    I live in Paris. The most remarkable thing about this vast infrastructure program is how virtually invisible it is: apart from a few open construction excavations across the whole of Paris, it is largely happening quietly underground.

    Well, line 14 has been shut after 8pm 4 days a week for 3 years now, and an additional 3-4 days every few months for 5+ years. I live near where it runs and there has been an open worksite for ~2 years, many places in the suburbs (Orsay, Saint Denis, and pretty much everywhere the new lines will go) have similar sites, the expansion not going intramuros makes for very little work there. I'd have to agree it's well managed and most of it is actually happening underground but there are still many excavations along the planned routes.

    In Massy the line 18 is mostly invisible. ( well there's that stuff being built in the middle of all the other stations at Massy-Palaiseau, but it's tucked between the RER B maintenance hall rebuilding and the RER B track maintenance depot rebuilding... And the Tram-Train 12 line works were more obvious. Now I agree that there's areas where the GPE work couldn't be missed and were disruptive.

    Well I live around Saint Germain en Laye and I can guarantee you that when I take the car to go to Paris by Porte Maillot, we see the big thing that it is since many years now but I heard that we are soon arriving to the end of it for there. But of course it’s nothing compared to the others 90% percents of the project that’s being done underground everyday.

    “simply going from north to south or east to west takes too much time” anyone who lived in Paris will tell you that it is literally the best use case of Parisian public transports. The RER does just that. The problem is going from one suburb to the neighboring suburb without going through Paris

    As a Melburnian it seems like we have similar issues - all of our train lines go through the centre. Our inner suburbs are served by light rail but the outer suburbs are only served by inefficient buses. Luckily we have started working on our own metro loop, which will potentially cost more than the entire Grand Paris Express and will create - a single metro line. The first section should open in 2035 and the project should be done by 2050 - assuming that the car loving conservatives don't cut the project if they ever win. Gotta love Australian infrastructure efficiency!

    Yeah. Its a similar case in Copenhagen. Very radial transit network with the S-train (our RER equivalent) going in and out of the city centre and a metro within the city centre, but if you wanna go across the suburbs without entering the city, you'd need to take a slow bus that gets caught in traffic and is often overcrowded. All while Greater Copenhagen has 1½ orbital highways but no orbital rapid transit outside of the S-train F-line at the very edge of downtown, which is too far in to be useful for most circumferential trips. Thankfully this is being adressed here in Copenhagen, first by a 28km long tram/light rail line that run on Ringway 3, which parallels the Motorringway 3, the busy orbital highway here. Thats scheduled to open in 2025 and the first of 29 brand new trams for the line just arrived by truck from Siemens. In the longer term there are also 2 Bus Rapid Transit (or BHNS in french) lines planned too and currently having Environmental assessments done. One further in than the tram and one further out, acting as 2 additional orbital lines that'll likely open around 2030, along with other Bus Rapid Transit lines proposed in other parts of the city (even though trams are better).

    A genuinely ambitious project, if France pulls this off it will be immensely impressive and make Paris the premiere destination for good transportation infrastructure in Europe, I can't say I'm not a little envious of what they are doing.

    Yet Berlin has already an all encompassing system with sky trains, busses, trams, underground trains, regional trains that all run even at night during the weekend. In Paris the trains stop at midnight, if you live outside you have an imposed curfew.

    @@akiraraiku Unlike in which city? The trains don't stop at midnight in Paris, the night buses take over, and more importantly the network in Berlin that's mostly the outdated tramway. Apples and oranges. The S Bahn and the metro that's only 25 lines in total. Let's not even get started on the coverage.

    As an American I'm incredibly jealous of the scale of this project and how quickly the French are able to build it. Building even a single metro line in the US today would likely cost at least as much as the entire Grand Paris Express network and would take 20+ years from inception to completion.

    My local is moving ahead with adding a new entrance to an existing station- a hole in the ground essentially. The cost of the hole is $117 million dollars. The RER is faster than our interstate train network, the Paris metro is faster than our express trains, and our bus networks on down are just laughable. I'd like to be more like Western Europe, but people in the US would rather drive full-sized work trucks to get groceries.

