The Gap Between Boxing And Muay Thai - Boxpan vs Victor The Dragon

Спорт

Boxpan, our favorite boxer insists on only punches against Victor The Dragon, a Muay Thai and Kungfu hybrid kickboxer. I would say Victor's striking is 80% Muay Thai and 20% other styles, hence why I still call him Muay Thai primarily. With all this being said, we really see what happens when you kick a boxer because Max Pan is a semi-pro boxer, and Victor is a former pro mma fighter. These two represent their styles well, and we get a good case study in whether punching and footwork is enough to take on someone using eight limbs on you. Watch for an exciting exchange of styles and kickboxing vs boxing. Leave your comment and let us know what lessons you learned!

Exactly my thought. I understand showing some expertise in your specific martial art, but the reality is it's not remotely fair in several ways. He can get kicked, he can't kick him because he doesn't do it, he can get knee'd, he can't use knees because he doesn't do it, he can get spaced because of the kick range, he CAN'T hit his legs or lower body in any way, and he's not good enough to fight off a kickboxer. The only way you can do it, is to have a full on fight, and he can try to outtime him and get a knockout. But sparring? You're going to slowly watch him exploit every possible advantage he has, which is what we watched just now.

This was a very light contact technique focused spar. Even so it looked like by the end of the session the boxer was really feeling it in his legs. Because he's got noodle legs it would only have taken literally a few kicks to the leg and it would have been game over, no matter how clear your head is, when your leg stops working the fight is over

Victor is fun to watch. Would be interested in seeing more of him, especially the Baji techniques and concepts. Box Pan has to learn some form of kickboxing if he wants to compete against kickers. I think Boxers may find Savate to be an interesting art to combine, because it does tend to be more fencing-like and they do adopt a more bladed stance.

i do boxing but occasionally spar muay thai guys. When fighting guys with kicks, you must adapt a narrower stance. if not, you're gonna get low kicked very easily. The narrower stance makes your leg a farther target and gives you a better chance to evade the low kicks (or check them). It's definitely recommended to at least learn how to defend against kicks tho (ie. checking) which I've done. Maybe I'll post my boxing vs muay thai spars in my channel.

There actually was actually a time in the history of kickboxing where boxers transitioning to kickboxing did so well that they had to put a minimum number of kicks that you had to do in a match. What a lot of the boxers did was just get those kicks out of the way and then transition into pure boxing, smothering the kickboxer into the corner and box with them in the pocket, completely shutting down the kicks and taking over with their boxing. It was only when muay thai became popularized in the western world and leg kicks started being used in kickboxing that the boxers turned kickboxer started getting destroyed easily.

Someone would have figured him out. The closest person would probably be Mike Zambidis. Although he does use kicks too. It would be foolish to just punch and never kick, limits the points/damage that can win you the fight.

I find boxers who are primarily rangy amateur style fighters who work the jab and cross to have problems against kickboxers. Pressure fighters and brawlers who constantly crowd the kickboxers and deliver hard hooks and uppercuts are much harder to deal with. Fighting on the outside plays into a kickboxer’s game. But imagine a Tua, Tyson or Mugabi type fighter. A nightmare to deal with on the inside and most kickboxers don’t have to footwork, mobility and defense to deal with it, which only leaves them the clinch.

If you can be an expert while your opponent is a beginner in that one area, and control the fight there (which you probably can against a pressure fighter re: the clinch), you have a pretty powerful advantage. Because Muay Thai developed with Western Boxing as a component and frequent opponent for over a century now, it has already evolved to deal with many of the threats boxing has to offer and adopted many of its techniques, but that cross-pollination isn't bilateral. Still, fundamentally I agree with you. A sufficiently good boxer could surprise a competent Muay Thai fighter, but it'd be the exception as opposed to the norm. Yes, the boxer has a very traditional amateur cookie cutter style which shows he's not experienced fighting different styles of fighters with different guards, strengths, and weaknesses. In the beginning the boxer was the far superior fighter and could have ended the fight if it weren't just sparring, but was hesitating after every landed punch and staying in the pocket too long afterwards. Over time he absorbed too many leg kicks and allowed his opponent to make adjustments and learn his weaknesses. Once his legs started to weaken he no longer had the mobility to keep up the same level of offense and his defense was already non existent. This shows clearly that pure boxing at high level would completely dominate a skilled kickboxer provided the advantage of footwork and angles was utilized with enough aggression. But it also shows that front kicks, leg kicks, knees, and elbows, will dominate in any fight against a boxer that lasts more than one or two rounds. Make no mistakes, any pure boxer that doesn't have experience with fighting against kickboxing will be destroyed unless he manages to swarm the kickboxer with volume and power, getting in and out at angles and checking those leg kicks. You don't necessarily have to throw any kicks to beat a kicker, but you definitely need to have a lot of experience getting kicked.

