    The roads are all torn up in the Bay Area as well. And years back some State Parks like Big Basin stated they were going to have to close due to lack of funds. Turns out they actually had plenty of money, some people just "diverted" the funds to "other things". Funny thing there, the money always getting "diverted" away somewhere...

The kids would hang out in this abandoned lot beside the plant, and he needed to scare them off before someone found him out. So he cut holes in 2 reflectors to put over his eyes, and threw a shower curtain over his back and would scare the kids away. And so the Mothman was born.

    All of the suspender cables were replaced in the 1970s. I saw it done. To accomplish this job, a movable scaffold was installed that hung from both main cables, with a bridging section between them. This scaffold was used to attach temporary suspender cables to take the load while the original suspender cables were being removed and replaced. Why wasn't the main cables painted at this time?

    Everything has a limited life span and almost every bridge out there will need to be replaced at some point, this bridge's towers are made up of lots and lots of steel angles and plates riveted to them, the inside cavities are sealed up with no access inside them and maybe only primer from 1930 on it, at some point moisture inside would start corrosion from the INSIDE out and by the time anything is visible outside it's too late, like a car body that rusts from the inside of the doors etc out.

However, I'm wondering what in hell have the directors of the bridge district been doing with all the $$$ they've been collecting from tolls and other fees. It's going to be very embarrassing if the bridge has not been maintained to an acceptable standard and it is allowed to deteriorate beyond repair.

    Approximately one billion seven hundred thousand dollars is collected in tolls every year. That is enough to work year round on any part of the bridge they please. Plus there is probably money coming in from Cal Trans. So where is all of this money going? Most likely in the pockets of the fat cats. Your Toll Fees At Work folks. This is a criminal rip off. Someone needs to go to prison.

    Unfortunately here in SoCal is the same..they’ve held “meetings” to talk about the building of fasttrak lanes on multiple stretches of major interstates. Many opposed to converting the already existing carpool lanes into fasttrak because there are obvious cause for concern, but ultimately they were built anyways. Caltrans’ initial excuse was that they wanted to “experiment” and test its effects on traffic, and as time passed, fasttrak lanes were never removed as now it became obvious they were for nothing but profit. As for road projects, we’ve also had a section of a freeway that was supposed to be repaired and renovated by 2018 according to the construction sign, but its already August and no sign of work or any construction can be seen. That section of road now has weed and wild grass growing between the cracks and potholes. “Our tax money at work” is what the sign says..

    With these huge steel bridges, the typical procedure is to start prepping and painting at one end and after the crews reach the other end, they start the process anew. I wonder if they are using epoxy paint or UV resistant paint. This bridge's main problem is that it is in California where infrastructure is neglected.

    Sheer neglect. Halifax, Nova Scotia has two suspension bridges over the harbor. Not as grand as the Golden Gate, but pretty big. The bridges are in a constant state of maintenance, and the older one, built in the 50s, recently had a major refurbishment and upgrade. All paid for by fairly modest tolls. I think it was CAD$1.25 for a car the last time I was there.

    As an Architect,… They should make a New Bridge, use the Old Bridge as a Temporary Bridge while making a new one, after finishing the New Bridge make another New Bridge on the Temporary Bridge So basically there are 2 sets of New Bridge one goes the Right Lane the other goes to Left Lane It’ll cost most likely between $10B-$20B, but it’s much better than maintaining the rust every 5 years and not knowing it may collapse due to old age