    Litterally. The proposed Blue Line Loop in DC (being considered but no decisions about whether it will actually happen yet or not) says it will cost over $30B and wouldn't be done until late 2040s. It's not as ambitious as this, but by American standards it is pretty ambitious. We'll see if it happens though!

    Congrats! I just stayed in Paris for 3 weeks, and I have to say the metro there is quite awful. It was loud, smelly, overcrowded. However I found that Metro 14 was very clean and not overcrowded. You are very lucky!

    My brother lives in Saint Ouen, near a RER C line, but using the ligne 14 which opened 2 years ago is so much better. It is just not very good in terms of opening hours due to all the construction works being done

    ​@@teemo8247 Most of the smell is due to the Paris soil being filled with lines of gypsum and sulfur which react with water infiltration and produce that fowl rotten egg stench. Keep in mind that a good chunk of the metro is at aquifer level or below. Especially the whole Opera - Auber - Haussmann - Saint Lazare gigantic underground complex that has its own wind system. It tends to disperse into the myriad of tunnels and corridors for miles. They have progressed a lot in the suppression of the smell, but it's extremely complicated given that geology and chemistry tend to always win against mankind.

    Aside of this massive project, the line RER E is extending by 40km to the west (on partly existing lines), a direct connection from Paris to the Charles De Gaule airport is being constructed and few tramways and buses lines are being created (day and night service !). In 2030, the network will be very different from now, can’t wait to use it !

    The French can do project like this primarily because their government is not "owned solely by and for the rich," but rather with far more than "lip service" for the bulk of it citizenry. The French have more/less "got right" the balance between capitalism (with its profit incentive), "versus," public spiritedness and a deep passion to protect France's culture, heritage and future. Sadly here in the USA that balance is totally F****ked. Here insatiably, acquiring ever more loot by the super-rich is the ONLY public value.

    @@jeanjacques9980 i lived there for almost ( years. It just too exhausting to travel from one touirst spot to another. Sometimes you need to walk 15 mins yo go through the dense forest to the bus station or walk 30mins to the nearest strain station. They not connected at all.There are places where only buses are availabale ,there palces that you can travel only by train;) while in France you can travel in anywhere and sometimes not even getting out of the station. and worst in London they could change the bus route anytime specially when theres celebrations around the london tower or hyde park ;)

    No unfortunately, this applies to France too. One of the major differences is that the French complain, go on strike, and grumble all the time... Crises are not uncommon and politicians, if they care about their seats or their heads, sometimes make actions more oriented for the people....but most of the time it's for the super rich.

    @@VICTORIA-M-A Couldn’t agree more, transport in U.K. is dire compared to France and Germany. Huge fuss in london about recently opened Crossrail line. Paris has at least five RER lines with the first opening in the late 1970s and the lines are capable of accommodating duplex trains.

    That's not part of the "Grand Paris Express" That makes it even cooler that the Grand Paris Express is only a part of the infrastructure and public transport investments of the Paris area (massive RER extensions, new tramway lines, biking infrastructures, an express train to Roissy Charles De Gaulle airport...). I think all of these massive investments will really pay off in the long term for the attractivity of the region (and not only the city center)

    @@huguesjouffrai9618 did you listen to the video? The introduction claims that because people in the periphery of Paris don't have access to the metro, they have to resort to using cars. Nowhere it mentions that trains exist for those longer distances, which is quite absurd for a video on public transport in Île de France

    ​@@abelsuisse9671 What we call RERs are just commuter trains for the rest of the world. Not part of the subway system proper RERs run above ground, have stops very distant from each other and long waiting times. At Etampes, there are only two RER C every hour. Parisians like you with reliable RER A and B don't realise how the rail system is unreliable elsewhere

    This is very impressive. Been to Paris many times and love the Metro. During rush hour, sometimes one train goes out the station and you can already see the next one coming. This addition will make Paris a transportation wonderland;-)

    and for students it costs only 375 EURO (around 340-350 dollars) a year and you can move to every station, take every line of metro, tram, bus, RER as many times as you want

    Inter suburbs links do exists: trams & buses mostly. But yeah still room for improvement on that front. Also, going North to South or West to East isn't hard. Sure you need to go thru Paris for that but that is still the most direct route possible. Grand Paris will be great for West to North / South or East to North / South mostly.

