Hearing you talk about how some Japanese brands are literally only one or two people is really special. I wonder if you could highlight them by making an interview video with them? Maybe make it into a series, or combine them together for a big special episode 🤔

Man you guys are some of the only guys who'll actually talk about this stuff without the fake "positivity" about everything. The industry is straight messed up right now and people dont get how many layers there are to it. I just saw an interview with mush mouth jacob wheeler taking credit for the do live beaver knock off, and all the comments are just showering his phoney behind with praise and co signing knock offs. It made me sick. Thanks for being genuine human beings fellas.

I have bought two baits from a flipper because I couldn't get it from the original maker and the flip price wasn't exhorbitant compared to the MSRP but I don't get buying something and not fishing it and the amount of work compared to the profit margin makes flipping seem like a waste of time as a stand alone enterprise. I'm really enjoying the podcasts. I like going down rabbit holes and you offer a lot of insight into the fishing industry.

Tackle piracy, guitars, skateboards, parental expertise via Ben. Flippers suck ass, yes to find out that you could get double on it but the garage makers cant produce the amount of a large company that has its own factory so supply and demand is higher on garage makers. Flippers are the reason why I cant get an already hard to get bait. Best podcast so far.

So on the flipping....here is a recent example.....been waiting months to get grass pieces to fish AAA tournaments series this season. Missed the drop by a couple hours (my problem) but by that night they are Ebay. I pay double for wrong size, wrong color. During this podcast you spoke of taking care of your customers in the case of lost or broken items ect. How about putting practices in place to mitigate or limit flipping? I wonder how much a small Japanese lure maker whould benefit from his lure getting the promotional value of a national level win?

Man, there’s so much relatable content in this discussion. You pretty much covered all of social media since mid-2022, and this industry as a whole has gone off the rails. The flipper game is out of control, especially in big swimbaits, and I feel like there’s so many that hate it, but there’s nothing that can stop it. The knock-offs need to stop, but greed and money seem to take precedence over morals and values. What Ben said about personal thresholds is 1000% accurate. To add to that, hype, flippers, inflation, and everything related to those are forcing a lot of people to increase their thresholds because they want to play the game and have nice gear, boats, electronics, etc.. all in all, thank you for putting this out there, and I hope as many people as possible really listen to it, even if they have different perspectives. It truly is a sad industry these days, and we can only hope it will improve in the future rather than getting worse.

Hey Ben and Geoff excellent listen! I sit in my room with a beer after work and tie on new leaders and baits and listen to all your guys knowledge and opinions. Thanks for doing it and being real !im pretty new to listening only about 2 months but I still scored on some o.s.p. cranks on Black Friday! (my first experience with you guys and it was great ! I love supporting the mom and pop shops so you gotta customer for life with me Ben! haha..,.sorry for the rant. Anyway I've been working on my swimbait for 8 years now and Im so close to getting this thing out but I make everything in molds and my pieces are so tricky to pour the mold and have it fill completely in. Ive got it pretty wired now as far as little tricks when making the molds but the whole process is so brain racking to reverse engineer everything. It wouldn't be so hard if I had auto cad or knew some one that could 3d scan and then upload and tweek it to perfection on the computer...but Im all clay and molds and like you guys said earlier in the show..this thing won't be out of my possession till its reached its point of perfection that I feel won't have Geoff talking sh!t about my bait!!😁 I feel like I resonate with you guys and the Japanese mindset with the attention to detail.. can't wait to drive out from San Diego and see my new favorite store in the whole wide world! Glad you and the fam made it back safe from Japan Ben! -deryk

I am fairly new to the JDM tackle game, but it is honestly something that I’ve chased my entire life. Growing up using hand poured and hand tied jigs and swim jigs, has really shaped my perspective. This is why my support for JDM baits is an easy conversation. The price will always be there, but being passionate about the way something is made or way it is originated makes it that much more special when I catch that fish. Not only does the bait have a story, but now I have a story to take pride in. I love being able to take pride in the tackle and equipment that I use.

Outstanding. I'm a rabid concert goer and it kills me when some bot/person grabs 10 tickets with no intention of going to the show - thankfully some of the artists are cracking down on this (ie, only allowed to re-sell at original price thru original website) - not sure something like this is possible to do with Geoff's beloved guilded swimbaits. I watched your interview with Nishine and also an interview done by @BassFishingArchives with Nishine - and I am going to save my shillings and look to purchase lures from him in the future (what a compelling life story he has). Keep up the great work and continue operating in an ethical manner. Support the smaller/independent bait/lure makers !

