While no people were on the bridge when the Tacoma Narrows bridge collapsed, there was a dog in the car that was sadly killed during the collapse. Several people tried to save him but he was growling and snapping at people because he was so scared that they couldn't get him out of the car.

Yeah I would’ve taken some pretty bad bites before I let any dog die in front of me. I’ll live. The dog won’t. It’s pretty simple. Plus there’s ways to catch a dog without getting bit. Animal control does it every day

The galloping gerty bridge footage never ceases to astound me. Never seen steel and concrete bend so much. Not just a few feet here and there but dozens of feet of bends and torque.

Born in Tacoma, I grew up watching that film. But I was more amazed during an earthquake after we moved to California. One morning I was reaching for a paint brush hanging on the wall in the garage and just as I touched it, it moved further away LoL. I believe it was the Wittier Quake which was a pretty good one. It was about 70 miles south of me. Anyway, I looked out the garage door into the street and watched the street and sidewalk rolling up and down. It caused 3 waves about 2-3 foot tall. The houses were going up and down, block walls, our mailbox was moving like the mailbox in "Close Encounters". The block walls got a few cracks in the mortar joints, but the pavement and sidewalks were un-marked.

@@andyfletcher3561 - I saw that during the SF earthquake, 1989. My wife and I were walking south on 19th Ave at Irving St. I heard a garage door near me start to rattle so I pulled her aside. But the garage door wasn't opening. I realized _everything_ was shaking. I took a firm hold on her with one arm and wrapped the other around a streetlight. And stood there, facing south on 19th Ave, watching the 6 lane street rippling in _large_ waves just like you've wave a flag around. The entire Outer Sunset area of San Francisco - and a lot more, like the Marina district - is build on sand, and subject to liquification during earthquakes.

I remember all of the sudden the building kind of shook and bounced, as if someone really large were jumping, but there was no foot fall and this bouncing increased with intensity and it came with a sound almost like a train that was coming closer . There was a long wooden table with bench seats and the teacher yelled, "earthquake! Under the desk!" I was already seated at the desk drawing a picture of a Jack o lantern as it was getting closer to halloween, so I just slipped down under the desk as the bouncing increased its intensity and the train sound louder and then both the vibrating and sound decreased as it passed by like a dappled effect. In the classroom we had one of those really old tvs with the two knows and it always took about oma full minute for the picture to come in. The teacher went tight to the TV to turn it on it was showing an aerial view of the bay Bridge from a helicopter. Then it was showing all of the devastation, the fires everywhere I remember then after that seeing all of the buildings that were destroyed, the marina district abd the tent city, all of the people not being allowed to go home,, people whose homes fell into cracks in the ground, the cypress freeway collapse and the civilians trying to get in to save people, the people digging through bricks and concrete trying to find people... It was so scary as a child to see all that, and then to be told, yeah, it can qnd will happen again, and we would never know when it will , and each aftershock struck fear further. In 1991 my mom got a job in Las Vegas. I remember asking my mom the only thing I really wanted to know, "do they have earthquakes in Las vegas?" "No they don't have earthquakes in Las vegas." And I was ready to go! I hate Las Vegas with a passion and miss California still. But that earthquake was so traumatizing as a child. Even being in Clayton where we didn't have any damage to speak of save some cracks in the pavement, seeing the absolute devastation all over the bay area, the sadness it caused, I was in a constant state of fear until we got to Las Vegas. I will never forget it. But I still love the bay area.

I think you need to add the catastrophic ending of the Morandi bridge near Genoa, here in Italy. Lack of maintenance and utterly criminal behaviours of some "authorities" had resulted in a death toll of 47 people..

What is it with the Italians? They produced so much beauty, mostly as individuals in paintings and buildings, but when it comes to government structures in the there was no need for all those people to lose their lives. Their infrastructure seems decades behind the modern world. note: I lived in Italy as a child and went to school there. The weather is great in so much of the country, which is nice.

@@Happybidr i think is due to historical reasons: after the Roman empire, Italy's territory was divided between several reigns, counties, dynasties, until late 19th century. And the unification of the country was imposed in several southern regions. The first decades of the unification have been only a trouble for several parts of the population and so we never developed a strong sense of community as a whole..

The reason was it was a Baily bridge from the WWII years it use to have a suspension bridge the same as the current one over the Fox River further south.

If it were in the USA;It would take 3 years study,and several bids for over priced blueprints,and at least 1 'committee' deciding what to do about taking bids,and then eventually getting the cheapest contractor,who'd take months to arrange the equipment,and delays while waiting for supplies as they were 'estimated'by costs at the time the bid was made,and then they double the prices,and delay delivery,so the workers go to other work,and yet another delay happens while they get new crews.So I'm guesstimating it would take 7 years and 5 times the bid and be half-assed at best due to untrained workers,possible low quality supplies,and then there's the 'inspectors'...Oh wait,...that was just an estimate.It's still in "the planning stages".(You do know "The Mackinaw Bridge" took about 20 years...)

