I was a teenager in those times and they were more freewheeling than today and then Ronald Reagan came along and ruined it all the party was over then.
If there ever was a "Just Sit Back, Turn-Off Your Brain For a Few Minutes and Enjoy" kinda daytime show, it's this one .... 🙂👍🏻♥️
This is when tv was great.

He was such a funny guy 👦 🤣 when I was there with my old boyfriend who was on the show and I was in the audience watching 👀 him 🤣
Number 0ne funniest show of all time. It spawned so many other shows
We used to watch this show all the time.. just crazy local TV hysterics.. one time there was this old lady tap dancing, singing and playing the tuba.. I can still hear my mom bust out laughing. Actually think that one is on KZread. There was this other guy whose entire act was just blowing up his face on a piece of acrylic glass he brought out. That was a quick tutorial for my own (copy-cat) blowfish antics over the decades that followed.. The best of times.. rippling through the years to present day. Awesome show!

There are often comments on these "Gong Show" videos speculating about Chuck Barris being on drugs when he hosted the program. He wasn't. As anyone who worked for him in the sixties and seventies can attest, Barris was anti-drugs and forbid them in his production company, which also churned out "The Dating Game," "The Newlywed Game," and other shows. He threatened to fire employees who did use drugs. As Barris himself once said, he could not have run a successful, publicly-traded company had he been an addict.
One of the best shows in TV history.

This show is still the best thing on.
Man, I love how it's so rough around the edges... delightfully unprofessional. Reminds me of the heyday of MAD magazine, so self-depricating.
One of about 6 or 7 of the only good things about the 70's was... The Gong Show.

The Gong Show in my opinion is infinitely superior to America's Got Talent because the Gong Show is just people having fun. It didn't matter who won. No money is involved. AGT is way too serious and over-produced and the money gives it unnecessary tension.
It's funny to know that this fun stuff came on daily!!!!

I loved this show! Anyone remember the Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara act? It consisted of Scarlett exclaiming in her southern drawl, “why you can’t say that Rhett!” - and that was about it, just that. They were in full costume. Hilarious and weird and I loved it!

Did you watch it when they brought it back in 2017? There's nobody who can truly replace Chuck, but I thought British import Tommy Maitland did a great job as the new host - it's a shame he disappeared off the face of the earth afterwards...

Murray Langston nearly tipped the bit when he removed his unknown comic bag. I recognized his voice the first time he ever appeared on The Gong Show from the Sonny and Cher show
Chuck Barris was awesome
Good lawd. Those were the days. Oh how I wish.
Guy did good impressions. Did some that all comedians skip. So good to hear for a change. Saw comedian from New York, didn't use any foul language and after all acts were done he came out and talked to us for an hour. I offered him a few jokes I made, and he laughed, and said ,"No thanks".
The winner, Eddie Fame, was phenomenal with his impressions. This guy should have had a job in Hollywood, or at least a stand up gig in Vegas.
I heard the elevator in the casting building for the gong show was always interesting with all kinds of odd characters!

Chuck Barris should get the Nobel Piece Prize!!
"Your Feet's Too Big" is a Fats Waller tune right out of Stormy Weather. Sung about Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. You know what they say about a man with big feet? He's two feet long!
The gong show mostly had terrible acts but the one-flying purple people eater that played multiple horns at the same time under the costume was my dear father figure -musician -Jim Richardson he took me to a tower record store once and showed me what the good jazz was I still remember clapping in front of the tv for him at six years old it’s a small world ❤️😘🥰
