The guy who got his knee caps blown out when Vito killed Don Ciccio, was the same guy who years later, walked with a cane and told Michael about Sonny's (Santino) death. He kept Michael safe in Sicily. After Don Ciccio, was killed by Vito, the guy healed up and took over as the Don of Corleone.

I believe you misread the significance of Pentangelli’s brother’s presence. Frankie couldn’t corroborate with his brother there because it would disgrace his family. The look on his brother’s face says it all. He didn’t look frightened for his own life. He looked angry that Frankie would be cooperating with the government. Sicilians have a long history of despising government after years of being sh1t on by Rome. Frankie just couldn’t bring shame on hid family. Also, rather than guess, let the film tell the story. Kay was not in danger of being killed. That wouldn’t be an acceptable way of treating a woman in the Italian/Sicilian culture. Michael made sure however that she got rightly and thoroughly punished.

Only the real big epics or blockbuster films were around 3 hrs long so they had an intermission where they stop the film so you could have a break (refill your popcorn/drinks, go toilet etc.) and come back for the rest of the film. Nowadays its like no matter how long the film is.. you're expected to sit there the entire time or end up missing stuff soo yeea they should bring that back lol

You have now watched the two greatest movies ever made. I am 68 years old and have watched both countless times. Neither part 1 or 2 ever get old. I just want to point out a couple of things about both movies. First, the directing by Francis Ford Coppola. His genius is at the heart of these films. I serious doubt any other director could have done such a magnificent job. Next is the casting and acting performances in both films. Every single part, both big and small, was played to perfection by actors who almost seemed made for their roles. It's almost like they all knew how epic G 1 and 2 would be. Lastly, I've watched all the reaction videos and yours is the best.

The Don Ciccio character is different from Willie Cici. In Southern Italy Ciccio is a nickname for Francesco ( Frank in English) So it’s just the names sound close, that’s all. So the Don in Italy may have been named Francesco and preferred Ciccio, who knows. Could be better explained in the book.

When young Vito came back for Ciccio, one of their friends (the one who introduce him) was Tomassino. Tomassino in the first film, much older than here obviously, helped Michael in Italy when he killed the police officer and Sollozo. If you remember, Tomassino walked always with a cane due to a limp. That limp was produced because of the shot on the knee when he was young, in this moment when Vito murdered Ciccio.

I believe the whole deal with Franks brother wasn't a threat. It was an opportunity since his brother was an old school Sicilian mafioso for Frank to be embarrassed into not snitching and bringing dishonor. Notice his brothers facial expression when they first see each other. Disgusted. It also cleverly simply showed Frank that Mike didn't betray him, because the brother wouldn't have travelled to him from Sicily if he had, and that "betrayal" was the whole reason Frank went rat on Michael.

It dawns on me sometimes that Diane Keaton was in this movie & how young she was but yeah TerabyReacts's has a point Kay actually knew what she was getting herself into. When she & Michael were dating she asked him questions about his family at his sisters wedding & Michael explained to her what his family did. In a couple of scenes Michael sounded annoyed by her questions but he was preparing her for the life she was going to be in if she wanted to be with him he found real happiness with Apollonia but she was taken from him. Had she lived he wouldn't have given Kay a 2nd thought yeah, Kay would've been heartbroken but she would've moved on Apollonia would've remained faithful to Michael because she would've known her place in the family. The moment Kay saw Michael again when he came back she should've ran she knew what her life life would be like if she married Michael her life wouldn't be normal she would be the wife of a mafia boss. Yes, she would've had protection but her every move would be watched & there would be other mob families, cops, the FBI, CIA would be gunning for her if Michael so much as breathed wrong. And another thing when Kay said "Michael you are naïve presidents & senators don't have people killed" I was like "Hugh? is this girl that stupid?" & Michael just looked at Kay & said "Now who's being naïve?" I've watched movies & TV shows, read books, magazines & watched documentaries over the years & was surprised the length people in poiltics will go through to hold on to their power or oust someone from a position they want but are unfit for it. Politics is a dirty & dangerous business as well as boring as shit. And Kay doesn't have common sense to realize this?

  • @tomantush4867

Back in those days, in any days, the reason or reasons why a woman aborts her fetus is a terribly personal thing for her. Emotionally hard at the least, it is physically dangerous and can scar some women for life. The fetus might have had difficulties that preclude proper development. The stress or other health issues the mother may have might make carrying a child to term unsafe. After bonding with the idea of becoming a mother, willfully killing her fetus for spite is unlikely. Every miscarriage is a natural abortion. But Kay wanted out, and saying what she said in the most hateful, spiteful way worked for her. It was ugly, but she got what she wanted. I think a lot of audiences are too hard on Kay over that scene. It was all part of the theme of Michael losing everyone and everything close to him by trying to be in control of everything. This was one way where Kay had absolute control.