    FYI, à 0:19, the map only shows Greater Paris (Paris, the 3 departments of the Petite Couronne and a few towns outside) Ile-de-France is much larger. The planned changes to the metro and RER network go beyond greater Paris. There is also the extension of the RER E planned to be finished in 2026 (instead of 2024), not included in the Grand Paris Express. It's quite common transport problems, deleted or delayed (but it's not only in Ile-de-France) with TGV and TER for exemple.

    @karevilen Yes, it seems to me that it's Nanterre La Folie in April 2024 and Mantes in 2026. I've heard about it for a long time but I'm still waiting for it in Mantes. At the moment, I mostly see traffic interruptions on weekends for that.

    "Greater Paris' isn't really a good translation for "Grand Paris" as Greater something usually means the whole agglomeration. Grand Paris is considered the inner and part of the mid rings of suburbs, not the whole agglomeration nor urban / metro area containing the outer suburbs.

    Projects like these should rightly be celebrated, even if they do inevitably go over budget (19m to 36m is quite a jump). Here in the UK, transport projects like these (such as HighSpeed 2 and Crossrail 1) generally are threated with cancelation if costs overrun, irrespective of how much the country desperately needs them. Crossrail has revolutionised travel through London just as the Grand Paris Express will revolutionise travel through Paris when it opens, here's hoping that it doesn't get cancelled or scaled back.

    19 billion to 36 billion isn't just cost overrun, the project has been gradually expanded. There are about 10 sites per line that are seeing cost overrun with each site costing tens of million more. Covid-19 cost the project a few hundred millions. The budget will probably continue to rise by a few billions and some estimates are still way too conservative according to some experts. The recent bout of inflation is probably good news, generally, you wanna build before prices rise. Infrastructure projects built in the 2010s look good value today and will look cheap in the 2030s.

    I from the Geneva area but I am so amazed by this. I will definitely go to Paris when it's done, my last time in Paris was not so great so i'll be waiting 😂 The Paris infrastructures are quite impressive already, this massive addition makes it one of the biggest transport system on earth, I think this project will completely change the city and people's lives.

    I find it incredibly impressive. French engineering and capability to conduct such mega mega projects are just sensational. Love the design of the new stations, so pure and futuristic. The French have never stopped investing in their infrastructure and basic services. Something Britain should have done. Our infrastructure are crumbling. Within the next 10-15 years, Britain will look seriously primitive compared to France. It is already the case, tbh, but it will be even more striking.

    Been to Paris twice and I do love how you can use the subway so easily and fast and get anywhere without needing to walk for miles. Though sometimes it's a maze. And also the ticketing system sucks when your used to the dutch OV chipcard system.

    The ticketing system sucks. I totally agree with that. I'm speaking as a Parisian who's lived in London and Berlin. In Paris, you have to have a picture on your metro card but it doesn't count as an ID and you can't just download an app.

    You went to Paris in the 80's? Because it's been a while that you can have a pass on a card or on your smartphone in Paris. Even the Tourists can use both. You can also buy your ticket by SMS.

    ​@@alpha791 You can use the exact same system as in London which doesn't require any picture. That's called Navigo Liberté or something. You can also simply buy your tickets on the app or by SMS, no picture needed. Even if we were still using paper tickets I'd rather have that than paying the ridiculous fares we have to pay in London. The Navigo is valid as an ID card in certain circumstances. Sure you won't make a new passport with that.

