I HATED my 60° for so long and dreaded what was to come most times I pulled it out to attempt a shot with it. I decided to change all that and see if it were possible for us to become friends. Spending some alone time together has proven to really been beneficial to both of our existence. Hitting a few hundred balls with it and letting it know I was sorry for neglecting it for so long has led to us becoming fairly decent friends now. It even blessed me with one of the more memorable moments in my few decades of Golfing. Three consecutive balls hit about the exact same distance of 90yards and within a 10 feet of spread. I haven't been able to come close to replicating that but having done it that one time gives me a peek into what I'm capable of. Now I can only hope my 60 will be able to convince the rest of my clubs that if they simply cooperate then they won't be cursed at, thrown, and threatened to be turned in for scrap metal so often.

@@ForteanResearcher Thanks Sir. My dark thoughts are generally balanced out by my sometimes light humor. I'll forever be working on eliminating those negative thoughts but sometimes they just shoot to the surface too quickly. Golf has a way of effortlessly conjuring them up at times. 😄

@@ForteanResearcher I hear ya, I'm old school myself. I found the key to the 60 was to embrace the bounce on the sole of the club as it's intentionally engineered to be there. Since the shaft of these higher lofted clubs tends to be shorter, I found that having a more circular swing arc, as opposed to a more decending (vertical) swing arc like the less lofted clubs, really helped guide the clubface into the proper path. I started with very short chips. So short you could do it inside your home or yard, kind of like a putting stroke. Then I graduated to progressively longer distances until I felt confident taking full swings while making solid contact. I still thin or chunk some shots but they are becoming more and more rare. Even the pros do it occasionally too, right?😁

Im sure your problem is that you don't commit to it. Most people who can't use lob wedges it's because they are afraid of taking that much of a swing that close to the green. Trust the loft and keep the speed up.

You can turn a 5 iron into a lob wedge if you know what you're doing. Driver, 7 iron, putter. Those are the only three you need. I know players that can destroy with only a 5 iron.
I love my 58, use it anywhere from 100 down to around 25 yards. I don't chip with it though. I find the 54 is a lot easier to get close at least for me.
You are right. Who needs driver when I've got a 60 in the bag. I've hit some of longest greenside drives with one.
I have a 60, 54, and a 50 (getting a new 58 soon) but I honestly only really use the 54. I can add loft and get it to stop pretty quickly or deloft it and play a nice bump and run, my 60 is either a super spinny shot that rolls off the green or a 120 yard bullet over it, no in between whatsoever.
It depends on the course. You can loft a 56 all you need on soft conditions

Thoroughly agree with a Lob Wedge. I just put one in the bag a week ago and I fine tuned it to a tip trimmed to length variant in an X-Flex shaft. My dispersion was so minimal to the point I was leaving shots less than a yard from the pin. Looks like 2023 has big things awaiting like breaking 75 on my end lol And in 18 holes as well (couldn't break 80 for a full round this year but it's looking good).
I think a lot of confusion for amateurs (me included) comes in when they mistake the situations the LW is good for. Trying to hit a LW with zero trouble in front of you is where I think most people go wrong
Couldn’t agree more. Beginner golfer, got a beginner set which includes everything but the wedges. Played a round and was bemoaning not having something with a higher loft than 47 degrees. A 60 would have been used on half the holes if it was in the bag
There are so many high handicap golfers that cant hit a sand wedge consistently much less a lob wedge. We need more content for the average golf hack. Rick and other scratch golfers/ pga pros are just hard to relate to…

60 is my favorite club in the bag. Use it for anything from 100 yards and in. I'll toot my own horn, I'm damn good with it. If there's a club you are comfortable with then thats the club you'll use most often.
I feel most clubs are equally important but the clubs that are most underutilized for average players like me are fairway woods. I’ve saved myself a lot of trouble off the tee with them since I learned that par 4/5 doesn’t automatically mean driver.
I agree. You need a 58 or 60 for those short-sided chips onto the green. Might be able to get away with a 56 too. I can’t get enough height from my gap wedge for the ball to stop fast enough.
I’m a 20 handicapper and if you’re trying to lower your scores, lob wedges are great where Shield said but 52 & 54 are the chipping clubs that brought me into the 90s consistently. Bump and run play with 52° single handedly shaved 10 strokes off my card. If you’ve got more than 20 feet to the pin from the fringe or second cut, 52° will be so much more reliable in getting close.

Love my 60 use it all the time
Between watching Dan Grieve and getting regular lessons from a pro I realised my lob wedge was just taking up space in my bag. Highest lofted club I have now is 54 and can hit any shot I need around the green
I used to have a 64 before I lost it:( It served as the ultimate loft wedge while I used a 56 as an all round wedge within 110 yards. I have a more conventional set, but I do miss that 64
I couldn't agree more. I've always said that it's the one club in my bag that I can't live without.
My dad's highest lofted club is a 56. He can't stand 60s. He has 2 different 56s. One is very low bounce with a grind that he can open all the way up and not have the leading edge come up. Then he has a 56 with a high bounce for bunkers and full swings. He is brilliant with them. He is better than most people who use 60s with his 56.
It’s funny a 60 Lob Wedge completely transformed my game as a 14 Handicap. For approach shots within 100 years I don’t even think about using my 56 anymore. 90% of PGA Tour Players who use only three Wedges use a LW and only 30% use a SW. LW are so much better out o the sand as well. Honestly think using a LW dropped 2 Strokes to my Handicap. So underrated I honestly only use my SW for Greenside Chipping.
Think people rely on the lob wedge way to much, to the detriment of their game, using it means you pretty much have to be spot on with the flight, Rick often uses his when he should be using a bump and run type shots,
Only have a 52° and 56° currently. Any time I need more loft, I just open the face and widen my stance 👌🏽 The 52° is actually my go-to for bunker shots around the greens.

