The Great Buffalo Roundup at Custer State Park

On a last minute tip, we changed up our plans to experience what we were told was a once-in-a-lifetime experience - the annual Buffalo Roundup at Custer State Park in the Black Hills of South Dakota. 1300 bison are herded by cowboys and cowgirls into pens for an annual health checkup.
Though it was cold and muddy, we had a wonderful time, and have a few tips for you if you're looking to give it a shot.
The Buffalo Roundup happens the Friday of the last weekend in September each year and is accompanied by an arts festival that spans the whole weekend.

The Buffalo RoundUp was such a great experience. You can hear us discuss it some more, as well as the rest of our visit to Custer State Park on the RV Miles podcast: rvmiles.com/episode-62-the-black-hills-custer-state-park-and-the-buffalo-roundup/

Thanks for coming out to the Roundup, it was a cold damp morning for sure. As a flag bearer for the roundup, (American Flag), I'm always glad to see people bring kids out to the Park and the Roundup. Glad you enjoyed it!!

Great video, one of those things your kids will be telling their kids about years from now. They’ll undoubtedly leave out the parts of their complaining about how cold they were!

👍👍. Many years ago while with a group on horseback studying the wild horses survival we came upon a very large group of wild bison. Even though on a ridge far away the ground shook as they were running as wolves chased them. It was such a thrill to see after reading in old family journals I’ve been blessed to own reading stories of men on trains shooting randomly for sport killing so many. Not certain how many great aunts she was writing the stories of their trip to Gold country on that train but the pages had wet spots as though she was crying. They didn’t know that the cars in back had all those men in them and wasn’t told that it was going to happen. But she had nightmares forever and described the scene very well. Several journals later another female became part of a team to save these majestic animals speaking before Congress. Several pictures though faded showed the disaster that is history. I have my own personal history books with these amazing journals and several pictures. You will always remember what you saw and how close it was to be gone forever. Conservation is important and so is the health of our country’s water land mountains and skies. We should be funding all the studies to keep it going forever. We’ve been gifted all of this and it’s our job to preserve it. 👍👍👍👍👍

That was great. We missed seeing a similar Bison Roundup at Antelope Island State Park in the Great Salt Lake by one day. We are going to Custer State Park in May.

J J You’ll love it. We had such a wonderful time in the park, and there’s plenty to see and do, plus the Blue Bell campground is great. Enjoy!!!

Just think, 150 years ago that valley would be wall to wall thick with a herd of bison. One of many herds throughout the plains and mountains.

Dang, that looks amazing! We went to Custer to camp earlier this summer, we might have to go back to check this out late September this year if they are still doing it this year.