    I lived in Paris all my life, and will return there - although I now live in another, much more transportation-challenged European capital. My place happens to be towards the edge of the existing Metro (subway) network, but very close to the future hub Saint-Denis Pleyel. It is easy to understate how much of a transformative impact some of the new stations are going to have. Transforming entire communities. Saint-Denis Pleyel planning includes a new bridge over raintracks that currently divide the urban fabric (those are the tracks that connect Paris to the north of France, Brussels, Amsterdam, Cologne, and London). The opportunity to create new urban hubs outside of the core of Paris is unprecedented. To a suburbs dweller, it feels like our areas are no longer considered the backyard of the big city, where the industry and warehouses are, major roads and rail tracks lacerating the territories into pieces. Instead, the hope is that our areas will be made to feel a bit more like the core of the city. The original idea behind this was in fact to change the way greater Paris is organized administratively. It makes no sense to have an urban area the size of London's, while the core city is only 2M strong. Well, politics would not allow that to change (and there isn't an overwhelming popular support for the idea anyway), so what is left is this huge project. A final word: all this does not make sense, and should not obscure, other transports and mobility-related projects in and around Paris,such as new tram lines, expansion of bike lanes/roads...

    We need this in London. Outside of the inner london area, transport between the suburban boroughs such as Merton an Bromley is practically impossible by train, without going up to one of the terminus stations in the centre and transferring back down. A ring railway aroud these outer boroughs would do wonders not only for London but for the entire country; train trips between large cities around london could simply go around it, instead of having to go to a central terminus and changing. The Paris Grand Express puts projects like Thameslink or the Elizabeth Line to shame!

    There is Crossrail 2 a north-south version of the Elizabeth Line which was on the cards, but who knows if it will now happen, with HS2 being cut back, infrastructure spending is hugely expensive in the UK. But would also agree, that most uk city and large towns operate a centralised system, you have to travel into the middle and then travel back out. We need some ring systems to allow people to move as well (this is why north and south circular roads and M25 were built for road traffic, we need the same now for Rail type traffic.

    I live in London, but after all the money spent on the Elizabeth Line the next major such project should pass to a regional centre. I'd like to see better rail infrastructure connecting Manchester to Liverpool, Leeds, Bradford, and Sheffield.

    I live in Palaiseau on my university campus south of Paris right next to the Palaiseau metro stop on line 18 and a big portion on bridges about 20 above ground. The construction site is really impressive and they have even offered visiting days to see them up close which I found really impressive. There are also some viewing platforms accessible to see the construction site better. Overall the project is really put forward by the government and it will help a lot of people which is really great.

    The fact they are building more than 5 lines and other projects at the same time and they are going so smooth and without disturbing neighbours is mindblowing. In Barcelona we are still waiting for lines 9 and 10 to get finished. I guess RATP has some saved resources.

    This is grand. Will seriously ease commuting around the Paris Region. It's great to know that by 2030 all things being equal, several residents will be able to connect to other regions of France without the need to get to central Paris

    There will probably be a delay but yes it is a very good and fast project. It will reduce car trafic, connect better suburb-suburb, etc. It is expansive but worth it.

    It always made me smile how we always focus on what's not working for us, and what's working well for others. I imagine "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence". Although it's a pessimistic mentality at first, I think it's what allows us to improve in the long run.

    Au niveau transport en commun on est plutôt des pioner dans le genre, c'est justement les pays voisins qui nous recopient, donc ce que tu dis n'es pas pessimiste mais juste faux+ce sera justement quelque chose de super si ça permet de vider un peux les transports en commun déjà existant, je sais pas si tu prends les transports en commun a paris, mais c'est juste l'enfer parfois tellement y a du monde, et pourtant c'est tout aussi bien étant donné que c'est gens sont dans les transports et pas entrain de conduire individuellement tous une voiture sur les routes déjà remplie de paris, donc je vois vrm pas ce qu'y gêne..

    This is very impressive both in scope and in regard to engineering technology! I'm quite jealous actually that we in Germany don't have that. I live in a heavily populated area (the Ruhrgebiet), but good public transport is something I can only dream of. I wish Germany would invest more into the future like France does.

    @@Kollum That is just not true. Pretty much all cities over 100 000 inhabitants are heavily investing in transportation infrastructure, from Renne's 2 Metro lines (for a population of 200 000), to Montpellier's extensive Tram lines, with a new one opening later in the year.

