The only kind of self published book I've read was a literature thesis project (I think that's whats called) of a girl on KZread and Spotify named Clara Tang, her book is called Burns: when anger comes home and its a poetry book, and it's the only time I've ever cried reading poetry, I was so surprised I touched my face and it was wet from the tears I didn't notice I was crying, I'll always recommend it

Ok, here’s my answers! 1. A self published book: i cant think of one rn! 2. imo yellowface by RF Kuang has SUCH a good premise but just was a bit soggy in the second half 3. Pride, Prejudice & other flavours by Sonali Dev - I never DNF but OH MY GOD was this a struggle to get through, the main characters had NO chemistry but suddenly love eachother, i didn’t care about any of them except the girl in hospital and the main family were just mean and angry for no reason?? 4. Just read the first Heartstopper! 5. Hijab Butch Blues by Lamya H. A memoir on Lamya’s life as a nonbinary queer muslim person - the linking of passages and people within the Quran with her own life was very interesting, and as i have no personal experience with islam it was explained and quoted in a way that is easy to understand! A good read for the current Trans Right Readathon this week! 6. I’m glad my Mom died by Jennette McCurdy - I didn’t grow up with disney channel so have only seen brief clips of her time there, but didn’t need to know anything to enjoy this emotional memoir! And it’s good as an audiobook or physical copy! 7. Honestly…The Tracy Beaker books by Jacqueline Wilson, and just JW’s work in general - it’s SO good and nostalgic for me 8. My personal favourite trilogy from childhood which i hope to re-read soon is The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart - brilliant, nerdy books with a great cast of characters! (Ok its 4 books + a prequel, but it was ORIGINALLY a trilogy) 9. I cant think of any 🤔

    1. Amateur bake: A book my teacher wrote called The Dog Fighter. It was pretty good! 2. Soggy Bottom: For me it's Piranesi by Suzanne Clark. I felt like the plot was intriguing at first but got boring after the reveal and didn't explore enough about the fantasy world it was set in. 3. Bingate: Currently I might be DNFing Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. I'm 250 pages in but the characters have no depth and the story doesn't feel cohesive. 4. Junior Bakeoff: The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. This was and is my favorite book of all time. 5. Hollywood Handshake: Definitely IT by Stephen King. I was amazed at his writing skills since this was the first of his novels I've ever read. He writes like he has actually lived through the story and knows exactly what's going to happen next. No detail feels out of place 6. Signature: I recommend any Agatha Christie novel because they're all fun and fast paced. I think anyone can enjoy her novels too since they aren't very hard to read and they leave you on the edge of your seat. 7. Technical: idk about this one lol 8. Showstopper: Phantom Tollbooth (as I said above) and Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin. Baldwin is such an amazing writer, I've never read anyone like him before. He writes in a way that cuts straight to your soul and leaves a mark 9. Finalists: I've never actually read a trilogy, though I plan on reading Lord of the Rings in the future.

Amateur baker: I don’t actually know! Soggy bottom: The fate of the Tearling - it just felt so disappointing and unnecessary # bingay: A danish sci-fi called “Patheon-sagaen” - I met the author and he was so nice, but I just couldn’t get through it, there was too many plotlines/universes/characters crammed into too little space Junior Bakeoff: Percy Jackson my beloved Hollywood Handshake: Good Omens, but the book. I had no clue it could be so well written and dramatic but also so hilarious A book you’d recommend to friends and family: The Picture of Dorian Gray is an all-time favourite I’ll recommend to anyone Showstopper: anything Tolkien, yes including the Silmarillion, and also Song of Achilles The Finalist: …Lord of the rings An extra slice: the Silmarillion or The sun and the Star I am more of a fantasy nerd than this channel, I think, but I still wanted to share xD

hey Jack! I just wanted to let you know that Boulder by Eva Baltasar (which had me mesmerized as well) is part of a trilogy! it isn't necessary to read the books in order because they are separate stories, but they share common themes and Baltasar's writing style is just... exquisite in all of them!!! I don't know if the third book (Mamut) has been translated yet, but at least you should give a try to Permafrost!