People always misunderstand the scene with Pentangeli's brother, probably because what Tom Hagen says at the end is never translated. He says: "The honor of the family has been preserved" The brother isn't there as a threat but as a way to make Frank Pentangeli feel the shame of betraying omertà, you can see on the look of his brother's face how shocked he is to see Frank standing witness for the government which is anathema for an old mobster from the old country, so Frank feels too ashamed to betray omertà in front of his brother who is a living reminder of the oaths he took etc. Anywya hope that clears that up.

That's exactly what I was gonna say. The look is more anger, astonishment, and contempt for his actions than fear. Frank didn't want to betray his oath in front of his brother, whom he greatly admired and respected. It would also disgrace his brother in Sicily, to be the brother of a very public snitch. Frank just couldn't do that. It also kinda shows Michael's power. On extremely short notice, he can call connections in Italy, and Frank's brother immediately flew over from Italy, then flew home immediately after. They probably never even spoke directly because Frank was in witness protection. Later, when Frankie talks to Tom Hagan about the Romans killing themselves after a plot failed so their families would be taken care of. He tells Tom exactly how he's going to kill himself, and Tom tells him 'Don't worry about anything." agreeing that if Frankie does it, his family will be taken care of, which is the best deal Frank Pantangeli could get after changing his testimony and losing his deal with the FBI.

G2 is one of those rare sequels that almost outdoes the first, and considering how amazing the first Godfather was that says a lot. It is longer, but in some ways it is also richer. People may say like with the first it is slow and takes a while to unfold. Of course, but I think that was deliberate. Both this and the first Godfather have an elegiac quality to them that makes them even more compelling. For one thing, the film is very well made. The cinematography is simply gorgeous, whether it is dark or autumnal or picturesque, and the settings are wondrous. The music once again is outstanding, it is haunting and sticks in your head for a very long time. Then there is a brilliantly written screenplay that is intelligent and thoughtful, masterly direction from Francis Ford Coppola and a fabulously constructed story. The film does have some wonderful scenes-: the scenes where Vito flees Sicily has the grandeur of a silent movie, while the scenes in Cuba actually avoid being clumsy and confusing and the climax is extremely chilling. Not to mention the Pop Goes the Weasel scene, which was very funny. The acting is superb once again. Vito is brilliantly portrayed by Robert DeNiro in one of his better performances and most definitely deserved his 1st Oscar win. I was also taken with John Cazale as Fredo. But the picture belongs to Al Pacino. He was great carrying the first Godfather movie after Vito died, but he is even better here. He is simply phenomenal, and to be honest I think he should have won that Oscar. Overall, an amazing film and one of the best sequels ever to be conceived.

Francis had a lot more power and money from the studio for the 2nd one. Over double the budget. It's a beautiful film shot in 4 or 5 real locations. The first GF was all shot in NY except some exterior 2nd unit shots of Vegas and Hollywood. The real actors were never in Vegas or CA. and Francis wrote the whole story and screenplay for part 2 vs the first one which was obviously based on the book. Some of the early Vito stuff was in the book but all of the Nevada storyline was written from scratch.

@@MrAitraining True but Coppola spent 4 times the money on G3 than he spent on G2 and it came nowhere near the quality of the first 2 even though I don't necessarily consider G3 a bad film. I just felt that G2 edged out the first one because it had a more intricate plot. A more thematic structure....the writing is extraordinary, and its structure is both unique and richly thematic. The film brilliantly contrasts the rise and fall of the Corleone family, with Vito rising to become the Don in the early 20th century and Michael destroying the family in the later years. The acting was also a bit better with more solid performances by Pacino, De Niro, Strasberg, Shire, Michael Gazzo and John Cazale who's performance underrated.

In the flashbacks, Vito was able to kill Don Finucci because he realized that he was all talk and was alone. He preyed on the other Italians who were used to the mafia. As long as he acted tough, people fell into line. But he never had guards, and he never carried out punishment for those who paid late or not enough. He agreed to let things slide or let people pay late because in reality he had nothing to back up his implied threats. That's why Vito eventually knew he could take him out. Vito was willing to act, and he also had friends. Then he grew his network from there. But he also did favors and built trust. Finucci just threatened and stole. Vito Corleone helped people, like the widow who was going to be evicted. He paid for children's schooling so when they grew up and became successful and powerful, they'd remember it was Vito Corleone that enabled their success and power. He did people favors so that in the future, when he needed something they'd want to help him, and repay the favor. He could back up his threats when necessary, but he built goodwill and preferred to NOT use threats or violence when necessary.

