The Gibson SG Modern That Most People Hate...?

Музыка

In today's review, I am checking out the Gibson SG Modern. This guitar is not as popular as the classic models, but I love the feel and tone of this electric guitar. The color of this Gibson SG Modern is called Trans Black Fade, and it looks fantastic. How good is the Gibson SG Modern? Here's my review!

Hey Shane. A really good review. I've had one in trans black for a little over a year and love it. Picked it up at the Guitar Station Sth Yarra, a shameless plug but Henry really looks after you over there. The ebony fretboard is slick and fast. A great guitar. The pickups go off, heaps of sustain. I play metal, hard rock, blues and this guitar handles those styles really well. The neck dive is not that bad at all and easily fixed with a wide, grippy leather strap. I have a Les Paul modern, same Gibson series, which has the same pickups and interestingly they respond and sound different in each guitar. Seems to have more gain and more focused upper mids in the SG. Pickup heights are pretty much the same in both guitars. Both guitars sound and feel great. Cheers.

Thanks for the review Shane. Aesthetically my Epiphone Modern SG looks very close with a brown tinge to the fade (apart from the headstock) & I love it. I love the asymmetric neck. Be interesting to compare the Gibson vs the Epiphone. I'm highly tempted to buy some Burstbuckers for it as the Gibson sounds great. Did it have the out of phase coil split, as the Epiphone has one on the push pull on the tone knob? Fretwork was great on the Epiphone (I might have got lucky there). Perhaps you could get Ben to compare the two in Sky Music on your return from the US?

For the SG experts. Does the 24 fret version heel joint make the neck tenon a little more sturdy than the 61' SG 22 fret? These may be old myths, wiggly necks & etc. Confused on why Gibby has different heels on each of their SG models. With my limited knowledge, I always leaned towards the SG Standard (if I was going to purchase) since it has more heel mass and a higher connection point up the neck. Is my thinking flawed?

Funk-style guitar is obviously more often than not, primarily associated with Tele or Strat single-coiled tones, but from personal experience, an SG dialled in properly (hold the gain!), can clean up really nicely in that dept. With some satisfying added chunk to the overall tone.

My first NEW guitar, was an Epiphone SG Modern from the "Inspired by Gibson" collection that launched in 2019. All around good instrument that had some features I figured would get me where I wanted to go. After about 9-10 months I started noticing tuning instability depending on how I was holding it. The inherent design of these set neck mahogany guitars can lead to neck joint movement that's hard to quantify. It was too much for me and got returned. The finish wasn't cracked anywhere and I'd had it plek'd and everything! The action was in the weeds low and that neck profile is by far the best Epiphone had offered before the '59 LP's. I'm much happier with the LTD '87 Eclipse NT in pearl white that I traded up for. To each his own.

While I'm not a huge fan of the colour of this particular one, I wouldn't be opposed to a flame top in a more traditional colour. I've got an Epiphone SG from years back in honey yellow that looks fantastic. And having the jack on the side is a great idea - it's one thing that erks me on an SG when you accidentally step on your lead and pull the lead. The tops always prone to damage this way asit's so thin. Whereas it's secured much better at the side (much like what they do with the Tony Iommi models).

SG's are very special. I grew up in the 70's, and for me, at that time, they WERE the "sound of rock". Bands like Groundhogs, Blue Oyster Cult, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Budgie, and of course Sabbath, all had that raw, gnarly, SG "bark". It always sounded sort of "untamed" to me. Especially in comparison to the ubiquitous Les Paul. It is Gibson's "Tele". Which is why, to this day, after 50 years of playing, SG's and Tele's are STILL my favourite guitars.

It's funny how some guitars have their weaknesses , for example , Strats have the volume to close , SG's are neck heavy , Les Paul's are too heavy . Tele's too much treble , etc. But when PRS comes out with all these problems solved it's a bland lifeless piece of wood !

well you can get the epiphone version and swap the pickups for burstbuckers, and you would get basically the same guitar but for around $1,400 less.

@@snow15243 basically, but for a discriminating pallet the difference will be noticed. Love EPI, but haven’t played one, even with Gibson pups to be equal in tone and playability.

I never liked them in stores. Then I bought one, put a strap on and played standing like I normally do and I fell in love pretty quickly. Probably my favorite guitar at the moment.