That bridge collapse in New Zealand cut the only highway on that side of the country. To get around it was a 2 day drive through difficult mountain passes and would take 3 or more tanks of fuel.

Minor correction: As a meteorologist and expat living in Thailand, I can tell you that you’ve got the monsoon season completely backwards. You mention it as October through March… that’s the dry season. The rainy season varies depending on where in Thailand you are (it can start anywhere from April to June), but generally it’s considered to be June through September… although April and May are marginal; indeed the Songkran holiday is celebrated with water as it marks the end of the dry season (it occurs in mid-April).

I don’t want any otherwise-unaware viewers thinking the monsoon season here was Oct-Mar. Indeed, it’s precisely the opposite. And, look, it’s the tropics. Floods CAN happen at any time. A couple years ago we had floods in the north in January. So, again, not a big deal. I’m just really picky about such stuff. And the reality is: rainy season here is June-September (generally… it can vary by a month depending on location).

Now living in Thailand (Prachin Buri province), about a 2 hour drive east of Bangkok, this area has 3 seasons x 4 months. Nov-Feb = cloudy & [not as] hot, Mar-Jun = sunny & hot, Jul-Oct = wet & humid. But this video mentioned northern Thailand where the weather is more extreme. Thankfully a bit more stable where I am.

Where are you guys getting your information? "The Nanfang'ao bridge in eastern Taiwan suffered a catastrophic collapse on October 1, 2019, killing six and wounding a dozen others. The bridge suddenly fell apart when an oil tanker was crossing over the structure" the bridge had a height of 59ft... not 500ft.

The New Zealand bridge appears to be a “Bailey Bridge”. These were developed before WW2. The purpose was to create smaller parts that would fit on a Liberty ship that when assembled could form a bridge of indeterminate length. Today these parts are scattered all around the world. They are very much in use today. Washington state has an inventory of Bailey Bridge parts to use in the event of a damaged permanent bridge. They were never intended to make a permanent bridge.

Station lane, walton-on-trent, England. There is a bailey bridge around the corner from my mums. Believe it was installed in the 1970s after the original bridge was washer away. Still in use today. Horrible driving over it when the river is high.

There are many Bailey bridge sections still available for the rapid replacement of failed bridges in New Zealand... note that the replacement was of the same construction.... this was rebuilt because it was a quick way to reinstitutue a bridge... giving another 30+ years for the politicians to decide on the design of a "more permanent" structure... Yeah, right....

@@JohnSmith-yv6eq After WW2, the New Zealand government did some canny purchases of war surplus. It bought LOTS of Bailey bridges, and used them extensively. Many are still in use.

You need to correct your statement about the falling 500 feet, I worked on the cleanup process. It fell 62 feet

22 years in Thailand I was amazed that "monsoon season" had moved. It used to be July till October. October till January we call not so dam hot season. hehe. You forgot the Silver bridge disaster that my family crossed regularly till it fell. We are currently under flood warnings here in Bangkok.

We are in monsoon season here in Utah. Sinkholes opened up roads so cars fell in the holes. We are getting strong storms every evening. Thunder and lightning and everything

Whenever bridge failures are reported, its the footage of the Tacoma Narrows bridge that is often shown, Seeing the bridge twist back and forth like a living creature writhing in agony is a sight that tends to stick in the mind, even now!

My mom grew up in northern Thailand, and told me all about how flood-prone the area is. When she lived there, from the mid 1950s to the mid 1970s, many of the homes were built on stilts to keep them from flooding during the monsoon season. Many of the people also owned small boats for transportation during that time of year.

My mom grew up in Indonesia and it was the same there with the stilts.

I crossed the bridge in New Zealand, its the only place where you can cross that river by car. The state highway 6 crosses lots of rivers, and most are single lane and sometimes quite long so that you must watch forward well ahead to see oncoming traffic already on the other end of the bridge. One of the bridges between Greymouth and Hokitika even had railway tracks in the middle of that single lane, but this bridge has been replaced with a wider one. As the west coast is very thinly populated and therefore traffic density low the building of sturdier 2 lane bridges is prohibitively expensive. I think this bridge always was a Baily bridge is because the river it crosses is fed by the St. Jozef glacier, one of the largest, and has the most severe flooding, it was not the first time this river took a bridge, and a Baily bridge can be built fast and relatively cheap as it uses standardised prefabricated steel segments.

The Tacoma narrows Bridge is well known, and it received detailed engineering studies for its failure. As the report mentioned, it wasn't a 'one off'. The bridge was twisting and turning even in a little over moderate winds. The way it was explained, that 'skirting' of the bridge badly resonated with the wind, causing the problem. By redesigning the skirting and subject it to extensive wind-tunnel testing, they solved this problem for the new, replacement bridge.

