one thing you'll learn watching kdramas is that in Korea, people rarely call each other by their actual names and will use honorifics instead. I've found that subtitling will almost always default to the character names to avoid confusion but you tend to lose nuance in relationships in this way. for example: "hyung" means older brother and is used by men to refer to an older man and their older brother. "oppa" means older brother and is used by a woman to refer to an older man, but also often used to refer to a male partner as a term of endearment. there are many others like "nuna" (used by man to refer to older sister) and "unnie" (used by woman to refer to older sister) but those are the basics for now. the more kdramas you watch, the more you'll pick up on the subtle differences these can have on the plot. ❤

Yeon-jin is actually more like yun (rhymes with fun) jin Hye-Jeong is literally yeh with an h sound in front. yeh rhyming with meh. Jeong is more like jung (rhymes with lung). I always found it easier to describe these sounds using rhymes as that's the best way to convey how exactly it sounds. Edit: Would also add that in normal fast speaking sometimes Hye IS pronounced just like heh. But technically it is as I described.

It's a screen space thing! CC is descriptive and focuses on assisting HoH & Deaf people, ("He sighs. Door opens. Ominous music." etc. etc.) dialogue will always be written differently to compensate the space taken up by extra audio descriptive text so that viewers aren't reading a delayed wall of text. Subtitles will be a better translation because it doesn't have to do all that.

Not to give away anything but with K-drama quite often there is a lot of sub plot to the story that connects to the main, which is confusing at first but reveals later in the story, so make sure you pay attention to details. Thus, the scene and time jumping can be kinda confusing and annoying at first but you catch up and get used to it later. Love your insights and already looking forward to the next episode.

When I first watched the show, the fact that Yeon-jin only amounted to a weather lady always threw me a little because I expected her to get further than that considering her background and personality. But I guess if she had become an idol she would be surrounded by bodyguards and it would've been harder for Dong-eun to get to her, so I wonder if the writers had to make her more accessible by just making her a weather lady.....unless weather anchors are a bigger deal in Korea?

I think the point of was to show that despite not being actually capable of doing her job, she got there with her family and her husband’s influence so it’s like being an admirable working mom without actually doing any hard work. She just get to stand and read a script she didnt even write and be pretty and is still admired by many who her on screen.

I'm pretty sure that in Korea, weather forecasters/news ladies- kind of like stewardesses- are seen as very respectable jobs for family-oriented women that are smart, did fairly well in school, and also look attractive. It makes perfect sense for this rich girl who wants a decent job where she can coast by on her looks and rely on her husband's income.

Being a news anchor is actually considered prestigious in SK. My understanding is that the process takes years and the standards for them are extremely high (education, background, physical appearance, etc.). I think they chose this career for the character because despite her not being capable, she was still able to not only get the job but rise up fairly quickly - solely from her connections.

Yeah unfortunately Netflix subtitles leave a bit to be desired. You really can't pick up on the cultural nuances like honorifics/titles. Koreans frequently address each other using titles (denoting job, relationship, status or age). I learned them because the places I watched Kdramas would have brief explanations of those terms. For example, the first time the drama used the word hyung they had in parentheses that it meant older brother or older male friend. They'd only do it the first couple of times and then just use 'hyung' in the subtitles instead of trying to replace it with a different word or the person's name like Netflix does. I really think it's better that way because the more you watch the more you learn about all the different titles, how/when they're used etc. It adds a whole other layer to conversations that Netflix just doesn't offer.