    The Grand Paris Express is NOT about 200km of track but about 200km of LINE (400 km of track). This line length is 100% in tunnels with up to 21 tunnel boring Machines working simultaneously. There are additional line extensions and open air lines

    Hello, I am a french living in Pantin. Just north of the 19th Arrondissement of Paris in Saint-Denis (93). The prolongation of the Ligne 14 to the North really helped to make my life easier for my trips between my university Paris 8 to the center of Paris to meet up with my friends, go to the cinema etc... Before I had to use the Ligne 13 and change to Saint-Lazare to take the ligne 14. It was awful and slow. Usually with the time invested to go there and the time staying in paris, It was not worth the effort so I went back home without doing anything, annoyed that my friends could go there and have fun easily. Now it's over, I am very thankful. And the prolongation of the RER E between Saint-Lazare and La Défense will be incredible. Just a straight trip, no need to change twice the subway like I used to.

    thats france. the grand nation, think big, go to future, a country full of visions and clever ideas. thats transport-system for the next century! phantastic project, full of innovations. i am verry fascinated about this project. all german authorities should visit this new trasport-system. maybe they find a lot of inspirations for the puplic transport system in germany which is actually absolutely awfull, inefficent, slow. the german public transport system is based in the aerly 70 th of the last century. my full respect to the french government an the coutry of france!

    The map you're showing at 0:23 is NOT ile de france, it's Grand Paris, and it's around 800km2, not 12.000. It's quite obvious from just looking at it that the area named Paris is more than 1% of the whole map (which it would have to be if the whole map covered 12.000km2 as you claimed.

    Amsterdam built a 9.7 km metro line, which took 15 (!) instead of the planned eight years, and cost €3.1bn instead of the original estimate of €800m. Arguably, Amsterdam is a very challenging spot to build anything, let alone an underground railway, but also arguably, Amsterdam has never managed to build a metro line and not **** up somehow. Could be worse, though: could be HS2. I _love_ Ligne 14. The last time we were in Paris, we had a hotel a couple of minutes from the terminus of Olympiades. The escalator worked one day out of the week we were there (our son, who does not speak French, thought it was "horse service"). Other than that, it's beautifully designed, and it's just great sitting at the front of the train, which runs completely automatically.

    I live near Versailles, in the southwest of Paris. For me, this project won't really change much how I travel to work. I am using the regional trains (line C) to go to work at the border of Paris (station Issy Val de Seine). But it will make it much easier for me to go to the Orly airport. I regularly go there to take a plane to Corsica in order to see my family which is living there. But I will have to wait for 2030 for line 18 to be ready.

    I love taking the metro in Paris to go to work. Lived in Los Angeles, Fargo,ND, Dallas,TX and now Orlando, FL I had to drive all the time and I hate that. I meet old class mate or friends in the subway in Paris where I am from. My social life is not the same lol

But they were influenced by American usage of 'billion' (short scale) . (Snob Brits complain about 'pollution' of their languague by overseas (US) English, and here they might have a point.😉 Just like with Fahrenheit ). The situation is now that Arab and former Soviet countries use the (US) short scale, but with the term 'milliard' for 10⁹ ..🤔 English speaking countries and Brazil use the Short Scale with 'bilion' .. East Asian countries use a complete different system ... Confusing.     There's another creative side of the project and it deals with money. The main issue on these huge public projects is that they're usually victims of budget cuts , political moves and therefore, subject to delays of all sorts. But the man who was in charge of the project at the very beginning, Christian Blanc, had this brilliant idea: copy-paste Baron Haussmann's method for funding Paris metro at the begining of 20th century. That is using very long term bonds. Paris metro's debt was completed in 1970 ! The Grand Paris Express funding relies on a batch of taxes which have been collected during the first years only in the Ile-de-France region (meaning by the future users) and still are. On this basis, the Société du Grand Paris regularly issues long term bonds, which investors seem to be very fond of ! So clever...

    I live in the South Eastern suburban area of Paris between 2 new stations on the new line 15. It will save me a lot of time. Right now with the trains I can only go to Paris in the North-West direction, with the new line 15 I will also be allowed to go East and West and circle around Paris and connect with other lines, I'll save a lot of time to reach the airports, business centers, or even Disneyland. The project is needed by the population, it's a very good investment, and it's only a new beginning because more stations and more lines, at an even cheaper cost of construction, will appear over time in this 21th century. The metro web of the region won't stop growing anytime soon, that's a certainty.