That's where the problem lies, u lose accuracy and consistency from having to open the clubface.
I used to play a 60 degree wedge and dont mind this opinion, however once you get to a certain skill level, and have the shots you need with wedges (flops, flighted shots, runners, spinners, etc) then you really only “need” a 56 degree. I have found that i hit my 56 degree aprox 105 yards, but when i start hitting 50,60,70 yard shots for example, i find it is way easier to control and is a much lower flight, with enough spin to do what i need it to do on the green. And if you open up the face with a 56, you can still hit your flop shot (that doesn’t need used as much as most high handicap players think.) I like the take though
I got a 60° an in Stanley feel in love. I’m awful at golf shooting normally low 90 but still enjoy it but I feel so confident with a 60 in my hand
My opinion is a 7 iron just thin consistently when ur a 30 currently of 18 it’s a must need

I’d say a 7 iron, it’s literally my favorite go to
I use to have a 60 deg but I would hit the worst shot of the round with it guaranteed. So I took it out and replaced it with a 7 wood to fill a gapping issue at the top of the bag.
I took out my lob wedge. As a 40-45 handicap, I have no business with those "hero" type of shots. I have enough skill with my high toe 56° and can open it up a bit if needed, but I have little faith in a 58 or higher in my bag on the course. Great on the range and I love the 68° and 72° there, but I never use them on the course.
Driving iron to swap from 5 wood- hybrid etc combo. Swap my Wood out in the summer for the height diffrence and stopping power
A 7 iron. I've played entire rounds from the standard mens tees and shot my typical score on several occasions. A lob wedge is useful, but remember Seve and his 3 iron. You can do everything with a 7.

Sometimes I chip with a 7
My 60 is literally my go to wedge, anything inside of 100 yards 70% of the time is my lob and anything green side is 95% my lob. Depending on how open your face is and your swing speeds you can get a lot of different results out of that one club
I grew up without a 60 and consider it pretty useless. If you know how to hit a 56 with an open face, which is much easier than it sounds, than you always have a lob shot around the green and out of bunkers. The only time I sometimes wish I had a 60 is from around 50-60 yards, but I still prefer having an extra hybrid in the bag instead.
A hybrid 24 or 27 degree they are so versatile my thought has always been hit 10 balls with hybrid and say a 5 or 6 iron whichever one you hit better I'd say the hybrid will win my opinion
5 handicap and never had a lob wedge in the bag. Not a long hitter so I carry a 3w and 5w.
Before you open the face of a lob wedge and take a full swing next to the green, make sure you can hit a basic chip.
You don't need a putter, can just blade a wedge or use a driver

Anyone who says SW are a fine replacement hasn’t tried a LW out of a bunker, it’s just a different game. LW make sand so much easier.
The worst thing is to give some one beginning golf is lob wedge. Give then 52, 54, or 56 wedge and learn how hit high shots, low shots by manoeuvrings the wedge.
Id disagree with this one solely because a 56 can pretty much do anything a 60 can do and more. Personally id say a long-mid iron like a 4 or 5. Perfect for 175-200 yard shots, can use it when your struggling of the tee with the big clubs and is very useful for punch shots if you have tree trouble or just need to get back in play.
When I play it well, I love my Lob Wedge. The main problem I have is under powering my shots and only hitting the ball about 5 yards, but I'm starting to get the hang of it and really hit some clutch shots with it last weekend. Need to get some more practice in with it.... also need to buy a new one vs a heavily used one, lol.
I use exclusively my 60 for everything under 50 yards XD i had no 50-56 for a while and had to use the 60 only, now im pretty damn good with it
Putter, p wedge, sand wedge, 7 iron, 4 hybrid, 3 wood, and driver.
I don't use it often, maybe once a round, sometimes twice, and that's my 64 degree wedge. Usually, I use my sandwedge

Brand new to the game should avoid above 56*; lob wedges will drain confidence right out of you when you hit it thin and it skitters way across the green
56 is the highest angle I have and it's the club I hit the worst. As the angle increases the margin for error goes down so much. At 60 there's like half an inch between topping it and going so far under it that it barely moves the ball at all.
I don't use my lob wedge much..but in tight situations I have it
My 60 is the only club I’ve grown an attachment to. We now have 3 kids and live comfortably in our home in New Jersey.
Titleist Vokey, 56°. My standard swing to use the loft only gets about 80 yards, but 75 and in is a blast
I agree. i love my 64 degree wedge, now it seems most companies arent even selling them anymore
I've seem more shots lost with a lob wedge than any other club. Most amateur golfers shouldn't carry anything more than a 56*. Lee Trevino and Seve only had 56 wedges and they were wizards. I can open up my C grind 56* to at least 65*.
The most important part is you don't have to use it all the time if there's room to bump and run by all means do it

Because I do not hit the ball far I got rid of my 2-7 irons. I use my 3 wood or two hybrids for those distances. Driver, 3W, 3 & 4 Hybrid, 8 & 9 iron, PW, LW, SW, Putter. That's my bag. Lighter and less options means less guessing.

Not sure I agree. A 30 handicap golfer doesn’t understand you need to compress the ball, they’d be skulling it all over the place. They’re always trying to lift the ball because they don’t understand the loft does that. I’d say either a high lofted driver or 3 wood. In saying that I use my lob wedge for short bunker shots, but I play off +1 and it took years to be confident playing flop shots etc and I still skull a few

I know my putter is the most used. averaging at least three uses per hole. my driver is used on every hole longer than a par 3. but usually no more than once per hole. I think my 4 iron is probably my least used club. a quick look shows it is the cleanest in my bag. for the average golfer, I'd say either fairway woods or long irons would be the least used, because they would tend to favor one over the other.
