This explains the two big holes in G 2- the open drapes/dead assassins and Rocco's suicide mission to kill Roth. I always thought of Rocco as a Jack Ruby analogue. Honestly, I think the assassins could just as easily paid off a housemaid to open the drapes. Someone who could be enter the room freely without arousing suspicion if they were seen. Anyone else going into that room while Michael's wife is sleeping there is risking a lot if someone walks in and find them. A maid could just claim to be cleaning. The reason why we probably don't discover which specific individual did it is because it wasn't important who did.

I think only Fredo, Tom Hagen, or their mother would not be taking his own life in his hands by going into the room to open the drapes while while Kay was sleeping. A mafioso might consider he could gain a big enough reward to do such a thing, but a maid? How much cash would she need to be offered? She'd be watched like a hawk afterwards and if she suddenly had money she'd be killed. So it'd have to be enough money to allow her to leave her life behind and set her up in another country. In fact I think it would have to be combined with blackmail or a long-term infiltration of the work staff because how could the would-be assassins be sure she wouldn't instead tip off the Corleones to the whole plan?

I think it was a miracle that Michael survived, let alone him and his wife were unscathed from this attack. I also think Rocco was one of the shooters that tried to kill Michael, because the smg that they found next to the bodies is a rare gun, and a particular prop from Godfather part 1. Rocco kills Phillip Tataglia(and a whore) in Godfather part 1 with a swedish m-50 smg (you can see him assemble it in Godfather part 1 during the baptism), and they find the same exact gun next to the two bodies they found in Godfather part 2. I always thought it was unusual because the first time I'd ever seen the m-50 was in Godfather 1 . I'm pretty well versed in firearms, so it always bothered me that I couldn't identify the gun when I first saw it, so I looked into it and I have no doubts that it was a prop with this specific implication within the plot. Rocco tried to kill Michael, and when Michael found out, he probably gave Rocco two options, but no matter what he chose, Rocco knew he would still have to die. That's why he suicided himself to kill Roth.

The more I see it, the more I realize that Part II isn't as tightly written as Part I. The whole Pentangelli subplot is also confusing, partly due to Danny Aiello's ad-lib that Coppala kept in . Pentangelli's murder was only interrupted because a police officer happened to notice the bar was open early and came in to check it out. Otherwise Frank would be dead and the whole Senate hearing part wouldn't have occurred. There's also the point that Roth was using the Rosato's to sow discord between Michael and Pentnagelli. Killing him makes no sense, but it was only happenstance that it failed. Aiello's line only works if Pentangelli was supposed to live, but there's nothing to indicate that.

I always though that the extent of Fredo’s betrayal was letting some of Johnny Ola’s men into the compound with him. Ola has a meeting with Michael while his men roam the compound and find the bedroom (how they knew, I don’t know but I guess there’s a million possibilities as to how you know where the main bedroom is) Who killed the assassins? I always though it was other assassins. Meaning a team of four get into the compound, they open the drapes etc, shoot at Michael, turn to get away by boat but two of them slit the throats of the other two. Meaning they were collateral damage. Decoys. Makes more sense to me than Rocco doing it.

I would have assumed it was the hit men, but that wouldn't make sense as they wouldn't have had a way to get inside. It definitely wasn't Fredo. Yes, it was totally in character for Fredo to go behind Michaels back and give info to people outside the family, but not in character for him to *knowingly* set his brother up for a hit. Also I could never figure out why the assasination job on Roth was done so recklessly, but this seems to be the best explanation out there.

I think it still could have been Fredo. The "kidnappers" best chance at getting Michael would be in his own room, so opening the curtains could have been part of the plan. As for the two dead assassins, in theory, it could have still been Fredo but it also could have been Johnny Ola. We already know he was at the compound earlier, he might have escorted the assassins into the compound, and if he hired them they might have had their guard down after failing. With Rocco's mission, he himself said it would be difficult but not impossible and the movie never hints at that possibility.

I think your exactly correct. It all fits; Rocco's suicide mission, the offer he couldn't refuse, Rocco's access to both Michael's room and the assassin's throats, and finally, Fredo's phone call response of "you lied to me." And this makes me think Fredo found out about Rocco's plan to kill Michael before it went down, before he said "you lied to me." Maybe Fredo only found out moments before or one day before but Rocco must have convinced Fredo that Michael would not be killed. And Fredo was stupid enough to believe Rocco because Fredo did nothing to shield his brother from Rocco's assassins. And Michael found out all of this and this is why he had to have him killed. You just can't run a business with people like Fredo around. Thank you so much for helping me put all of this together. This is why this is one of the greatest movies ever. Thirty years after release people still love to talk about it and there are plot twists that have been largely hidden.

Therefore he might not consider it a suicide mission and not worry about it being Michael's way of eliminating him. But only Puzo and Francis, who wrote the script together, would know for sure, and Puzo is dead. In such cases, Francis often says "I really don't know..." and it has been a lot of years since they wrote it...

It’s about honor. Rocco agreed to go into that mission as a payback to kill Roth. Rocco was the head of security and Roth’ attempt to kill Michael was a direct attack to Rocco’s life. Like when Don Tommasino was killed, Calò asked Michael the order to kill whoever did it; he accepted to kill Lucchesi knowing he was going to be killed too. It was a pay back for killing his master. For Rocco became a personal thing to kill Roth after the attempt on Michael s life.

Of all the possible explanations offered here, I think you have the most plausible one. The words honor and redemption are very important in this culture. Remember when Hagen tells Vincenzo Pentangeli after the Senate hearing 'the honor of your family is intact'?

When the attempted assassination happened, Michael wasn't returning home from a day of business. Had you watched the film you would have known this happened on the same day as his son's First Communion party. Michael and Kay had been dancing later in the evening and Kay retired early and went to bed. Michael was already at the compound; he never left and returned. In fact not much later there is a scene with Michael talking to his son in bed, and Anthony tells him he gots lots of gifts but he didn't know the people that gave them to him.

@@cheyennegalen Why wouldn't she shut the drapes before getting into bed? When she awoke, she obviously knew the situation was not normal. Someone else quietly got into the bedroom after she was asleep, and then Michael's entry awakened her and then she saw the open drapes. That means the party guests were all excused from the compound much earlier; only the "bad guys" surreptitiously hid in Fredo's residence. Fredo opened the drapes and returned to his residence to establish an alibi; Fredo thought it was supposed to be a kidnapping. The shooters went back to Fredo's residence for safe escape. Fredo was supposed to provide a safe escape for the "kidnapping", but then realized it was a hit attempt and ordered his loyal men to whack the shooters.

Michael told Tom that he loved and trusted him and that all the others were business men and that their loyal had a price. I don’t think Fredo wanted to kill Michael because he said that he didn’t know it was a hit and that they told him that there would be something in it for Fredo, without Michael having to give it to him. I don’t know why Rocco would take on a suicide mission and I’m not sure he was the one who opened the windows. There were plenty others around that could have done. I think Neri and Rocco were high enough up not to be traitors. Remember Rocco begged Michael to go back inside during the search.
