The music pays tribute to the Grand Review which marched down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. on May 25 & 26, 1865. First day was the Army of the Potomac all turned out in new uniforms & orderly ranks. Day 2 were Sherman's Westerners -- the Armies of Georgia & The Tennessee -- the Bummers with tattered uniforms & slouch hats & contraband cooks & pioneers all with the easy step of men who had marched 1,000 miles while the bands played a new tune --- "Marching Through Georgia."

This was a parade in which the U.S.Colored Troops were not allowed to march. Despite helping the Union to win the war a separate parade was later held in Penn.for these brave veterans of USCT

The only one I could find is this one: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pqKJt8ZtnKTHc7w.html It's really strange that it wasn't ever covered by e.g. Bobby Horton or the 97th Regimental String Band, given their extensive catalogs of Old Time and CW period music...

Lincoln saw it all as an (internal rebellion) "within" the Union. There was no "Confederate" soverign political entity. Only a nation troubled by a element out of the control of the laws of those states. He really saw things that way. You could keep the slaves,(but in only the very early first slave states, not the new states!), because that was in the Constitutional area of state laws of the Union! ....The whole thing is more complex than I thought.

ps: Lincoln did agree to one request from Davis. That ones fighting for the illegally ceceded states would not be treated as common criminals by the government of the Union. This was the official deal. but I know crap happened on both sides in those camps. Sad.

Most militia units, before the War, were military marching and drill social clubs, and they could pretty much design their own uniforms. Cadet Grey was popular, North and South, and blue and buff Revolutionary uniforms were also quite popular. The rifles they carried were next best thing to surplus, from the Army, bores badly pitted from firing blanks, and not cleaning them...

Most Civil War regiments, both sides, had marching bands. They would serenade each other, between battles. All these songs were popular, at the time.

The band members served as stretcher bearers during battle. One regimental colonel would assign defaulters to the band as punishment. The regiment took pride in having the worst sounding band in the division.

Lincolns words>>"This union is indestructable"! ...........If he had aknowledged the "Davis Republic" then it would be an admission that the "Confederacy" was a true political soverign entity. IE: A genuine new nation divorced from the union. And Lincoln could not let it happen!...............Slavery was the last thing on anyones minds at that time.