    Added to all of these are also a comprehensive number of new Tramway lines, and a few RER/Transilien extensions. All this project is a godsent is if works as intended , as the few lines crossing Paris West/East like RERA are at near 170% capacity. Traveling on both sides without getting through the center, it's the dream of a huge part of the Ile de France population.

    As a "petite couronne" inhabitant, This project, whatever hiccup it encounters, is overly needed. I cannot wait for the first extensions to be opened south and East. To give you an Idea, My work commute time is around 1Hour because I need to take RER A west to "Gare de Lyon", the line 14 back to Bercy and bus lines to Ivry-Sur-Seine. When I go by Bike, I have a direct route of about 40 minutes with mostly isolated bike paths

    I'm in Montreuil, a near Paris suburb, and I work in Paris. I'm waiting impatiently for the line 11 extension, which is already late due to Covid, and got once again delayed from fall 2023 to spring 2024. That's more than 18 months late compared to the plan when I moved here. I have to travel by bus to Montreuil downtown and take the metro (line 9) there, which is very inconvenient. When the line 11 finally opens, I will save at least 30 mintues on each trip, so one hour a day, not speaking about the difference in travel comfort. I can't wait, seriously... The Grand Paris metro is not the only public transport infracture currently in development in Paris. The RER E line is also extended to the west, to La Defense and Nanterre, and multiple new tramway lines and extensions of existing lines are in the works. Paris organizing the summer olympic games in 2024 was used as an argument to make the Grad Paris "profitable", so to say, as in "we need it anyway, but at least, it will be immediatly useful for the olympics". In the end, only the extensions of line 11 and 14 will be ready in time. Official reason is Covid. Of course...

    Everybody in Paris using Public transport knows... There's stuff we just can't wait like new trains on the RER B & D... As for the project, if you're are regular user of Pars Transport you know it's mandatory and already late... It should have been done 20 years ago. the only line that is a bit future proof is the line 18... All the other ones will be saturated from day one.

    @@tenalafel Alas yes ... the project resulting from the merger of RATP and municipal projects has been taken over by the government technocrats, who have modified it, those who have other priorities and little spirit of efficiency. For example: a station, a specific architecture, or how to create a need for stock of unique (and expensive) parts for each station..... The M16 and 17 will be at 3 cars (54m) too short!! while they cross deserts question heavy public transport, and in addition it will have to lighten the RER B (200m trains) which is on the verge of explosion with its almost million daily travelers.... The M15 has 6 cars...too few, and no right-of-way reserves are planned. And many other things.

    I work beside the future line 18. It looks to be at an advanced stage (tunnels finished, stations being built), but the first section (Massy to Saclay) is not set to be opened until late 2026 and the next stage (Massy to Orly Airport) until late 2027. I'd love to know what work is required for the next 3 to 4 years.

    6:24 - The arrow of the "Saint-Maur Créteil (SMC)" station does not point to this station, it points to the "Nogent le Perreux" station. The real location of SMC is just to the left of the "Champigny Centre" station (on the pale pink part of line 15, between the Marne river and... the Marne river). When this SMC station will open, it will change my life to go to work :)

    French Parisian metro is much older than Madrid one ´s. Also this is not the same, Madrid metro is built by French company with Spanish one, but the new Parisian is the 2.0 version

    I can give first hand account of the absurdity of this "star/étoile" configuration forcing us to go to Paris I live in Évry in the south of Paris in the Essonne department. If I want to go to Massy, also in the Essonne department and just 18km from Evry, I need to walk 15 minutes to the RER D station, take a train that in peak hours comes every 10 minutes, travel 35 minutes to central Paris to Châtelet Les Halles station, change platform to take the RER B, wait at the most 15 minutes for it, travel 30 minutes back to the south to Massy-Palaiseau station The Grand Paris Express doesn't go down as south as Évry but as part of an even greater plan, tramways are being built so in early december 2023, a reliable tramway fifteen minutes from where I live will take me to Massy-Palaiseau station in 25 minutes without having to go through Paris Thankfully I live and work in Évry and just walk to work 🙄 Edit : T12 is operational but distance is covered in 42 minutes not the promised 25. Still a great improvement though, especially to get to Longjumeau etc.

