In this video me and @DekuGamer go in-depth with Splatoon 3's new UI design. They've made huge but subtle changes to improve the experience for users, and I want this work to be appreciated. So many of the UI elements enforce the “Chaos” theme of the game without making it too cluttered. It honestly makes me wonder how the UI would be designed if “Order” won.

Something I don't really see pointed out, is how that the Splatoon 3 character basically scrounged up the gear at the beginning of the game, they got it from a random box during the tutorial after all, and how that ties in to the whole arts and crafts atheistic of the menus in the Splatlands. The MC of this game basically started from nothing, even Sheldon points out how the Jr they have is old tech. So it makes sense for everything to have this crude arts and crafts design, it's as if the character designed them themselves, like sticking the map of the square in a book, elements like that. It's a wonderful bit of unspoken or undisclosed storytelling that I really like.

Not a UI thing, but I wanted to add to what you guys said about the Deep Splatcast. I really appreciated this video! I’m an artist myself so I noticed a lot of things like color contrast and satisfying little menu animations that the average player might not notice. I hope more people can realize that each tiny piece of this game was made with love, care and purpose by an artist to make it the best experience possible for us!
I can't express enough just how helpful that little flourish animation the player who has the RM is going to be for me - I've had a LOT of instances in S2 where by SHEER COSMIC COINCIDENCE, me and the teammate who REALLY got the RM went in EXACTLY the same path for nearly ten seconds after picking it up, leading me to think I still definitely had it (especially if I got there first) and then I go to try and shoot, and suddenly my normal weapon is activating, leading to lots of confusion that usually causes me to get taken out, leaving the RM unprotected.
Honestly i watch splatoon 2 and 3 side by side and i can tell which is which mainly because of the UI. So i agree. The special markers are amazing too, as are the new 2D weapons and death markers.

It felt a bit overwhelming having all this new info in the ui, menus, and even just getting to know the square's layout itself, but I appreciate it all. Tbh we need more custom options for the d-pad and imo the option to vc at least in ranked modes. Also, the one change that I did take note (everything else washed over me for too much info to process at once) in game was the respawn bar filling up. Overall this a great video and I'll try to keep an eye out for all these other changes you highlighted in here.

Native Voice chat(or the lack thereof) is the one thing that's holding Splatoon back from perfection. It's SO GOOD in every aspect, but communication is so important in this series, so it's just odd that they limit VC to a stupid app that nobody wants to use, so pro players are forced to use discord if they wanna communicate. Hopefully we'll get native VC someday, but until then, a man can only dream😞

@@MyLoserBrain honestly I might be a bit biased, but I’d say Inkblot is a great map for Clams, possibly even the best CB map (had some killer matches there a bit before 3 released) IMO it strikes the perfect balance of distance between everything, making CB matches incredibly fast paced. Even going strictly defensive is a great time. With the small tweaks 3 brought to the map, it’s even better (although, I am gonna miss the steps up to base from 2)
That effect where obsticles go transparent when they get in the way of the camera was in Splatoon 2 but in that game the whole object would go transparent so you couldn't see it at all. I've found myself holding down on the joystick and wondering why I couldn't move backwards. In 3, you can still see the obsticle on the edges of your screen with that dithering fade-out effect so you can tell when you're up against a wall while still being able to see. This improved my life a lot because there were mutliple situations where I died because I forgot there was something behind me in Splatoon 2.

something I noticed about the shops: the headgear shop is ip a flight of stairs, the clothing shop is level with where you are when you start up the game, and if you look into the door of the shoe shop, it's a flight of stairs downward. this relates to where each respective piece of gear would go on the player.
The little bits that I also love is that the selection squid arrow has a twirling animation. In the battle pod in the lobby, it makes the music playing on the speakers fully clear so you can just sit there and listen to it if you want. I love the text boxes for Marigold. They gave her so much personality, she reminds me of a sweet lunch lady or one of my aunts, honestly. I love that if a teammate is using a "Boost Battle Money/EXP" ticket for themselves and teammates, the icon will show up at the results screen when you're back in the lobby. So many little things about this game give it a huge amount of love and it's really nice that the devs truly worked hard on this game.
This video is absolutely amazing, such a good analysis of the series UI! On the topic of the communication d-pad, I think I know why they will not add 2 more comms to the missing directions. If there would be 2 more comms they would of course need to translate them into all the languages the game supports. When you translate words they don't tend to take up the same amount of space, so I think they just didn't bother trying something with it. Either they should make a new system or one simple solution that I also posted on my Twitter is adding left and right arrow icons to swap to more communications.
The first thing I look in sequels are the UI. I immediately noticed that it was really different and knew that Splatoon 3 was gonna be different from 2.
It's truly amazing how much detail there is in all of the UI in this game. Incredibly efficient at communicating it's purpose as well. I feel like game awareness is much more intuitive because of it. It was great working on this with you! And once again, I will praise your phenomenal editing and your analysis skills because I would have missed a lot of this on my own haha
1:50 I kinda wish the kill icon had less white in it. It takes just a moment to tell what color is on the outside of the X. Also, it’s worth noting how it’s a splat if you killed, an X of a teammate killed, BUT it’s a _circle_ if you got an assist for a teammate’s kill. Handy stuff!
another amazing detail that's not really UI related but I find awesome- If you skip the news and listen to them instead, if you walk over to the window and look at deep cut you can actually see the news in real time! They'll do all the proper animations and the screen will show the current stages too, and they'll even do their little ending pose before going back to their idle animations afterwards!
This was just such a well put together video. You pointed out so many details i would have never noticed. You've got a bright future ahead lf you kid.,

