The GENIUS Defensive Adjustment From LUKA And The Mavs...

Спорт

The Mavs had a do or die game plan on defense. A radical approach that ended up working geniously for them.
But before even getting to that, it all started with their hounding one on one defense.
Look, this is the first minute of the game, and Derick Jones Jr is picking up PG way past half court.
The Clippers could not even look at the basket for this entire possession, for the full 24 seconds as we see Kyrie poking it out of Harden’s hands and forcing a shot clock violation.
Just look at these contests here both on Paul George and James Harden, the guys that went off for 66 points in the previous games, were only allowed 6 for 25 in this one.
A phenomenal job of honing in on Harden and PG, and great on ball defense.
But this was actually the trick for Dallas. The Mavs went all out on stopping these 2, clogging the paint and completely sagged off of the other Clippers players.
And there is probably no better example of that than this. Almost every Dallas defender is in the paint, and they’re not even looking at Westbrook as he’s all alone in the corner, he gets it, fires away and misses.
Check out where Doncic is on this dance by Harden. He’s clearly ready to help on the drive and not worrying about Terrance Mann being open here. So as the ball goes to him, Luka makes an effort to get back, Mann shoots and another miss.
Again, at this point it’s comical how Dallas is begging Russ to shoot, and he actually does it, allowing for some easy defensive possessions for the Mavs.
Even on the occasional make by the Clippers, there was no change of plan.
You can see that Kyrie is not even looking at Coffee, the focus is to help on the Harden penetration.
As we stop it right here both Coffee and Mann are completely wide open as the paint is packed.
Now, as we let it roll, the ball goes out, and he knocks down this 3 pointer, but Dallas did not panic whatsoever and stuck to their strategy. So what happened?
Well, at one point LA missed 16 3 pointers in a row. 16 straight. Watching all of this James Harden may have had an ugly flashback to the infamous game 7 against Golden State where his team missed 27 straight.
Some of it may be good fortune for the Mavs here, but a lot of these are definitely based on the good game plan, knowing who to focus on and who to leave open and invite him to shoot.
Then, there were also a lot of live turnovers leading to this.
Maaan, Kyrie doing ridiculous Kyrie things here in transition, toying with his opponents. And as it turned out, Luka was doing Luka things as well because…
Doncic had 35 in this game but it was the 10 assists for me, creating easy points for his teammates.
And it sure feels good when it’s one of those days and a role player steps up and helps the team by shooting absolutely lights out, which was Maxey Kleber in this one.
Kleber went 5 of 7 from downtown, that’s 15 bonus points on the road to secure a crucial game 5 win, now going back home with a chance to seal the deal in this tough first round matchup.
If the Mavs can get even close to what they did here defensively, they will be in a great position for a game 6 win.
This is peak playoffs, and we are getting peak playoff drama, with Lebron shocking everyone, hinting that this may have been his last game as a Laker. You gotta check out this video right here. Talk to you in the next one. Peace out.

Most of the time Maxi is ready to pass not shoot. The Mavs need him to be ready to shoot at all times because once he tries to pass and noticed he’s wide open, he always bricks that dang shot. He needs to be more confident and he for sure was this game.

But you can’t be a good defender and be a bad teammate. You can’t have a bad attitude if you’re good on both ends of the floor. The crazy thing is that anyone can look at the numbers. Anyone can watch the games he plays and see that it’s all BS. Anyone can look up what his teammates actually say about him. Luka ended up with 34-7-10 in 39 minutes His season AVERAGE is 34-9-10 in 37.5 minutes This was Luka's best game of the series... and it was an AVERAGE game for him The Clippers are lucky they haven't seen Playoffs Luka this year, and STILL they're down I hope Luka closes out with a dominant performance. This was the most engaging game for him and he played better because of it. That’s why ppl shouldn’t just look at numbers. Kyrie started the half with 6 or 8 pts yet his defense was impactful. Same with Luka. Charles Barkley made a great point that Luka should trust his team more and it showed so much in this game how that really is the key. In this game I seen him pass the ball to kleber , watch the ball smack off the side of the backboard , and while up only 2 points , gave him the ball again for a knockdown 3. Hardly any complaining because he put his full effort into both sides of the court and his team rewarded his efforts. I’d rather a 25/6/6 guy whose playing to win , than a guy going for 50 just to lose. I.e Devin booker

@@dread.8110 I'm not saying there was anything WRONG with the game. Obviously, the Mavs won by 30. The Mavs had a good game. But Luka himself... shot splits of 53% fg, 25% from 3, and 5/5 from the free throw. Pretty ho-hum. What's weird is that this series, commentators have been saying Luka hasn't been showing up... when actually, he's been damn steady. He's had 1 kinda bad game, 1 slightly above average game, adn 3 slightly below average games. Here's the numbers of all 5 35-7-10 29-10-10 22-10-9 32-6-9 33-13-6 That's 1 off game in every statistical category. He also had 1 or 2 st/bl every game. He has been SUPER steady... and just below his season averages Season average 33.9/9.2/9.8 w 1.7 st/bl Playoffs average 30.2/9.2/8.8 w 1.2 st/bl His stats are good, obviously, but below HIS average. The most impressive thing about his stats this series though is how consistent they were. Win or lose, he was in the neighborhood of 30/9/9 EVERY GAME. Also, it seems there's no correlation between his stronger games and the team's wins. And I just can't get behind calling anything a "Luka Game" in which Luka doesn't score 40 or AT LEAST shoot 50%fg/40%3pt Luka hasn't shot 36% from 3 once this series and besides last night, his high for fg% is 42.3% (He's 48% from the field on the season). It's just reality. Luka has had a slightly subpar series, and has had nearly the same statline every night.

This why Steph plays off ball so much, with Harden being there best 3pt shooter and bringing up the ball it makes it hard for him to get open shots and Dallas just watches him

Kudos to the Mavs for playing tough defense and daring the role players to win it from the perimeter. Jason Kidd knows from 2011: being a contender requires really hard work on D. But I dislike the 2018 Rockets comparison. They were playing peak GSW to 7 games and because of CP's injury they basically had a 6 man rotation: they even tried injured Luc M'Bah a Moute (shoulder) and Joe Johnson (old) for a few minutes. The Rockets game plan relied on psycho swarming D and it worked when CP was healthy and then they were short handed. In game 6 they were just completely gassed and were shortarming everything toward the end of the game. Nothing like what happened with the Clippers, who simply had perimeter shooters who were not good enough but were not gassed. C'mon, leaving Russ open is a no-brainer and has nothing to do with playing a severely shortened roster.

Now, this is where I think analytics get it wrong! The 3pt shot in a stressful and hostile environment, with the game on the line, it’s much less efficient. All that talk of attempting lots of 3s instead of just having safe 2pt shots is proven wrong every year in the playoffs.

I don't think this is genius, it's just sensible. Good, but obvious. Happy to see them putting in the effort, though. That's the real key on defence. You're always giving up something when you need to help out on D, the key is to give up as little as possible, and that's done through hustling to catch up.
