The GENIUS Change Liverpool Made To Beat Arsenal

Спорт

Despite taking a battering in the first half, Liverpool eventually eliminated Arsenal 2-0 in the FA Cup 3rd Round. But while Mikel Arteta will rightly lament his side's poor finishing, it was actually an inspired tactical change from Jurgen Klopp that turned the tide in the second half.

There was a blatant handball that wasn't granted and Trent missed an easy goal, not only that, Arsenal had 1 really good chance besides their actual goal and they missed it. So from what I'm seeing had things counted that's a 3-2 for Liverpool under Arsenal's "control" assuming they gone and took their chances in the Anfield game, but I do agree Liverpool were lucky to not get battered in the first half in the FA cup game.

Klopp, unlike most managers today, has a talent for changing things up on the fly, especially when things are not going Liverpool's way. The amount of times Liverpool turned things around in the second half and with subs this season is nothing short of amazing. Most managers can't come up with new strategies on the fly like that

I feared the worst when Bradley and Clark came on. They have a collective total of 1 premier league appearance between them in their careers so far. So away at the Emirates I thought this would wake Arsenal up. Instead the opposite happened. If you include injury time those lads were on the pitch for around 19 or minutes. And Arsenal managed a grand total of one shot. Whereas Liverpool had about 5 including the goal. That period would be my biggest worry if I'm an Arsenal fan. And why did it take Arteta until the 88th minute to bring on Rowe and Trossard especially given how the 2nd half had been going. Props to Klopp for those substitutions because that was a ballsy move.

Martinelli was a planned attempt to get at Trent. Its something we've done to Liverpool in our last two meetings. Trossard and Rowe and Nketiah were desperation plays. Especially as Rowe essentially came on because when Havertz moved from CF to LM /CM for Nketiah he lost the ball like 5 times and misplaced passes that would have been key outlets from the pressure we were under. Say what you want about young players but I definitely immediately felt Martinelli would struggle after Conor Bradley. Not only more sound than Trent, but just as fresh as Martinelli, so yeah not too surprising to me. As an arsenal fan this was a game where a Trossard or Nketiah starts, as much as he instinctively but himself in great positions, Havertz played with no conviction. He was just disgusting to watch

a big game changer this season for liverpool is the fluidity, last season and even in seasons before that we had midfielders who were just midfielders and forwards who were just forwards. This game for example we had harvey and gakpo who have played in midfield and upfront so it was easy to tweak the system in game without arsenal realising fully for a couple minutes, then we have szoboszlai who has played in the wing aswell who adds to the unpredictability. Then on top of that there’s trent who u never know where he’s gonna be, he’s played in the number 10 position more or less at times this season and u can’t track that

to me the biggest difference is we have fresh legs in the midfield now that do a LOT of running, last year gini was gone but truth is his legs were almost gone, henderson while willing in spirit didn't have the legs to be running whole game long, he probably should had been a squad player to be used judiciously in games, Thiago never did ton of running for any of his teams and when he did, he would get injured, Milner should had been gone a year ago if not 2, Ox was always injured felt like it, Keita was injured half the time and the time he played, him on defense was something between soft butter and a traffic cone. Fabinho's game was never about running but about reading the game and being in good position. Add the fact that most of those players won everything with the club, they played maximum games the year before and I think it tired and drained those old legs, think most of the players were almost 30 or over 30. This year, Liverpool has a bunch of young, fresh, hungry legs with players eager to prove themselves and they don't have established roles, captains armband, large contract or large ego where they want to play in certain position or certain way, this gives Klopp flexibility to whatever he wants. Before we had front 3 with false 9, 2 box to box midfielders, single pivot destroyer, fullbacks that bomb forward and centrebacks that are great in the air and play high line and whoever came into the team from the bench, had to conform to the player he was replacing.

Similar to when klopp went to the 4-3-2 against Newcastle (and when he went 5-3 against spuds and had matip, vvd, and konate all in the box for a TAA cross 🤯) klopp has an incredible set of changes to throw at the opposition, even when Liverpool are being bested. If you watch the pep lindjers video about the Barca comeback he outlines klopp’s plan is always to not change the plan, but execute it better. I would say he doesn’t believe in ‘plan b’ but a plan A.1, A.2, etc. He has a plan at 10 men, 9 men, and he has variations on those plans going into every game, that he usually puts in at half time. If the Liverpool players can keep it close and make it to half time, klopp can make those little tweaks to put the onus back on the opposition to counter what he did. What this game proves, honestly, is that he even has variations off his own variations, when he leaves Trent in the middle, puts in Bradley, and just has him handle martinelli. It’s absolutely brilliant. And a brilliant vid mate! Thanks.

