I read it at 16 and quite honestly, it left me thinking and thinking so much. The book has done a brilliant job at opening eyes to various types of people and their perception of the world. Of course bat the time of reading it I was to some extent taken aback at the psychological warfare of the characters but as I grew older it made sense . Life do turn out to be much more weird than a fiction.

I just finished reading it and your analysis is so on point. It was a bit hard for me to read it at first because of its back and forth writing style, but later I got the grip of it and it really stuck with me, the story and the characters. I highly recommend this book.

Love this book and your analysis. Roy’s work consists primarily of her non fiction writing and activism. Politics and social commentary are her driving force and the prism through which she views the world.

I love you...Brilliant analysis...it's my favourite book...I cried even the second time I read....Also, the lovemaking between Rahel and Estha in the end is one of the most beautiful things I have ever read or known about. I could feel how love- deprived they were, how much they craved warmth. I think, it was there way of sharing the grief that had been inside them ever since the tragedy. Only these two could understand what happened with them. Also, Roy has written about them they were two bodies, one soul...like a part of each other...so the lovemaking also symbolises the reunion of two separated halves.

Excellent...you went with it. This annotated approach was something Evelyn Waugh suggested to Nancy Mitford when Hamish Hamilton planned to republish one of her earlier novels.

Thanks a lot for the review! I’ve just finished this book and it’s amazing. I really liked the structure of the story, the characters’ psychology, and the language. Although I read it in Russian and it might have been adopted a bit to fit into our reality, I still think the author’s style is quite peculiar. I can’t help comparing “The God of Small Things” with “Doctor Zhivago” by B. Pasternak, probably because of the family saga. I will definitely read the original English book one day.

(I live in Kerala where this story takes place and I do not have the English proficiency to understand Roy's language in-depth, As I did not fully understand it, I read the Malayalam translation of it and understood a lot ...)

One of the most tragic moments for me was SPOILER ALERT… Estha’s experience with the orangedrink lemondrink man. Oh my God, did I gasp while realizing what was going on. I read this book once around 8 years ago. Still cannot forget the details and the tragedies of this story. Great read!

Thanks for this insightful sharing, Josh. I find Baby Kochamma rather tragic, to be honest - she appears to embody the idea of 'hurt people hurt people'. Her unrequited love for Father Mulligan is a source of lifelong pain, and perhaps that's partly what motivates her to sabotage Ammu and Velutha's relationship (her distaste for his Paravan identity also being a factor). What did you make of the incest between Rahel and Estha towards the end, though? I personally find that somewhat perplexing, if not gratuitous, but would be good to know your thoughts on how this element contributes to the novel.

Yeah I agree with your assessment of Baby Kochamma. It's a tragic life, but I still can't stand her for what she ends up doing. I agree with you about the Estha and Rahel incest. Thing. I guess the idea here is that these two are broken, and will continue the cycles of broken dysfunctional relationships. I guess a subversion of a happier ending where they reunite and things go well. That being said, I just didn't see much in the plot to really motivate their getting together like that, so I'm with you, it comes across as a bit gratuitous and heavy handed.

I just finished this book and the twincest scene was so disturbing that I had to do some research. Essentially, Roy included it in order to allow a Eurocentric audience to appreciate society's feelings about Ammu and Velutha's relationship. She understood that the typical audience wouldn't see anything inherently wrong with an inter-caste relationship, so we don't really have a strong emotional reaction to learning about Ammu and Velutha's relationship. In contrast, the majority of people are disgusted by an incestuous relationships. She links the two sexual events together at the end of the story because our disgust at an incestuous relationship is highly comparable to the disgust that society would have felt at an inter-caste relationship. I thought this was super interesting and it really elevated the novel in my eyes.