Didnt live to far from I-35w bridge when it happened. My power almost went out. 13 people died. Had to commute to work the next morning, i had to take the bridge over nicolette island(washington bridge?) and the traffic was so bad we did not move. I sat on a city bus in the middle of the bridge, terrified of that bridge giving way like the other one, while a couple of professional photographers took pics of the still traffic that combined the traffic of I-35 and the normal traffic that uses it everyday. We sat on that bridge for 45 minutes without moving. I think we were all late getting to our destinations that morning. But knowing the tragedy that happened in that same river the day before actually shook me to my core.

The bridge that is 200 feet tall at its maximum height somehow fell 500 feet...🤔

was it the Tay Bridge collapse in 1879 to which you're referring...? That was a spectacular collapse but wasn't' caught on camera until the following day. They retrieved the old steam engine that was sunk in the estuary and it carried on with the nickname the "diver" Many people died that evening and the bridge designer was (fairly obvs) a broken man as a result

Actually the rainy season in Thailand goes from the middle of April, when the Water Festival, Thai New Year is held to the end of November, when the Buddhist Lent ends with the Loy Khra Tong festival. Same to Indian rainy season from Holi to Diwali. Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia have the Winter Monsoon from October to March

I can't imagine seeing a bridge about to collapse and thinking filming it vertically was the way to go. It's not like a phone is hard to turn sideways.

It looks like the bridge proper didn't fail but that erosion at the abutment caused that end to drop, get pushed downstream and the rest of the bridge - still connected - got pulled off the piers sequentially. If the ground had been properly protected, I think that the bridge would have survived

There are approx 617,000 bridges across the United States so when two or three fall apart bridges are still a secure device.

" remember it was 1940"???? The Golden Gate Bridge was built in 1937. Bridge building was quite well understood at that point as the GG attests to.

The Tacoma Narrows bridge was the "first" of it's kind, no one had ever built a bridge that long (2800 feet, third longest in the world at that time) with a plate girder instead of the usual truss supports most suspension bridges have to this day. It was later determined that the plate girder resisted the wind too much, setting up oscillations that destroyed it) I wonder there is anyone who has not seen this film of the bridge collapse?

Incorrect. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge was built by the same people who built the Golden Gate. They in fact bragged about their second try and "how easy it would be in comparison." So they had built a big suspension bridge before

@@waltershumate5777 You could make the argument that it was the bridge that forced bridge construction into the modern age, with attention to aerodynamics as a key factor in the design of large, lightweight bridges. That is how I think of it anyways. Last of the old, first of the new. Either of those works for me.

Might want to double check you sources. Thailand does have a monsoon October to March, but it's a winter monsoon and thus dry. The summer monsoon is April to September, with the heaviest rains coming in July and August.

Living just outside of Pittsburgh which is known as the city bridges and a town known for our bridge I have this fear in my mind and seeing what happened recently here I questioned what they do to inspect and maintain the bridges. Thankfully I know they do here because I've seen it for myself. In downtown not so much.

Yeah, Bridge failures can encompass many things, bad design, poor materials in construction, Mother Nature having a bad day and few or none inspections along with bad maintenance.

Driving (or walking!) over any bridge makes me VERY uncomfortable. That landmark bridge in Pasadena CA, ( which is allegedly haunted) is especially frightening to me altho it is very historic and beautiful. (It’s not the possibility of ghosts that freaks me out.) I think it’s just the idea of falling. When I was an adolescent, my sister & I were riding bare back on our horse and went across a small bridge over a large irrigation canal. The bridge broke, we all 3 fell into the canal and the horse rolled over my sister, who was most concerned how we were going to get the horse out of the canal. Luckily she was not hurt (!) & the canal was empty of water at the time…Maybe that experience was the origin of my fears….(Stuff happens when you grow up in the country!) 😟

Washington state has had a 'LOT' of failed bridges. From the Narrows, to the Hood Canal, to 520, I5 and lot more.

the 2007 collapse of the 35W bridge here in Minneapolis should be on here. i think that bridge was bigger than any of these.

Save for the errors. Monsoon season in Thailand is misstated as October thru March and the bridge in Taiwan that was only 200 feet at its tallest "fell 500 feet"

The collapsing of the bridge in Hassanabad, Pakistan was not due to the "severe damage" of 120 degree + F temperatures. I guess that you forgot to notice that the bridge was swept away, literally, by the unending torrents of water that undermined it's supports. I never heard of temperatures being responsible for a bridge's destruction.

Designers of large steel bridges do think about thermal expansion on hot days I believe, maybe providing special joints. But yes, this was an arch bridge redirecting its weight into pushing outwards against the river bank, and could stand for only so long as the bank was there to take the thrust.