    1. Amateur baker: Far Away Bird by Douglas A. Burton -> I don't know if this is self-published because it does list a publisher... but one so small that there were *no* results for them on google lol. So I feel like it counts? It's about Theodora of the Byzantine Empire and it's an incredible (if somewhat dark) historical fiction. I really wish it got more love. 2. Soggy bottom: Not a book, but a series: The Innkeeper Chronicles by Ilona Andrews. Books 1-3 are tons of fun, but book 4 has a different main character and it kind of fell flat for me. There's apparently now a 5th book from the original storyline so I might have to return and see if it lives up to expectations though. (I actually did think of a book which is also technically a series - Dante's The Divine Comedy. Inferno was good but after that... downhill.) 3. #bingate: Room by Emma Donoghue 4. Junior Bake Off: Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt (middle grade novel about a girl with dyslexia) 5. Hollywood Handshake: It's a short story, but A Madman's Diary by Lu Xun (from early 20th Century China) 6. Book to recommend to friends and family: Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi (I loved it and I actually gave it to my aunt for Christmas, who also loved it). 7. Showstopper: I refuse to answer haha. I have very compartmentalised faves like "childhood favourite" "favourite YA" "favourite for entertainment" "favourite for thinking" etc. etc. Favourite book this year so far is 🌟Dallergut Dream Department Store by Miye Lee🌟 though. 8. Finalists: I read so few series recently (lots of unread first books and discontinued ones though, admittedly) and I prefer duologies or longer series, but as a kid... the original Percy Jackson trilogy? 9. Extra slice: I guess this means like books in a series where you can also read them as standalones? Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire is good (I didn't read the rest of the series - yet, anyway - but even as a standalone this was really good).

    1. Nothing Left to Lose by Kirsty Mosley 2. The House Across the Lake by Reilly Sagar 3. Argyle by “Elle Conway” 4. The Golden Door by Emily Rodda 5. As Good As Dead by Holly Jackson 6. Beach Rivals by Georgie Tilney 7. The Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead 8. Ashes by Ilsa J Bick (but yes also the hunger games) 9. The Assassin’s Blade by Sarah J Maas

Amateur baker: I don’t actually know, I don’t think there are any self published that I’ve read. Soggy Bottom: Neverworld Wake - good at the beginning but got way too long about in the middle #bingates: Neverworld Wake again - it really annoyed me how slow it got in the middle and I saw no reason for it to be like that. Junior Bakeoff: Heartstopper 5 - absolutely love it. Hollywood handshake: Orlando - the narrative is so captivating and I was so interested in Orlando’s journey which I don’t get so much. Friends and family: The Song of Achilles - the story is simpler to follow as it has mythological background and is beautifully written. Showstopper challenge: Lolita - such a rollercoaster but worth it, every page is a piece of art. Favourite trilogy - I haven’t read many and the one I have enjoyed the most is Cruel Prince trilogy - I stand by these series even though I accept its flaws. Extra slice - After Dark - such a great story that can be read at all times and is one of my favourite short Murakami stories.

    1. Amateur Baker: if I'm being honest, I don't think I've ever read anything self published 2. Soggy Bottom: The Mirror Visitor by Christelle Dabos (not a book but a series, but the ending was so random and unrelated and I thought it deserved better) 3: Bingate: Kiss Her Once For Me by Alison Cochrun (I will definitely finish this at some point, but I stopped halfway through for now. I love charm offensive and wanted to love this, but I had so much disconnect w the characters and their motives) 4. Junior Bakeoff: The Ranger's Apprentice by John Flanagan (I've randomly been talking about this series w some friends recently, and we all agree it deserves more attention) 5. Hollywood Handshake: Human Acts by Han Kang (the portrayal of humanity genuinely blew me away, especially bc I have family w connection to the subject matter) 6. Signature: And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie (I think murder mysteries are the safest to recommend to anyone) 7. Technical: I don't think I've ever read a book without knowing what I'm getting into tbh 8. Showstopper: Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë 9. Finalists: The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare (for nostalgic reasons) 10. An Extra Slice: How The King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories by Holly Black (honestly was just the only companion book that came to mind that I actually entirely enjoyed)