Italian and Spanish are pretty similar.. but this is Sicilian dialect which is a different game. Lots of Italians wouldn’t understand half of what they say. This and the Naples dialect are very similar. Lots of regional versions of Italian basically and then you have Classic Italian which is the clean and proper version you learn at school

Hyman Roth backs the rosatto brothers and the Corleone family backs frank pantangelli. So Roth gave the rosatto brothers the go ahead and kill frank so they could take over his territory. But when they killed him they said Michael Corleone says hello. I don't know why they would do that, if the man is already gonna die might as well let him die in truth

The guy whose girlfriend was in the play in the flashback scenes is Genco Abbandando, the son of the owner of the grocery store where Vito worked. He was Vitos best friend and became Don Vito Corleone's consigliere once Clemenza pulled Vito into the criminal world. Genco was replaced by Tom Hagen after he died. Its all explained in the book but unfortunately his character got cut out of the first movie because it would have been too long. Also all of the Frank Pentangeli scenes were originally supposed to be about Clemenza. Please check out both of the Godfather I & II versions with the commentary with Director Francis Ford Coppola. He explains a lot of the loose ends in the films. Also check out the films deleted scenes here on youtube.

It never made since to me when the "Black Hand" comes to the store that the Friend has to explain to Vito what is going on with this guy in the neighborhood. He says to the store owner you treated me like a Father - this is the man he has worked for a long time - he would have known about the man of death - the Black Hand it would not be news to him but they play his part in this like he just moved into the neighborhood. /// Italy is not very far from Spain and Portugal so it makes since they have a lot in common with their language. // The reason Michael said he can't trust Fredo is because Fredo is stupid he did not know that Fredo was doing deals with Roth thru Johny Ola. Roth had Pantangeline killed but told Pantangeline it was from Michael as they were choking him. // Frank Pantangeline worked for The first friend of Vito's Clamenza and when Clamenza died he left everything to Frank but he left a debt to Roth and Pantangeline did not pay Roth off so he was ticked. When Pantangeline went to Michael he could not understand why Michael would not let him kill Roth or his men. But Michael was trying to find out some things about Roth, he suspected him and did not trust him. // Yes the Italians were having parades with American Themes some of it - but they were Fierce American Loyals - they love this country and appreciated the freedoms - they retained their own cultures but blended in with American Culture all the same.

Cicci isn't related to Don Ciccio. He was the hitman who took out Tessio and Don Cuneo in part 1. No, Frank's brother is in a Family back in Sicily. He's old school, you don't snitch. He came ro remind Frank of that. Also, Michael actually trusted Frank. He knew that Frank is old school, if he wanted to take Michael out, he wouldn't attack Michael in his home. Especially if it put Michael's personal family in danger.

Don Fanucci was a wannabe... He was not a made guy. He was not official. The extended scenes show it in somewhat subtle ways that most ppl don't catch, and Vito tested him and he failed the test. A made guy wouldn't threaten with calling the police. And Vito saw him get his throat slashed by some thugs and he had no crew to back him up nor could he clap back. He was using the ignorance of the immigrants to his advantage to look like a big shot when he wasn't. The Mafia lore/ "literature" also is kinda needed for context which the movie obviously couldn't explain to the audience even with 3 hours, which you kinda need to understand the Fanucci angle and its relation to the plot and Vito's story. Sorry I'm a huge mob nerd, that shit is fascinating because it's like the street but with levels... and it REALLY happened. The mob did stuff hood guys or low to medium level criminals could only dream of, evidenced by the many rappers with mob names

The tragic downfall of Michael into a cold empty human being is so epic and depressing. Godfather 2 really in a sense is about the corruption of the American Dream. Seeing the old immigrant world of Vito, where it was all built on loyalty, respect within the community and their old family traditions.. and the contrast with the more modern corporate world that Michael lived in. Times have changed and as a result Michael was a victim of his time. Its interesting tho when we see the final scene, that Michael always has been the black sheep of the family. So makes you wonder if he always was meant to end up alone. He ended up pushing everyone away, and destroyed the family that was once so loved and respected.. into a dictatorship ruled through nothing but pure fear. May be irrelevant, but I have a feeling this is what George Lucas was going for when creating the Star Wars prequels and the story of Anakin/Darth Vader. They both go down similar paths where after losing loved ones (Anakin's mother/Sonny and Michael's first wife) they fall into darkness as a desperate attempt to protect what little they have left.

I can't tell about Spanish, but as a native Portuguese speaker, you can understand basic stuff people say in Italian if they speak slowly. There's videos on KZread about it, language experimentation where they put multiple Romance(meaning languages derived from Latin) languages speakers to try to dialogue each in their own language and you can discuss basic shit, it's remarkable.