I can't kick well but even the most minor appilcation of learning how would do wonders for this fight. The bottom line is if he doesn't want to kick he still needs to use his legs to his advantage. Everyone knows how to push someone away with your legs, you need that or else you'll never get anywhere near a kickboxer. Oh, and he's not a good enough boxer to showcase an excellent boxer vs kickboxer example. The idea being a boxer is so fast that a kickboxer can't get a single kick loaded, teeped or putting up a knee before getting knocked out from a superior boxing angle compared to kickboxing.

its not impossible to fight someone who has kicks without using kicks or elbows or knees, but you need strong advancing power to cut the kick off and even stronger punching power to do one of two things: 1. Cause pain 2. have enough stopping power to off balance the guy off his one leg Just eating them is a recipe for disaster man. Think he'll learn dirty boxing or clinching at least? Technically Shuai Jiao is standing boxing where you hit the opponent with the ground

boxer knew from the getgo that if the muay thai guy wasnt playing nice that it would’ve been real real bad for him. took him about 30 sec to realize that he’s locked in there at this guys mercy for another round. like in takeru vs superlek, once superlek found his range and tempo all takeru could do was take the punishment and with each hard blow he took to the legs or the body, takeru’s chances of landing that one big KO blow diminished. boxer was just gonna have to sit there and take it cuz he cant stop it.

The jabs for a leg kick is unrealistic because a normal leg kick will disrupt balance enough to make punching not possible. I'd think the Muay thai guy is getting annoyed because boxing guy is acting as if the kicks he eating do not move him at all, and boxing guy is "countering" very unrealistically. In a good sparring, a partner acts as if being kicked would be damaging and transfer enough momentum to move you. This is just highly unrealistic because thai guy is being nice by pulling everything but boxing guy is acting as if the kicks he's eating really are as soft as theyre being thrown. This is really a beginner mistake that coach will point out as bad sparring and bad sparring etiquette, but seeing as this is just for content, the muay thai guy is not in a position to "educate" boxing guy. Anyway, i think the horse has been beaten to a pulp by yours truly. In case its still clinging to life, boxing guy acts as if leg kicks are mosquito bites and if this was 50% sparring, he would take maximum 2 before he changes his stance and quits throwing long jabs for free

probably Boxpan hasn't ever been hit with a full force round kick to the leg, even the accumulation of lighter shots over those rounds was really mincing up his leg. A boxer probably goes his entire career never being hit in the leg even once, so he probably didn't have any way to know that his partner was being super restrained. Of course, it looked like Boxpan was throwing very lightly as well, I think this was a respectful spar considering the circumstances

A lot of people are saying Boxpan needs to train kickboxing/muay thai himself to stand a chance (and low key this would be the easiest route to victory probably). I think Boxpan potentially has the footwork to avoid getting kicked to shreds, but boxers aren't used to reading kicks so they don't have the wiring to move in on a kick or avoid them. Boxpan seems to rely a lot on his hand speed though so he can also move in on the kick and try to piece his opponent up close. In this footage I think he was trying to figure a way to do that, close the distance into boxing range so he doesn't have to worry about the kicks. His best bet if that's his route is probably to try and walk them down and press his opponent against the cage so they can't move back and keep peppering him with kicks.

  • @Zzz-tf5mw

    @Zzz-tf5mw

It's not just about kick or no kick. To avoid low kick, the boxer has to change his stance. The wide stance is opened to leg kick. And, to omit wide stance, the footwork won't be the same. There is also about leg conditioning too. They also kick in taekwondo but no low kick, only from the waist up that taekwondo fighter has wide stance too. They also just can't deal with low kick. Besides, close the distance can lead to him to clinching, thus kneeing. Muaythai fighter also have push kick to keep the distance.

Boxpan must be "your favorite boxer" because the dude can't fight. In my prime, I would run though these Muay Thai boxers as if they were tissue paper, because they simply didn't know what to do with fighters who came at them with lethal hands and who didn't just stand there while letting them load up to kick their legs. And Boxpan never heard of throwing flurries or dirty boxing? The dude is just sitting there letting this Muay Thai fighter OUTPUNCH him...Boxpan must be a sub novice, amateur boxer. A good boxer would have tour the Muay Thai boxer to pieces. I am not convinced that Muay Thai is better than boxing. I'll tell you what. Take your Muay Thai fighter and go up to Mayweather's gym and challenge some of Mayweather's fighters. If he can beat one of Mayweather's "good" boxers, maybe I will change my outlook. Yes, he can kick to the legs. Well, if you want to get nasty, boxers can punch to the groin. So, do you want to go that rout?

I do muay thay now but i did boxing for 4 years and i love boxing but muay thai just has more weapons. If you think it starts with a kick. Then you never learned muay thai and are talking out your @ss. 2nd,Western boxing has superior head movement, foot movement. Keep doing that front foot tapping like as if your from some legit thai boxing camp. Watch how quickly you get pushed. Lastly, to cut all this BS out of the way. Put an elite MT guy against Mike tyson in his prime. End of story. If any of you featherweight cherries start off with that "I'm gonna low kick him, bro" you never fought and need to stfu.
