The Great British Bake Off is such a lovely, LOVELY show! And I am so glad the creators of this musical decided to take this theme/concept seriously and treat it with the respect it deserves. I feel like, if they had gone the route of parody/poking fun/treating it as something silly, it would not be receiving the raving reviews it is now. They have stayed true to how genuine and heartfelt the original material is, and that makes me so happy and relieved.

“You’re The Top… as opposed to being a soggy bottom” Your best work. You’ve peaked. This is it.

Challenge: how many food/cooking/ baking puns can fit in one intro

To hear that Claire Moore is in the show, has given me great reason to see this. My first show that saw her in where she played Audrey in some performances, was the Original Little shop of Horrors, at what was then The comedy Theatre now the Harold Pinter theatre. I have seen in other things over the years. She is always amazing.

Well, that's a blast from the past! My dad was Mushnik in that production, opposite Claire (and Ellen Greene). I practically lived backstage at the Comedy Theatre for a couple of years during the original run. I also remember Claire in Phantom and Saigon. The praise for her in this video is well earned. She's also a lovely human being.

@@kitsworld I loved your dad in little shop. I knew Harry's work in theatre and film such as Barry Lyndon and The Blue Max. I saw the show a couple of times but I never got to see Ellen Green. Claire was amazing though.

I have heard really good things about this show! I hope it extends because I hope to be in London this summer and I would love to see it. I don't think a show like this will transfer to Broadway. Would love to hear a full-cast recording. Also, Scott Paige is in it!

Sadly it won’t as there is a show going in straight afterwards but I could see it going on a tour.

Saw it tonight - agree with a lot of your comments - the first act had me tear up but the second act just felt a bit too long and didn’t feel like the emotional stakes were as high, probably because it didn’t have the cry moments u mentioned. Also loved that they were selling cupcakes and it was so refreshing to see older cast being given great songs to belt out. There are so many British references that i think it would not translate well overseas.

I went to see it during the previews and I can only echo everything you said. The emotional moments truly hit me and are just done so thoughtfully, to see some of the topics raised in this musical were completely surprising but felt so powerful! Just wish I had time to see it again

i recently went after your recommendation and wow it was so good! i went with my mum and sister, and while none of us are big bake off fans, we all loved it! i really hope it makes a return!

Is it normal for a West End show to have such a limited run? I was really hoping to see it when I'm in London in late May, but it looks like it's closing a week or so before I get there! 😥

I LOVED SO MUCH THIS MUSICAL !!!! Watched it last evening Friday the 12th of May and today Saturday the 13th is the last day, and feeling tempted to go and see it again tonight. Everything is perfect about this show. I. loved the details about each character and all the profound touching moments. I loved the little girl, the songs, the scenario, the colours and the cast are exceptionally talented. A-MA-ZING !!!

I came to the UK for Eurovision and learned about the show whike planning the trip. Omg the show was amazing and almost was the best part of my trip. I super hope the show comes back or is recorded, iv been playing it on Spotify non stop.

I have been following this show since your first review. I was thinking for sure you would give it 5 stars. However, we have the same sensibilities and I know now why you gave it 4! Soon as I saw the song, My Dad, on their youtube channel, I knew you would be crying when you saw it! I sure wish I could come to London to see it but my travel expenses go for NYC. Maybe it will come to the US. We love the GBBO too!

Saw this tonight and loved it! Really wasn't sure what to expect (especially as I've actually never watched the TV show...) but I really loved it - it was very delightful. The only disappointment to me was the ending didn't quite work for me, it felt a little bit of a copout. But overall I was hugely pleasantly surprised which is always a delightful experience at the theatre, and I liked how much the audience around me seemed to be enjoying it as well - always great to see a new musical landing so well with people

Had a lovely time watching the show, it was everything I'd hoped it would be! I ended up feeling a little bit like the writers had so many great ideas for what to do, and they don't yet have the experience to throw away the bottom 20%, so they tried to keep everything in, and the top 80% suffered for that. There were often times when they set up an idea, reinforced it, and didn't pay it off because they were too excited to jump to their next great idea. I imagine this is something that improves over time, you have confidence in letting your ideas breathe and letting people take them in fully. For example in the Handshake Song, it feels exactly like a white boyband from the 2000s singing a love song, wonderful parody choice, especially with them bringing their chairs out front and sitting on them while singing. I think the song needs a third chorus with a key change up and them standing up, to really drive home the parody. But again, they had too many ideas and not enough running time, and so they jump right to the next thing, rather than fully rounding out the joke they're going with. Izzy's storyline also feels a little flat to finish, and I assume again it was because they had too much else to do and couldn't give her a proper resolution. I think the show would be worse to drop her storyline, but there are other bits that could have been cut to really give her motivation to change in the end. All of this comes from someone who really enjoyed the show, and I'm excited to see what they do next as well, because the issues I have feel like teething problems for writers who are full of wonderful ideas, but just can't let go of those ideas to let the main ones shine.

Coming to town for a 3-day weekend in 2 weeks. I don't want to watch this review yet as I'm thinking of seeing this. Do you think I need to have seen the television show to "get" it? If so, will a single episode suffice? Not sure I want to put in a lot of effort, flying in will be enough lol. BTW if you need any NYC tips, especially relating to show tix lmk.

I wonder if the breaking the fourth wall moments are meant to replicate the Talking Heads sections they would normally have on the TV show (not seen the (stage) show, so I don’t know the context/how exactly they do it, but from what you said maybe that’s it)

As an American, I've always referred to the show as the Great British Bake Off, and I've never heard anyone else say otherwise. I wish this show would transfer to New York, but at the very least I look forward to hopefully hearing a cast recording!

A few days ago you asked a question in your video about the Bonnie & Clyde about what factors people have for choosing to go and see a musical. Today I booked tickets for GBBO musical. My thought process went: Sceptical it could be any good, basically ignored it, even skipped this review when it was published because I had already decided I wasn't to go see it. Then yesterday I spotted a poster for it at Kingston train station. Or rather I spotted John Owen Jones name and I looked to see why. Then I saw another poster which said it was a limited run. My interest was piqued. But not enough to take immediate action. My friend/ go to theatre person today contacted me about seeing something else and I mentioned GBBO. Tentative agreement. Came and watched your review to check that it wasn't terrible (I already had high expectations for JOJ). Promptly booked seats. Spent more time trying to decide where to sit then deciding the buy tickets! I have no idea what the music is like for this show.

This show sounds like such a delight. I don’t know, I feel Bake Off is popular enough in the states for a tour at least, no?

Speaking of musicals based on TV shows, did you ever see Acorn Antiques The Musical? I'd love to hear what you think of it. I believe it's available on DVD. 😉😉😘😘x

I added The great British Bake Off to the 4 shows to see on my trip .I was not keen even though JOJ was performing .Your review gave me some hope but did expect much .How wrong I was ,the vocals were superb . The writers deserve great credit and I never lost interest . In all I have to agree with your review but give it ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐This show and Abomination [ Rebecca Caine ] were my 2 highlights .

As an American I should note that we actually call it "Bake Off" as well. It just gets listed as "Baking Show" and they refilm the intro. But we all know it's Bake Off.