    Aren't there buses that go from Evry to Massy ? Especially as these are 2 pretty important cities in Essone. Evry is the capital of Essonne, Massy has a TGV and RER hub etc... I once found a direct bus from Orly to Massy (91-10, a bus of the department). It would be surprising if they didn't exist from Evry to Massy.

    The Elizabeth line (117 km of rails) passes through central London. Paris already has 5 lines like this RER A 109km RER B 80km RER C 187km RER D 197km RER E 56 km The Grand Paris express (200km of rails) is different. It aims to connect suburbs together without ever passing through the center.

    Commuting in central Paris to go from North to South is not that bad. The pain is having to go to Paris' center to join a South suburb from a South-East suburb...

    Orly needs a subway connection, Taking the tram 7 to the Metro 7 was and is ridiculous as Orly was the the main airport in Paris and is the domestic (EU) airport in Paris now as Charles de Gaulle is now the main international airport. Extending line 7 to Orly would make more sense to me than extending 14, but I'm sure there must be a reason for that decision.

    Line 14 is the most recent one, fully automatic. Plus the 7 is already split into two directions southwards: Ivry and Villejuif. It would have limited the capacity to bring people to the airport.

    @@xMarko7 I would rather see the Maison -Mairie branch become a shuttle service with a transfer and extend the 7 line to Orly, It would safe 10's of millions of euros in tunneling, the 14 should continue west to east to help connect communities radially

    @@MannySilva I see but it would make no sense since like you've mentionned above, they've built a Tram line 7 that starts at Villejuif and goes south to the airport. It's already a kind of extention of the metro7 to Orly but a cheaper version. Almost as if they didnt want to invest such money in a costly metro extention back then. So, as of today, i think extending the metro7 would making the tram7 useless and built "for nothing". When it comes to line 14, it makes sense for me. It will now be the spinal cord of the network, just like our line4 was decades ago for North-South travel through Paris before RER was installed. The fact the 14 is the newest one, automatic and thus surely the most efficient (I guess) made this choice the obvious and rational one I suppose.

    Interesting comment but one small mistake. Going in the opposite direction (e.g. East to West or North to South) is not the issue, it’s fast and direct. The issue is all the other lateral moves, e.g. when you need to go West to North, or East to South.

    The only problem with this problem, as a Parisian, is the fact that several lines will illegally take over natural lands and urban farms initially protected by the law. But by using a special loophole of the laws, the national government can sue every person that opposes itself to the projects. Don't get me wrong : most of the people are well financially compensated and listened in the negociations. However, when it came to the natural lands, the project didn't expect to add a couple of € millions on the table to impact the least local farmers and biodiversity : this is why they used this law to bypass the other ones.

    ​@@BruneSixtine a big part of this system is underground indeed, especially in the center of Paris. However, to reduce their expenses, the Grand Paris Express company is constructing on the ground level in the peri-urban areas.

    @@DragonDinos70 Malheureusement (ou heureusement parfois), la loi "générale" est souvent facile à contourner par des lois "d'exception" utilisées à l'excès, comme dans ce cas, où même quand des terres sont classées ou protégées par des chartes strictes (relevant de la loi "générale"), le changement de statut du projet (Projet d'Intérêt National) fait perdre toute défense de la terre auparavant protégée. Je crois qu'il est bon de sacrifier parfois un zone classée au profit d'un intérêt national crucial. Mais en l'occurence, des solutions alternatives existaient et n'ont pas été considérées par soucis de coûts. C'est en cela que je regrette que l'abus d'usage d'une loi d'exception amène à déconsidérer la loi initiale supposée primer.

    The original network, in Paris intramuros is quite old, durty, with low frequence of train. In particulary line 13, nowed as the "worst line in Paris. Also, in the touristic period it is a real nightmar to travel in metro. But for all the suburb citizen, it will be a real relieve, the will be not forced to go in paris but travel around it. Excuse me for my bad english, vocabulary and grammar, but i think my point of vu can give you a more precise image of the reality in my city.
