Ойындар

The Dreamcast was really ahead of the time. The Dreamcast was the first console to come with internet access, it had better connectivity than the Game Cube and PS2, it was the first to bring DLCs, Online ranking, the first to bring crossplay, the first to have a real online service (Sega Net) and the first to have online-focused games such as Phantasy Star Online, Quake 3 Arena and Bomberman Online.
It's a bit weird that the PS2 is cited in the introduction as an online-supporting console, but the Dreamcast is only mentioned later in the video. IMO the PS2 was only marginally more online-supporting than the Gamecube. The Dreamcast and the Xbox were the two real "online systems" of the 128-bits era.
I can't believe we're 20 years later and much of Nintendo's online system is still so bad. The service stuff is ok, but actual multiplayer is basically unplayable as someone used to Xbox and PS. Not to mention the lack of stuff like voice chat or messaging. Hell, the other consoles have full Discord integration now on top of their already good first-party solutions.
Only Nintendo would go through the trouble of adding the add-on port for the adapter, make the adapter in two flavors, then not do a damn thing with it on their own (LAN aside). I used Warp Pipe a bunch back in the day. Wonderful little tool.

Yeah, pretty much the most Nintendo thing lol I wish I did try Warp Pipe myself back then. I still do wanna grab a broadband adapter to play PSO on private servers

Did warp pipe not lag back then?
@SI0AX
3 ай бұрын
@@funkytown01224They mentioned it lagged a little but they improved the net code. But lag depends on the service provider and how far away the connections are as well. If you want to play Air Ride from USA to Japan, it's gonna lag real bad.
Sidenote, PSO ep.3 was actually a pretty addicting little card game. It's definitely worth a shot if you can get your hands on a copy.

I wish I did try it and back then and not pass on it by simply being just another "card" rpg game

Was it still good in offline? I spent hundreds, if not thousands, of hours across the many versions of episode I and II while never setting foot online even once and never feeling like I was missing out on much, was ep III similar in that regard? I wanted to try it when it came out but I really disliked Baten Kaitos so I didn't want to risk getting burned by another card game.
I had a Wii before I found out Gamecube had online.

That's how bad of a job they indeed did with their online back then.

Did the online gamecube games work on wii?
@SI0AX
3 ай бұрын
@@RustTillDusk You need to host servers for that so absolutely 0 chance Nintendo would do it for the only 3 games they made have LAN capability, yet still never made it online, lol
This is a bit out there, but I remember that Rogue Squadron 3 had a really robust multiplayer system. Arguably more so than the singleplayer section. It's such a shame it didn't have an online component.
I'll never forget Miyamoto telling journalists that gamers have no interest in 16:9 widescreen, online gaming or HD graphics lol.
@TheObsessiveGamer

Yeahhh Miyamoto best stick as a game developer and no so much a business executive...and even then needs to stop pushing innovation for the sake of innovation sometimes (ie. Star Fox Zero)
I had an adapter that went from keyboard to Gamecube controller so I could type in chat on Phantasy Star Online. It was the old school PS/2 keyboard input port.
@TheObsessiveGamer

Hah figures someone would make that. Considering PS2 to GameCube controller existed especially
Y'know, it's funny. My step family was mostly hardcore Xbox gamers, so my stepdad actually tracked down the little addon for my gamecube, thinking that it _required_ online functionality in order to be played. And I totally forgot about it up until I was cleaning up my game area a few weeks back, then looked down and went "wtf why is there an ethernet port on my gamecube?" Always wondered if there was a storied history behind it, but this video makes it sound like my suspicions were correct that it was mostly an obligation Nintendo felt the need to follow.
I see your editing become better nice! 😂🎉
I've personally never enjoyed online gaming, so I've long considered the GameCube to be peak gaming, as Nintendo was solely focused on making great single-player games and living room multi-player games up until around 2005-2006. My favorite decade in gaming, in fact, is 1996 to 2006.
@TheObsessiveGamer

I mean I do enjoy online gaming to a degree so long as its more play in co-op and not so much in competition. However I agree with how GameCube had some serious peak. gaming to it

Agreed. Really don't like the mouse clicking sound.
Man imagine if melee had online!... It would be awful!
Nintendo should've incorporated online for SSBM to test the waters at the time.
Damn man. Awesome video 💥💥💥

Halo didn't have an online mode via xbox live in 2002, but aside from that, great video! sorry for the criticism!

