THANK YOU! My grandparents had purchased one of the lots, which passed to my Dad, and he doesn't know what to do with it. This was extremely helpful thank you!

I had a relative that got suckered into buying a couple lots, he paid the taxes for 40 years and no return, he died and we continued to pay the taxes until well after his wife died. We are now a good 60 years later and I’m glad they talking about doing something. After talking to a lawyer and real estate people we have stopped pay taxes, it maybe the best for the area if they just eminent domain the land anyway.

Thank you! My grandmother & great-grandmother bought lots years ago! It's very cool to actually see it, kinda what I expected, but thank you. I would honestly love it if they just eminent domain took it - what am i going to do with it from way up here with 3 lots spread out and way away from any hope of infrastructure. But most of all, thank you for doing this - I could see how you could really upsell it into a great area (pre-internet, of course)

My folks bought about an acre and a half in the 1960s. We still get mail every once in a while saying that the sender wants to buy the lot. As far as I can tell none of these offers are real. It's just scammers continuing with a new scam aimed at victims of an old one from nearly 60 years ago. They usually say they have a buyer provided you pay them their "fee" up front. Something to that affect.

Thank you! My grandparents inherited 2 lots totaling 0.5 acre from my grandpas aunt. My grandma forgot all about the land since recently. I called the number on some papers she found and none of my family has called about it since 2008. I’ll be calling the county to see how much is owed in back taxes and see if they are willing to make an offer!

Great info regarding the so called “ghost lots”. I’ve always wondered what happened to the owners of those lots. I hope the county drags their feet so I can enjoy a few more years of off-roading out there.. plus I like not having any neighbors hahaha

My parents bought two of these lots and paid taxes on them since the 1960s. My parents are both gone and my sister and I own them now. Guess we'll reach out to the county and see what to do next. We occasionally get letters from developers wanting to buy them.

If some of those landowners haven't been paying property taxes, could the county come at them with a property tax bill? If so, would El Paso County say "pay your property tax, or we will take your property? Just a thought.

Possibly, but I think the problem there is they wouldn't be able to resell the land without water access. County doesn't want to pay that.

I remember back in the early 90s there were billboards up along joe battle selling 10 acres for $10k. I looked into it and the land was in the Joe battle & pelicano area. I bet whoever bought that land made some money.

How would someone go about getting “ a fair & reasonable offer”? Do we call the county or would a offer from a developer be a better way to go? We get letters from companies wanting to buy - some are not even from Texas- hard to determine if they are legit.

@@brettm4643 I am! but with a twist... my (and my sister's) 2 lots are still in my late father's name, c/o my mother who passed in 2018!! Mom kept up paying the taxes on it and we have too. I am afraid it would cost us more in attorney fees to straighten this out than the lots are worth!

I have to agree with @cocogomez1987 here. When you look at other cities in the southwest, like Las Vegas, with their current water/resource issues you could say this stems from over development. If we're going to develop in the El Paso area we should do it sustainably and smart. Maybe these "ghost lots" should remain that way.

My understanding is that the government has to pay the owner what the government thinks is fair market value under eminent domain. Is that not correct?

What ever happened to when the taxes are not paid, the property goes to tax auction? Problem solved. Leave it to government to make a non-issue into something to spend more money on. If the taxes are paid, mind your own business, it is private property. Common sense is just not that common any more.