    They spent billions of dollars since 2001 to retrofit the bridge with seismic devices. It was a four part plan. Phase 1 was in 1997-2001 which strengthened and retrofitted stronger support towers, stronger foundations, and retrofitted isolator bearings on the truces in the north viaduct. New special cable dampers were also installed. Phase 2 happened between 2001-2008 where the south viaduct was retrofitted with the same devices as the north viaduct. Since the south side also has the Four-Point arch. New isolation bearings and bushings were installed on the arch. The concrete pylons was upgraded with a stronger foundation and steel tendons installed into the bed rock to limit seismic movement. Phase 3a was the last phase done in 2008-2014 which strengthened the north side anchorage with stronger foundations and isolation devices. The next phase 3a is scheduled for 2024-2029 and is the biggest and most costly phase at 880 million dollars. The government had issued a 400 million dollar grant which is half of what the project needs. The other 400 million is coming from tax payers, state funds and tolls. This next phase includes installing new truces on the bridge span with more seismic dissipation devices, such as isolator bearings and bushings. New tongue plates are being retrofitted across the span to allow for limited movement in large earthquakes. The towers are also included in this next phase. The tower bases are being strengthened and new steel plats installed. New steel supports are being installed into the tower structures. After the tower work is complete, they are both getting painted. Why paint the bridge and waste 100 million dollars if you have to tear it apart after a couple years to perform upgrades? It looks bad now, but there is a strategy with the bridge needs and repair costs. As of now, the bridge is rated for a 8.3 earthquake whereas before the bridge was in danger of collapsing in a 6-7 scale earthquake. Phase 4 has not been announced as surveys have yet not been completed. However, I believe phase 4 will be upgrading and retrofitting the cables and roadway deck. After phase 4, the bridge will be rated for a 9-10 scale earthquake.

    It would be to cost ineffective in the long run to have what would essentially be a large fleet to handle the volume of traffic that would still want to cross the bay (with cars and all that) plus if they went with a small fleet of say 10 ferries that can transport cars the backlog of traffic back up would be too much for it to handle. A bridge may cost a lot more initially but that can be recouped via toll fees over the lifespan of the bridge once it's completed as opposed to the upkeep of all the ferries each year...

    imagine just driving to see some family, then while you’re on this bridge the whole thing just falls and you experience a moment of free fall as you fly upward and slam your back against the top of your car and see all the pieces of the bridge and other cars falling into the water and then your car slams against the water and you see it all thrust upward around you as the windows crack, followed by it plunging into darkness as water fills up your car and you slowly lose consciousness and drown

    Gonna be honest, I remember watching a video documentary that's probably close to 10 years old that mentioned the infrastructure of the bridge was not in the best shape. People who drove across the bridge, often daily, felt like the bridge was about to collapse. I think this just adds to it that the bridge for how old it is needs some tender love and care, more then it's currently getting. If the bridge wasn't the main mode of transportation to get across, I think the city of San Fran would be in a much worse state. Nothing like boating across~

  • @loadedfun4764
    @loadedfun47642 жыл бұрын

    The way bridges get painted is once it’s finished being painted your supposed to start all over at the beginning blasting it with steel shot priming it and finishing it. So many mills of paint need to be applied. For all the paint that’s put on it all has to be removed once you start all over again. Bridges can’t withstand the weight of 100 coats of paint. The San Fran bridge in the fog and mist all the time. If it hasn’t been maintained you can bet it will come down some day.... just like anything else, ignore it and it will go away.

    It’s not the whole country...mainly just blue states like California, New York, New Jersey... Michigan has a bigger suspension bridge (longest between anchorages in the Western Hemisphere) that is 67 years old and has been continuously being painted since the day it was built. It takes 7 years to paint the Mackinac Bridge and as soon as they are done, they start over. They are currently planning the replacement of the bridge’s deck, all the cross beams and the 5 main stringers that run the length of the bridge. Bridge decks normally need replacing after 40 years, but because of the excellent maintenance, it has lasted over 60 years. Even now, it’s still in excellent shape, but they want to replace it anyway so they can then work on other areas. When asked how much longer we can expect the Mighty Mac to last, many engineers say with the current maintenance standards, at least 2 or 3 more centuries. This is how middle America operates. Crews and managers would be fired en mass and directors would be asked to resign if anything even as remotely iconic as the Golden Gate were allowed to get like that! But then again, they do have a different level of tolerance for decay and blight in California.

    Rusting/decaying infrastructure seems to be a problem right across the USA. In a recent trip (by train) across the USA (from San Francisco to Chicago), I was shocked by the poor condition of so many large bridges, both rail and road. You guys really need to do some serious infrastructure upgrades. Perhaps you could get the Chinese in to show you how to do it.