Thanks and yeah I forgot Halo 1 didn't, but Halo 2 is when it actually went online
We Joke all the time that "Duh Nintendo can't do online" Technically they have been doing online since the famicom but In this era they didn't see It as a proven concept, were enough people's home equipped with Internet In 2001? I didn't get mine until about 2005 luckily by then Mario Kart DS and other Nintendo games were online enabled
Well said

Yeah sorry about that, we'll plan to dial it down a bit next time so they're not too distracting
Never gonna understand how they didn’t push the online on Gamecube when they have a long *ss history with online service since the NES, hell even Pokemon on the GBC had a online service 💀
@TheObsessiveGamer

A theory is that Nintendo felt scarred from how badly the 64DD and GB online went down so they were being extra cautious (even though the 64DD's problems were entirely their own) and so it led to this

Very interesting video, but you seemed to skip right over Sega Channel and X-Band. Not a complaint, just using the excuse to comment for the algorithm.
@TheObsessiveGamer
Жыл бұрын
Thank you lol and yeah I skipped over those simply cause it was a GameCube focused video.
I find it so ironic how Nintendo's marketing wanted to show how the GameCube would be different and original from the competition... by copying Michael Eisner and the Disney Difference marketing done just the decade prior, haha.
@TheObsessiveGamer

Hah so that's where they took that tagline from. Well shows why the Cube failed in the end
@BlazeHeartPanther

Well, better to take from Eisner anyway. His "successor" Bob would just buy shit to raise profits XP rather then make new shit XD
Nintendo has never had a great online service that's on par with SEN (PSN at the time) or Xbox/PC Game Pass (Xbox Live at the time) and even now with the Nintendo Switch you need to use the Nintendo Switch Online phone app to communicate with other people online on games like Mario Kart or Splatoon or hell even Super Smash Bros. On the Nintendo Wii U you couldn't even talk to people online in Smash 4 except in the character select screen. Another thing is Microsoft and Sony use both WiFi and LAN connections and Nintendo has always been WiFi only since the Nintendo DS. I mean yes they also sold LAN adapters separately and for the Nintendo Wii and DS they had the Nintendo Wi-fi USB connector for people who didn't have a wireless router. I never had the Nintendo GameCube modem and I didn't have Internet service at home so I didn't need it. I did play Phantasy Star Online though. On the Sega Dreamcast I mean.
What is Warp Pipe! Isn't it supposed to be xlink now

it's possible nowadays on emulator. With little to no lag. Just google "melee slippi". You'll find instructions to setup everything. Though you'll need a Melee ROM and a controller + adapter. There's even ranked mode, and matchmaking.

In the end it was really the local co-op GOAT. There were 4 mario party games, and no motion controls! And one had a microphone GC controller

Honestly for couch multiplayer in general is was truly the king and likely the last console to truly excel at it.
Not supporting online for the GameCube was a great miss opportunity on Nintendo's part. 🙃🙃🙃

Much appreciate the support there! :D and I agree. Along with the disc size and lack of a DVD player, this was the other big mistake they made that generation
Dreamcast has no name😢
But, Dreamcast online services?

Yeah i'll take couch multiplayer any day over online. Nothing beats sitting next to friends and gaming.
They didnt do shit! Sure wii online is cool but i wanna see that primitive tech the dd had better online features … and cool art
Because I did played it, Four Swords Adventure requires the GBA connectivity only for multiplayer. If you're playing alone, you can use a regular Gamecube controller instead.