If you listen to the clip again, you will note that the unusual amount of floodwater was believed to be from glacial melt caused by the high temperature.

That bridge was built in the 1960s in a village called Hassanabad, the village is nearly 2100m above sea level and is the gateway to a mighty peak 7100m (unnamed) which is taller than Europe's tallest peak (6100m-6700m). It just connects the Hunza valley to some other places, it could be possible that the government never really paid attention in maintaining the structure of the bridge so it just broke like that lol *It didn't collapse because of high temperature, it collapsed because of glacial water floods due to high temperatures in Northern Pakistan as Pakistan is home to near 7000 glaciers, the most in the entire world outside of the polar region*

For reference, the islands in NZ are referred to as THE South Island & THE North Island. NOT South Island and North Island.

I live very close to the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. There's another story that a dog fell into the Narrows when the bridge collapsed. This bridge unfortunately also known for desperate people that jump to their deaths.

He thinks that Taiwan bridge fell 500ft. You can clearly see it is about 5 storeys high as it is 1 storey above the 4 storey building on the left (9:45). 1 storey is about 8ft. So it's about 40ft from solid ground. Let's say another 5 feet lower is the water from the ground. Thats 45ft. Unless that water is 455ft deep. It fell nowhere close to 500ft.

There are more deaths at the Tacoma Narrows bridge now, following its rebuild. This is due to people hurling themselves off of it.

I drove under a bridge the night before it collapsed. It was under construction and they used jacks that were too small to support it.

I have never seen a bridge melt before😳

On that Tacoma bridge i wonder if that car is still in the water, if there is anything left of it it might make for a nice dive and yes it is sad about the dog.

It's about 600 foot deep there with a very strong current. They left all that concrete where it fell which makes the current even more treacherous.

35W bridge in Minneapolis Minnesota, July 31st 2007..... 13 dead.... injured 145.... there is footage . I worked at the U of M Physicians in Orthopedics at the time.... I had the pleasure of meeting several of the brave survivors .... one individual that I cared for, was pulled out of the water ....what a tragic day

11:46 "Workers tried everything possible to stabilize the bridge but, their efforts were of little use." What the engineers and workers did was fine... If you are going to do a documentary piece on such a well researched engineering failure as the Narrows Bridge, then you better get it right! The winds were part of it but not the whole story. BTW: the stupid wind-vortices or flow-separation theory was proven wrong decades ago. It all has to do with the resonance of the steel cables and structure, any white noise source of energy (such as, but not limited to, wind) would've caused a similar failure. Engineers and 'workers' actually did install tie-down cables to the spans of the bridge outside the towers to prevent this well known resonance issue; and, where they were installed, these cables worked as intended. The plan called for tie-down cables to be installed across the central span as well but POLITICIANS decided it was too expensive. Don't take my word for it, simply look at the bridge moments before it fails. The center span is in resonance while the outer two spans are (relatively) stable. Only after the center section fails and the towers bend outward do the tie-down cables of the outer spans go slack and they too begin their own resonance mode.

From my point of view, the Morandi Bridge in Genua was the biggest cataastrophy of a falling bridge in modern history. The police films show the devestation of that collaps with 43 dead.

Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them). Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures. Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement. It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them. (19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).. Salam (Peace) -------------

Flooded bridges are probably my biggest fears. The disturbing sound of the first bridge being sucked under the water is probably going to give me nightmares ( 1:50 ) > _

Its not because the bridge was "flooded"... the colapse was most likely caused by a very turbulent flow of the water under the bridge->every bridge have its limit for amount of water that can go under the bridge without causing that. When water is swiming under the bridge like in the video the earth around supports and anchors is simply washed away by the river current and in the end this elements have no support from the ground to hold the bridge->that is why the water needed some time to destroy it. You can limit that by securing the river bead with concrete but that is not cheap and this bridge looked very basic so... build it right the first time or you will be building and paying for it twice.

So, as a New Zealander, our country has “The North Island” and “The South Island”. There is no such place as “North Island”. This is because its official name is “Te Ika-a-Māui”. There is no such place as “South Island” because the official name of that island is “Te Wai Pounamu”. North and south are thus geological positions not island names. Fun fact - the Tacoma Narrows bridge was not built to original recommendations by engineers. They built it on the cheap against engineers designs. That's why it was able to twist and bend in moderate winds. The inspector responsible for approving the design was bribed to accept the new design, well knowing it had safety flaws, even for the '40's.

I saw the film of the Tacoma Narrows bridge collapse on You Asked For It when I was very young. I've been bridge phobic ever since.

Galloping Gertie, had stay cables laying on beaches about to be installed as the bridge collapsed. The insurance covering the cost of repair, was never paid for the fee was stolen.