As someone who has studied Human Computer Interaction as part of my Psychology degree, I'm very happy to see Splatoon's UI evolve so much. Nintendo made it so much more intuitive and common sense evoking.
The tape and the arts and crafts feel of the menu really makes the chaos in order and chaos.
One thing- the tube-thing in the lobby where you select and queue into games is an electric kettle! It fits into the idea with Splatoon using modern technology around the world. Thank you for pointing out these out! It’s really cool to appreciate the small details to make Splatoon 3 so cohesive.
The Ink Tank is also a bit bigger, which makes it better for people to see how much ink you have left. Not a big change for most people, but for people with less vision, it is a welcome change.

It’s been years since I played Splatoon 1 on Wii U and took all these changes for granted when first starting up Splat 3, but looking back at Splat 1 it now looks like an alpha build
The graphic designer side of my brain is so giddy while I’m watching this lol
SO THAT"S WAT IT IIIIISS. I subconsciously refrained from going to the weapons menu too but it always felt weird in splatoon 3 because i wud have this anxious feeling prior to opening only to wonder y i was anxious after. So i was just left with this weird feeling of confusion from expecting a negative but actually feeling like i was overreacting - now i know I WASNT OVER REACTING. Loading the weapons menu in splatoon 3 was soooooo ass lol. But the load time in splatoon 3 is sooo consistent, the lobby menu, the weapon menu and the ZR+LR tv turn on load just about the same.
i definitely wish they added new communication options, but i also think it could take up too much space (especially once translated) in my opinion, the best ones to add would be a "don't come my way" or some kind of "run away" thing, to tell players to NOT go to you. another one could be "paint the zone!" or "go for the tower!" or whatever the main objective is. EDIT: I've come up with better communication options! While alive: UP: This way! RIGHT: Stay back! LEFT: Go ahead! DOWN: Booyah! While splatted: UP: Ouch... RIGHT: Wait for me! LEFT: Go ahead! DOWN: Booyah! If my Splatoon fangame ever gets completed, I would want to add these as quick communication options.

Thank you so much for this information. There are often details I miss while playing the game. I’m planning on getting into rank in Splatoon 3, but was quite discouraged because of the verity of new things they added. It’s nice to have something’s pointed out and explained rather than being overwhelmed to learn while playing and missing specific details. I also love the other small details too Splatoon has definitely come a long way since the first one released. 😊
I also love how when it does the transparency cutout for elements that get between the player inkling and the camera, the border is a halftone frit-dot gradient like you see on the edges of car windows. Gievn camera shenanigans (even corrective ones) can be confusing and disorienting, I thought that was a real clever way to effectively communicate "it's a window, you're seeing through something"
Honestly just forever my fave change is going to be them actually adding loadouts. I love just being able to pick a freshest fit when I'm in a full lobby that I know it'll work in.

one of the best things about being pinged for team specials that I noticed last night is that if there's a crab tank or reefslider coming in, you can quickly tell whether it's your team or not without even seeing it
Splatoon 3 is my introduction to the franchise, and can attest that these details are easy to overlook. Not saying I missed the x telling me that a teammate just died, but these elements blend into the experience. The amount of information you can see in the hud is kinda intense. I appreciate knowing how special all the subtle map and equipment inventory is too. Would've taken it for granted, but in comparison to the previous title it is crazy. Almost feels like a different game. Or maybe different phases of development? Great vid, thanks for opening my to all the subtle effects and elements that add so much to the feel of these game. One that has prevented me from binging monster hunter rise 25/7.
a friend of mine asked me shortly after release what's so different about the game except for a few new stages, weapons and cosmetics, and a new setting of course what exactly warrants a sequel instead of an update? i said that of course first of all the last game came out like 5 years ago but also that there's probably so many small changes that you don't really notice if you're not looking for them, but that just make the whole game so much better and smoother overall and looks like i was right on the money, and this series is gonna be a great aid to convince him xD i love every single change they made as mentioned a lot on the video and in the comment section, it really embraces the theme of chaos well, without it being chaotic, as dumb as that may sound and the contrast that the campaign feels even more sterile in comparison now is also great i mean it always has been, it always had this kind of portal setting, especially the octo expansion but this time it's even more exaggerated by comparison i was kinda disappointed that they dropped the fanservice-y style after "world 0" but it really was for the better and after the finale i also can't complain really and the overall clutter of styles this game has, but with it all being and feeling fully intentional i've been a big fan of the splatoon series for a long time and i was worried how i would like the new more chaotic setting, with all the inklings and octolings being even bigger zoomers than before xD but it is all designed so well and meticulously, i really can't help but love this game now i would only need to be good at it :') this really is one of the most polished AAA games to come out in quite a long while and i am not sure whether i should be happy for the game or sad for the industry

