? I was thinking tape it to the bottom of the door when you install then drill it in? Better than trying to center it then hanging the door and hoping your measurements are dead on. Thank you for the video!

I put the door on the track, let it hang freely so you can see plumb. I mark the center of the door on the floor. Take door off. Install guide. Put door back on.

The battery adapter is probably just a random dewalt to makita adapter off of amazon, there are a lot of different brands but they are all the same.

I find that dumpster works best for barn doors. Great video though

I put the guides on the outsides of the door .

I prefer the chainsaw and pickaxe

Never even thought about using a biscuit joiner, I always use a 3/16 double flute bit with a trim router and a fence.....but this video has me wondering if the festool domino joiner would run down the door 🤔

Why not just use your1/8 Stanley bench chisel from your kit to shape the rounded slot to a square cut with a simple plunge cut followed by a back bevel clean out in the slot? Simplier, faster than cleaner than a drill.

How high off of the finished floor are you setting your barn doors?

Isn't there supposed to be a gap between door and floor? If you have 1/2inch gap between the 2, then you can route 1/2 inch deep on doors.

I dont think the domino is the type of cutter that you'd wanna slide across a piece though. That could create some mean kickback. Atleast with a router your bit is solid.

If you keep your slot closed at the end of the door, aren't you limiting the range of the door? It won't fully open or fully close because it will stop short on the guide.

Rick Hissen……. Yeah, I’ve hung a number of these doors and you have to run it out one end or the other if you want to ever remove the door without a massive amount of disassembly. And you always end up removing the door for a bunch of reasons, like painting, laying new flooring, or moving large furniture or appliances through the narrow doorway.

If you're installing it correctly you would just need to remove the track bumper guides from the top of the door and it will lift right off the track. Takes less than a minute.

Most of the barn doors I hang already has slot cut in them I've made a few doors myself and routers out all the way next time I'll do it this way I like not seeing slot

Why not make a new base for your router, then screw a piece of wood to that base to act as a guide and then you can put a straight 1/4” or 5/16 inch straight bit and ride it along to create the slot and then you won’t have the radii of the router bit to drill and/or chisel out.

Are you routing without safety glasses on?

You need to run the groove out at least one end of the door so that the door can be removed easily if needed without having to disassemble the entire hanger mechanism.

No you don’t. That looks ugly. Removing the door only requires removing the two plastic bumpers from the top of the door. Then it can be lifted right off the track.

They don't seal tops and bottoms of doors in the cold county? That definitely doesn't work here in Arizona those doors will be warped in a week solid core or not

@@paulfrederiksen5639 every door interior and exterior are supposed to be sealed all 6 sides even hollow cores. Jeld Wen and Masonite won't even honor warranty if they're not sealed even cheap interior doors. It's stamped on the tops of the doors stating this

IMO that is just an out for the door manufatrurers to not have to warranty any of their doors. Keeps them from being blamed when someone leans them up against a wall for a month. In my market thousands of doors are installed a day and I guarantee none of the painters are painting the tops or bottoms... and the world keeps spinning. I've never found it to be an issue on paint grade doors. Hardwood doors are a different story.

@@InsiderCarpentry I agree but I'm in Arizona so my region as dry and hot as it here when the monsoons come (as little as that is) you'd be shocked by the amount of expansion and contraction of even hollow core interior doors. In 25 years of doing doors and trim here I cringe every time the rains come..keep up the good work happy new years to you and your family!!

I see the bottom of door isn't painted, chances are the top isn't either. Voids the door warranty.

The best thing that you can do is talk your clients out of them. This is a fad that is going to be so dated that people will soon regret the mistake when they installed these doors.

How do you not justify using the festool? The dust alone is justified….you are a professional and are breathing in all that dust everyday think long term man because with out your health life isn’t worth living.