We have seen it a couple times this season where Klopp subs on Gomez for a midfielder, and suddenly both the Liverpool offense and defense are the stronger. Bradley is just a new variation, when Gomez is at LB. At first that sounds bonkers, doesn't it? But you can see how putting a faster/stronger RB can shore up an area the opposition likes to attack. And, of course, Trent roaming forward to support the attack can cause the opposition defense fits. (Obviously, there are possible counter tactics the opposition could make in the midfield...yet most managers cannot figure out how to make those changes on the fly, including Arteta.)

More midfield control. Mixed up the type of passes. Be unpredictable and in previous seasons...pundits and football channels kept saying rivals have figured out Liverpool. Tbh.....Hendo and Fab leaving....(Ox...Milie...Naby left on free)....just forced the midfield upgrade to happen all at once in the last transfer window.....and it paid off..because even when the 5 subs rule had kicked in last season....Klopp was hesitent to make those subs. I made a whole video on this on the Liverpool fan in Japan channel. The main reason Arsenal had the main success in the 1st half is because they played dual 10's in Odegaard and Havertz to pressure the 6 space. As soon as Klopp clocked on to it, he made the backline and first midfield line company enough and relied on Konate and Quansah reading the offensive transition. Klopp already knew if this game dragged on with arsenal not scoring and the crowd being on their back that Liverpools better squad and ability to find the 2nd gear in the latter part of the games would tell. Arsenal would love any of Liverpools offensive options like Jota, Gakpo, Nunez, Salah, Luis Diaz etc! Klopp also brilliiantly knows the quality of the youngsters seeing them in training day in and day out and an inverted full back like Gomez pockets Saka like Arbeloa did to Messi at times. Klopp’s in game management this season has been so fantastic. Last season people were saying he wasn’t a tactical coach cause his subs were predictable and always the same but just shows he didn’t have the legs or technical ability available and nor did he trust the options he had. That’s why you always knew what he was going to do. Europa has probably been a blessing in disguise for them because it’s allowed him to heavily rotate and keep everyone match sharp as well as everyone engaged knowing there’s a chance they’ll play a significant part in the season. They’re all hungry. And it also has allowed Klopp the chance to have a decent 17 or 18 options he knows can play a big game and fit right in instead of maybe 13 or 14. It’s made the difference this season.

Funny thing, Finnish tv-commentator said something like "Martinelli is now facing a challenge of completely different level" after Bradley made him null and void a couple times, he too saw Martinelli going past Trent maybe two times in a row. It´f also funny how top professional football players can be "right-footed" or "left-footed", despite being so good in general. This was also my case in my pathetic amateur level, but then I twisted my right ankle quite severely, and when it started healing I could jog with it, definately NOT kick with it, so all that time I maniacally kicked with my left foot, jogged to get the balls back and so on. One season crash course to left foot, and still today, I can kick with my left as badly as with my right foot!

The way he changed the team for the 2nd half was supposed to be the way to start the game. My opinion on that is that Klopp knew what he was doing by starting the way they started. 1st half was not about winning, was about controlling. I guess if Arsenal would score in teh 1st half Klopp would have changed right away. I think he didn't wanna get players tired with the game against Fulham in Wednesday. Klopp knew the long it went without a goal the more uneasy Arsenal would be. So it was about game management, not going full throttle from the beginning, wating for the right moment and then strike it. He has been brilliant this season doing this. Look at what he did against Newcastle away, Tottenham away, City away. He only missed that against United.