I like how they changed the ink tank to a reservoir, like one you would use on hikes. The tube that you see as the reservoir empties is also a nice touch.
I NOTICED THE LITTLE SPIN TOO AND I LOVE IT TOO YOU GET IT
It was at 12:28 when looking at the menu was when I realize that BigMan makes sense in the idol group and what he brings to the trio's dynamic - a background, or harmony. The UI is the same colors as the idols and they nailed it with the color composition.
Just before watching this I was just opening and closing the match menu for a good few minutes just to appreciate it lol Love how clever the open/close animation is, and the panels use a combination of gaussian blur, refraction and scanlines which is just so so cool I'm a tech artist and this makes me want to recreate those menus so badly (and maybe steal a few ideas for my own work...)
I also love the fact that you can just press the "clean up" button while queing up for a match. Its brilliant!
Haha.. oh yeah i noticed the Tacti cooler thanks message too! thats my favourite thing too.
Splatoon 3 really went all out! There’s so much happening on screen and it’s all very satisfying to see
I think the reason the UIs look more high tech now is because inklings and octolings aren't divided anymore (much like races in the real world) and the cultures came together into one, as well as the tech the octolings have.
Nice channel name you’ve got there
6:18 I mean, yeah... but I feel like the flashing around the Respawn Punisher icon is pretty good at conveying that, too :P

I decided to mention that because Respawn Punisher cancels the respawn effects of Tacticooler. I thought I had tacticooler in the footage shown, but basically the respawn graphic in the corner has the tacticooler icon but it fills as if you didn't have it if that makes sense. Sorry for the miscommunication. You're totally right about the glowing Punisher icon being a great indicator, I just have the habit of checking the map after getting splatted so I usually miss it lol
ive played 1557 hours for splatoon 2 and about 100 with splatoon 1 so i immediately noticed all of these its so cool to see such little changes that they put to really sell the chaos vibe
this series is getting too fresh
Man I love this video! So many small details. One disagreement though: the map being pictures was so hard for me to try and figure it out. I was overwhelmed by how busy everything is. It’s very cool! But as someone who likes to know where everything is I didn’t get it, and the tape arrows were so subtle I didn’t see them without your explanation. Obviously I figured it out but I think maybe a single overhead or some other map would’ve worked better for me.
great video !
As someone who mainly plays Salmon Run, my favourite UI change has to be the "one player left!" message the game practically screams to you when- as you guessed- there's only one player left standing. In 2 I'd often lose rounds because I or a teammate didn't realise 3/4 of us were dead, now I'm able to quickly switch to looking for people to revive as soon as the game yells at me about it
the UI is animated and designed so well and i’m blown away..
the tube thing in the battle lobby is called the Battle Pot. and you might like this-- the inflatable cover balloons are actually taken from real life paintball arenas. i believe theyre called bunkers or something like that and they look like a total match
One thing missing from the whole lobby menu when you're in queue is weapon freshness. Both the overall level and your win streak. Both stats are something you wanna look at and you just can't without quiting back to the normal lobby.
honestly my only real complaint about the ui is how confusing it was to get to tableturf, it took me like 10 minutes to figure out where it was because of how the splatsville map looks. but thats my *only* complaint. the UI is great, such an improvement
This was a really nice video! small details like this that people will point out are amazing and make me appreciate the game more. (also side note how have you gotten the gray hoodie cause Ive been trying to get it)
6:59 LMAO I feel the salt with that one, mate
Stuff like this makes me think back to how people were complaining that a lot of design elements were brought from Splatoon 2 back into Splatoon 3, like similar maps and weapons and clothing. Seeing this analysis? I think I know why they did that now - it freed up A LOT of time to nail the general design of the game. Nothing in the game feels rushed, and them borrowing from the previous game probably helped make it not rushed.
Clam blitz hate let's goooo!!! Also the view-blocking objects turning partially transparent with dithering was something I instantly noticed because it was a pet peeve of mine in 2, so many time I would get blocked by a bumper that had turned completely invisible, it was really stupid.
