You can ask most people who grew up in the 70"s to name a vice president from that era, an Olympic gold medalist, an Oscar winner or even their home room teacher in high school and few could give you an answer. Ask the same person who the dancer was on the Gong Show and nearly everyone will tell you GENE GENE THE DANCING MACHINE! Without saying a single word he always brought instant joy and laughter.

Interesting questions. I recall Gerald Ford. Don't recall who Carter's VP was. Bruce Jenner and Nadia Comaneci were the most famous Olympians - easily. Al Pacino, I think, won an Oscar. And don't recall a single homeroom teacher. Buy you're right here: Gene was d' bomb.

I absolutely LOVED watching The Gong Show back in the 70s! While I watched him him dance, show after show, and get every prop in the studio chucked at him each time, I never saw him get clocked as bad as he did at 1:21. LMAO RIP Gene....God loves a good dancer, and heaven surely got one last week!

I was a volunteer Firefighter and EMT in the town I grew up in, We used to have a Street Fair every year, the 3rd weekend of August where the main street was blocked off. We had to park the the Firetrucks in a small field just off the main street so we could get out if a call came in. Some of us slept on the trucks throughout the weekend. .We went on 3 calls that Saterday evening. Pretty exausted but when we got back around 1:30 a.m., half way through a cooler of beer (there were 4 of us) I boughta micro casette recorder that was new and had recorded "Gene, Gene the dance machine" earlier in the week to test it. I bought it out played it. There we were at 3:a.m., 4 Firefighters half drunk doing the Gene dancing machine out in a field.🤣🤣🤣🤣

I can absolutely see that happening! Much better times back then, calmer, people were so much more cooler, and for all the censorship BS, comedy FOUND a way around that with something completely gone today…. CREATIVE WRITING! It allowed problem to laugh more, but you also had to be able to think to get the “hidden” innuendo, to get the JOKE! Gene Gene wasn’t hidden, but went on around him was all creatives getting the comedy through the censors. Oh the SHOCK when Jaye P Morgan flashed her rack… I bet there were some old farts in TV studio executive offices, and ad execs in private companies that all had little heart attacks that night. Crazy, if they had left it alone, or embraced it… they all would have soared to greater success. Love your story, it would have been cool for that to have been recorded… some good old, clean “American fireman drinkin beer while dancing” after saving lives, FUN!! The only think missing in that story that WOULD definitely make it more realistic to the times, would be another Gong Show “classic”…. all kinds of free flowing coke to really get the party going! Lol. 😂🤠👍🏼☮️

I imagine that in every dressing room, “Green Room”, broom closet, at every reception desk, coat check, ticket booth, there MUST have been candy bowls filled with coke and a bundle of straws beside them. Before taping, during breaks in taping, before coming back on for taping, for the wrap after taping, it just must have been one wild non-stop disco themed and coke infused, party! This show was a classic and should have lived longer. Years later my favorite part of it is rewatching episodes and wondering just how I could have (or how ANYONE could have) missed noticing just how BLASTED Chuck was all the time, and how that was tripled by the end of the show!! 😜😅🤪👍🏼☮️

Gene Gene was a good sport. On one occasion a huge painted foam rubber boulder was bounced straight off the top of his head from the side line! He flinched allright, but then just kept right on dancin'!

    * New version on ABC prime time Thursday nights is okay but they need to bring Jaye, Arte and Jamie back as judges. That English guy hosting it tries hard but he is no Chuckie Baby! May not be as good as original but still better than most of today's prime time stuff. ☺

It was an unusual time and you could never explain it to anyone who wasn't part of that period. People really liked to party and it was a time when people were friendly. They were trying to break out of the uptight era of the previous generation. It was a time of happy rebellion.

I also seen a post that showed Caroll Burnett showing her boobs to one of the actors on the show. Can't remember if it was Tim, Harvey or another. Which, as a teenager, with also two fried eggs liberated me to get them out on a regular basis, as long as the music was right!!! This is what we want!!!