Good observation. Despite the insane amount of pressure on the CB's from min 0:00 to HT whistle, Klopp never changed tactics. Even after odegaard and saka had very lethal attempts off of the extremely high press he didn't change anything. It was then pretty obvious to me that Klopp was waiting to tire the Arsenal forwards out and committ to scoring in The 2nd half/ET The absence of key players and having kids stand in would mean that committing too hard to scoring early would eventually tire Liverpool first. Reduced level of team chemistry and reduced overall skill on the pitch means it would take a lot more in exchange to score. And Arsenal despite the loss, have a very intelligent and fast attacking game. Klopp's approach was risky but managed to take the sting out of Arsenal's offense and help build his own.

liverpool were outclassed first half they they never controlled anything they just fortunate arsenal didnt score it was 12 shots to 1, & the longer it went without a goal the more dangerous liverpool became. i dont think any managaer would put their team in that situation to be deliberately outclassed especially with world class players like saka and odegaard, liverpool just stuck in there and turned the tide once they realised arsenal cant finish their dinner props to them for that but no manager in the world could account for arsenal missing 3/4 clear chances

Klopp's always been good at things like this. They have a strategy to win the game and then several different tactics to implement the strategy. In the tile-winning season, a common one was to shift Henderson from the RCM position to be a wide RM bringing Salah from a RWN to an Inside Right. A tactical change but never an abandonment of their overall plan. This season you see Trent shift his RB several times, often playing a conventional RB role for 15 minute period just to shift the shape of the game - probe the right-side more directly, and then open up the middle

i love how the games between city, liverpool and arsenal have all been won by the one with the best tactics. It’s not like one of the 3 is clearly better than the other 2, i’d argue with their best 11’s they’re pretty close in ability so the team that ends up winning in these games have won the game tactically. This game for example arsenal outplayed liverpool for the first half completely but didn’t take their chances then liverpool played better in all for the second half

As a Liverpool fan of some 45 years, i will just add this to your otherwise spot on analysis. This team and this coaching staff use the first half, almost 100% of the time, to figure out the win. It is a tactic, an intentional tactic. If you watch Liverpool in the first 45 minutes of most games, they are measured, slow, analytical and they trust the back five to keep them in the game. On the sidelines, the coaching staff are watching, analysing how to set up for the second half in order to win. This is not an accident, not chance, this is what they do. It is brilliant, it is fun to watch and with a very high percentage of the time, it works.

That change proved to me what was obvious about Elliot for some time now. He is no winger. He shines when he's a part of the midfield, especially in that that right side AMF role. He's small, low center of gravity, has good awareness and first touch to receive a pass and turn around in possession and is not afraid to pass forward into dangerous area, something he's getting progressively better at doing. Secondly, Nunez is far more efficient trouble maker as a left winger than an out and out striker. Ironically, it's Jota that thrives more in that CF position, especially when he drops deep to collect like Bobby used to, except Jota carries the ball forward much more often and he does it very direct, very dangerous.

We're always quick to critisize, and rightfully so. Klopps assistant manager Pep Ljinders wrote a book at a stupid timing, last season was the price he payed aswell. But this season, whenever Klopp makes an adjustment, most of the times Ljinders is cought to give Klopp advice. They are a really good duo. Also alot of Liverpools players follow Ljinders idea: a player should be able to carry the ball very well. Gravenberch, who won posession and thus helped Liverpool score the 2nd goal vs Arsenal on sunday, fits this idea. Liverpools midfielders are all pretty good at progressing the ball via carrying. And coming back to the game vs Arsenal, Jota did a fantastic job at that too for the 2nd goal, and his entire game cause alot of issues to Saliba, who couldnt handle him.

Let's be honest Klopp has improved his in-game management with Liverpool 2.0. He used to make shocking substitutions with 1.0 that got us hammered, not lose the game but goals passed through. Now he's making subs that are winning us games. He really has improved himself in that area.

think a lot has to do with Arsenal burning themselves out first half, it was a huge effort to press that much that long. That was the main thing, they weren't gonna be able to keep it up. Same last season at Anfield when they actually got a 2 goal lead. They gassed out.

think they wanted to finish the game early, it was very aggressive & honestly they shouldve went in the break at LEAST 2-0 up comfortably, then maybe sat back and let liverpool come for 45 minutes, however not scoring cost them dearly against a great side like liverpool they can make you pay

I was leaping up and down for the kid Conner Bradley too because I was amazed at how he seemed to command his area like a 30 year old veteran. And for a Newcastle fan, you have the fortune of having the second best manager in the league imo. When Juergen retires, we’ll happily take Eddie Howe off your hands. Hes pretty special too. YNWA
