The girl who said no to FGM

In a short edit from The Guardian and Accidental Pictures' feature documentary 'Jaha's Promise' we follow the journey of Jaha Dukureh from survivor of FGM and forced child marriage to Time's 100 leader and FGM activist. Confronting her past, her family, her culture, her religion, country and its leaders, Jaha became a lightning-rod for change in Gambia, her work contributing
to the eventual government ban on FGM and child marriage.

    That is not how the Clitoris works and women of FGM can still orgasm as orgasms are from the BRAIN. Most of the Clitoris is INTERNAL which most or all stays intact during FGM. There is a doctor in USA who reverses FGM and gives women their dignity and confidence and sexuality back. This woman spoke many untruths--did not know the facts

  • @kristine8783

    @kristine8783

    @@k8lynmae Ok, first of all, orgasms do NOT come from the brain. Orgasms are your bodies psychical response to sexual pleasure. The clitoris is designed for female pleasure and a woman cannot experience full pleasure if part of it is mutilated.The clitoris has 8,000 nerve endings which is twice as more nerve endings as what a penis has, so you cannot say it doesn't take away pleasure. Also, 50 to 75 percent of women say they need clitoral stimulation to have an orgasm so how would a woman feel pleasure if the most sensitive part is cut off? You have no clue what you are talking about and please do research before you speak about this issue that you claim you know so much about.

She talked the guy into backing down off his position and when he said it was a "choice" she decided yes okay then I'll use that, even though she knows it's not true. I.e. Unlike when a lot of westerners come in she understands she can't change their minds in one conversation, and rather than try to push facts down their throats her goal seemed to be to sow a seed of doubt--and you can see with her dad that it worked. He didn't believe her initially, but he started to question it, and researched it and found the information himself, and when his next daughter was born he was in a position to hear her and change his mind.

It's too late for those girls, but when they have daughters of their own they will have at least a little bit more information about the cost of FGM, and at the very least might ask questions instead of doing it simply because it's always been done.

Over the years I have learned a lot and I cry for every tiny baby, young girl and young woman who has been mutilated. God did not make a mistake when he designed men and women. my heart cries out to this. I am a victim of FGM, my clitoris was removed when i was a young girl without my mother knowing while i was in the care of my paternal grandmother. As a teenager, i have always wondered what a clit was and why women always referred to it as a feel-good spot. It really broke me when i realized that i didn't have one when i found out about my FGM in divorce papers, i'm not going to lie, it really hurt and it gave me a lot of distrust against my grandparents and Islam in general. I feel inadequate as a woman, i can't feel good and it saddens me because what if my future partner sees that i can't feel good too? Would he be discouraged? This video touches a really tender spot in my heart because it is rarely ever talked about and is such a taboo topic. I am blessed to have found this woman, a true feminist pushing for the greater good in places where topics like this can be very dangerous to speak against. She is a hero, this brings tears to my eyes, god bless her heart for her bravery.

    it's crazy to hear that one woman saying that women can't deliver a baby if she's not cut because fgm actually can and often does make it more difficult to deliver than it'd be otherwise

    One of my research papers was on FGM. My professor was quite impressed and gave me a prefect score. He then asked me to do a PowerPoint presentation to help educate the class because prior to the assignment I, nor anyone in my class, had never heard of this before. FGM is atrociously inhumane and deplorable and I pray that this horrific mutilation is never performed again.

    It is traditional, not Islamic. It is traditional in most parts of Africa. It's practised in my culture, Igboland of South Eastern Nigeria, and we are NOT Muslims. The practice is phasing out, though. I am from a large family as my father married many wives. My Sisters from 1970s have not been cut. My dad was culturally progressive and he left the decision to the girls and their husbands. I was neither for it nor against it. How could I take a position about something I did not understand? I am not a woman. I am, though, for male circumcision both for cultural reasons and medical cleanness. I admire the work the young woman has done and her successes. Nothing in any culture is set in stone. You can change any aspect of a culture that doesn't make a rational sense if you go about it the right way. The power of reason is our greatest tool as humans to bring about a different outcome.

    From what I’ve read, male circumcision is also unnecessary. It may actually increase likelihood of infection with STIs, it cuts off the tissue with the most nerve endings in the penis (most sensitive part), and actually has negative ramifications on ease of thrusting during sex (the foreskin reduces friction, so missing it means more painful and awkward sex)... so, while I’m a woman, and I don’t know anything personally about the impact of male circumcision, I’ve learned enough that I would never circumcise a poor little baby boy.

    MRS. JAHA DUKURA, May your name be PRAISED for all of time for the permanent advancement of females of ANY age to not be abused, cut, mangled, mentally damaged with long term anxiety, dysfunction, even PTSD. YOU ARE A HERO FOR all people by reminding, affirming, and motivating change to protect us from obsolete, if not barbaric, traditions to alter a body of any minor or unwilling, or uneducated person! NO ONE SHOULD EVER EVER EVER have the position of POWER to surgically, or barbarically, remove ANY body part HUMANS are BORN WITH! Adults, once educated on the topic, can always go and do a procedure to alter their sexual sensations, remove them or reduce them. But under NO OTHER circumstances does ANYONE have the right to tell a minor or an uneducated person to give up parts of their body, their organs. SKIN is the LARGEST ORGAN on the human body. The vulva and penile skin is extremely fine tuned specialty skin with up to 1000 times more nerve endings in one zone than on some other areas of the body. To remove foreskin-THE MOST SENSITIVE SKIN with the MOST nerve endings, is an ONGOING TRAGEDY. Yes men are left with some of that skin. But if they had ever felt the difference as an adult, the majority would KEEP that very wonderfully sensitive skin God designed for men. Women's clitoris has MORE nerve endings in it than the entire penis. To remove it is MORE than equivalent to removing all the outer skin nerves of the penis, leaving only nerves on the inside of the shaft. LEAVE female anatomy alone. It's very very precious and gives a wonderful gift between husband and wife when they become one, in body, and commitment. Those two parts were PERFECTLY designed to work together for equal pleasures of love, desire, and therefore brings about new life just as perfectly. THANK YOU JAHA 100, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000 times... for all the girls in the future that will be saved from a life of dealing with frustration, anger, anxiety, confusion, self loathing, negative body image, suicide, loss of sensual desires, painful sexual activity, infections, illness, death, fear, powerlessness. YOU GAVE ALL THESE WOMEN and MOTHERS and GRANDMOTHERS, SISTERS, AUNTS the ability to support one another to keep holding ground of sane, sound permanent life decisions. WE APPLAUD YOU JAHA!!!!!!!!!

    I have great respect for your work on FGM. I had shared my story on another platform about seen my first FGM as a Canadian nurse because for many years, I could not get it out of my psyche. How can anyone be so evil to another human being for the soul purpose of men's sexual pleasure? When I was in the ninth grade in a Canadian middle school, this was the first time I had heard of fgm because of a classmate from Serra Leone who had FGM. She would complained of chronic infection because of her fgm and when the time came to have her first child, she was incredible fortunate that she was in Canada where she had the "state of the art" medical system that save her life and her unborn. Now you tell me, what God and /or culture could enjoy this type barbarity for the pleasure of men because that's what fgm is. Love your determination my sister. Love, light and kindness