    1. A self published book: Drawing Mr. Darcy OR Courage Rises by Melanie Rachel (basically a Pride and Prejudice variation) 2. Soggy bottom: Harry Potter the Deathly Hallows by JKR (that epilogue man...) 3. #Bingate: I didn't DNF it but I did DNF the series - two series - after the first books: Maze Runner by James Dashner and Divergent by Veronica Roth 4. Junior Bakeoff: The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein (really Junior); Shadow the Sheepdog by Enid Blyton, From the Mixed-Up Files of Basil E. Frankweiler by EL Konigsberg , The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin (middle Junior); Julie of the Wolves trilogy or On My Side of the Mountain trilogy by Jean Craighead George (late Junior); The Complete Collection of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle (a formative favorite of my pre-teen years) 5. Hollywood Handshake: Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi (to deal with so much and yet retain the ability to convey her story with so much... humanity and creativity); The Disappearing Spoon by Sam Kean (one of the first nonfiction books I've ever read that was just. so. ENTERTAINING.) 6. Book for Friends and Family: The Red-Scarf Girl by Ji-Li Jiang (culturally... super relevant for my family and just... beautifully written and heartbreaking memoir) 7. Showstopper Challenge: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (absolutely gorgeous and one of my favorites of all time); The Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas was a guilty pleasure favorite classic; Pride and Prejudice/Persuasion by Jane Austen (lighthearted favorite classics); The Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner; All the Tortall and Emelan books by Tamora Pierce; The History of Love by Nicole Krauss (a beautiful, gentle piece of genre fiction that I absolutely fell in love with); Kindred by Octavia Butler (gave me the shivers in a way that few authors have ever done); What the World Will Look Like When All the Water Leaves Us by Laura van den Berg (remains one of my favorite short story collections of all time still); Digger: the complete series by Ursula Vernon 8. The Finalists (Favorite Trilogy): A bit of a cheat since I basically included ALL of her books above in showstopper already, but outside of her Immortals quartet, Tamora Pierce's Provost's Dog trilogy remains up there for me. What she managed to do in this prequel trilogy in terms of enriching the world building creatively while tackling some tough issues with a protagonist who felt matured compared to prior protagonists that it felt comfortable to me to read. 9. A Favorite Slice (Favorite Companion Book): Hmm... I guess it depends on how I'm supposed to interpret this? But if we mean the books that are released to contain errata to accompany a main series, then it's definitely Tortall: A Spy's Guide (George Cooper) by Tamora Pierce - it ties into canon so creatively and was so cleverly designed... I guess if I had to choose a runner up then MAYBE The Tales of Beedle the Bard by JKR

Junior Bakeoff: I used to read Jacqueline Wilson all the time, so probably any of her books 5. Hollywood Handshake: The Bee Sting by Paul Murray - so clever, I loved it 6. Signature: I've been recommending The Rachel Incident by Caroline O'Donoghue recently. Kind of Sally Rooney vibes but with more likeable characters (great on audiobook with an Irish accent) 7. Showstopper: A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

I'm not sure if this has been explained previously, if it has then please forgive me, but have you read the novel Stoner by John Williams?

Amateur baker: Rose Point/M.C.A Hogarth I really like the worldbuilding. It's so intricate but it makes sense without infodumping. Junior bakeoff: Ramona and Her Father/Beverly Cleary. Beverly Cleary was amazing, the Ramona series is the best and Ramona and Her Father is my favorite Ramona book. It does such a good job showing how life impacts a child. Hollywood Handshake: A Time to Dance/Padma Venkatraman. I kept on forgetting the main character wasn't real and going to look up her Wikipedia page. Also, I think it did a really good job of explaining Hinduism, which was a central part of the story, without it being too spiritual to understand within the plot. An Extra Slice: The Darke Toad/Angie Sage. It really adds to the emotional depth of the story, but nothing that you can't get from the books, but it obviously has more tome to flesh it out on a surface level. It's also funny in a scary way.

The Finalists: A favourite Trilogy HAS to be the Broken Earth Trilogy for me. I used to be obsessed with the Hunger Games too, but N.K. Jemisin's sci-fantasy series changed me! Absolutely would recommend for that politically-tinted dystopia with badass women (and casual queerness) ❤‍🔥

Jack, sorry if this seems very demanding of me (and I know, VERY VERY stalker-y) but I am really sad to see that you haven't been updating your logs on to thr Storygraph for quite some time. At first I thought it may have been because you were taking a break of any online reviewing (since you haven't really done any specific book reviews here on KZread too, for some weeks) .. but then today I noticed you were updating your goodreads account pretty frequently. Since Storygraph serves as my main platform for logging my reading, I look at your reviews/ratings almost always before adding a book in my tbr. So, would you please consider updating there as well? I hope it's no burden. Thankyou 🎀