I enjoyed your video, the two big problems I have is availability of baits to support the original manufacturer. The other is the resale market, people buying small business lures to flip for a big profit. It took me 2 years to buy a KGB Chad shad from KGB directly. I had better luck with Working Class Zero citizens. But still a grind.

I've been designing a glidebait of my own for over a year, and I would definitely want my lure to get into the hands of people that will fish it. But like you guys said, it must catch fish. Fishability, catchability, and durability to me, will always make a lure worth the price if it has that 'it' factor and just gets bit. Hoping one day this year Ill be confident my glide will touch all of those bases.

I really like the licensing idea. That could give anglers access to the best ideas and reward the innovators. It’s a super interesting conversation digging into the difference between a knock off and an innovation or a new take. Lucky Craft lipless baits aren’t knock off Rattle Traps, they’re a refinement in a lure category.

Awesome podcast gentlemen, especially talking about the flipping industry! The one thing that is really ridiculous is how the majority of the popular swimbait/glidebait makers don't care at all about their customers instead just the almighty dollar! If you don't get in on a drop or traval half way across the United States for a show then your screwed.... They are only a handful of swimbait/glidebait makers that take pre-orders, thos are the true makers that care about their customers!

  • @kevinatwell9781
    @kevinatwell97815 ай бұрын

I really enjoyed this! So I made it all the way through and the flipper discussion part is very interesting...I don't particularly care for that BUT at least the lures go to the ones who are all in whether they are collecting or fishing - also it makes those lures (which are actually border line works of art) more rare so they aren't saturating the lakes with them, so they actually maintain their fishing value longer. I much more dislike knock offs, as they imitate art, and allow many more people who ordinarily wouldn't even think of using that lure access to a tool which then educates more bass - there by killing the usefulness of the lure entirely. The one saving grace of originals vs. knock offs is that almost every time knockoffs for the sheer sake of $ sacrifice quality and therefore, fish catching ability. Attention to detail is what makes great baits great, IMO. Keep up the great work, thanks!

Love the vids. You are talking about the difference between art and business. The stark reality is that artists usually die broke. For the realist it is important to balance perfection, value, etc. be careful not to dream yourself into being broke. High costs have a point of diminishing returns. Lots of folks are broke at my age because they bought the best damn sound system in the 70-80s. So what’s the best megabass for Ned’s 😊 Keep the vids coming!!!!

I hate flipper and scalpers. To profit off someone else’s work sucks. Especially since sometimes those people are not in the industry or enjoy the actual reason behind the items. They are simply there for profit and nothing else. Like you mentioned the concert tickets. Same thing happens in video games, collectibles like Pokemon, etc.. some kid misses out on something they enjoy cause another adult wants to make a profit. Sad to see. Great podcast as always guys. Good discussion and topics. 🤘

Long live the garage builder!!! Fishing’s in my blood. Bass and catfish. Been able to fish several times a year my whole life but not every day or week like I’d like to. Newest hobby is swimbait fishing thanks to Geoff. This episode was great! Knock off’s………….I feel knock off’s are completely unacceptable. Change my idea by 10% and now it’s legally yours. Not how it should work, but this is America. There will always be more fair weather fisherman to buy cheap tackle than serious anglers who invest heavily in quality equipment. It’s about morals and money, and some people forget about morals if they are following the law. Pricing…………….Innovation and technology will never slow down. Inflation doesn’t either. Supply and demand. I’ve perfected buying lightly used items at a fraction of the original price. There’s always a rich guy getting into a hobby that he soon looses interest in. And here I come to buy his collection because his wife said sell it and could care less what he paid. This is America. There’s always another way. Flippers………….My experience with flipping is in the pocket knife world. $500 lure? We’ve got $500 pocket knives. And higher just like with lures. I highly doubt the maker of any item cares what happens after he’s made his money. If the hinkle trout guy cared, he’d put the bait in your hands Geoff. Maybe one day he will hand deliver you one. He’s most likely just as proud of someone putting it on their shelf for a collection piece as art, as he is of someone willing to buy his lure for over double retail. If you have you personal info and card on your phone to instantly come up at online checkout, you can’t miss a drop. With today’s technology you can check out in 30 seconds. I do this and don’t miss drops. Geoff, if you don’t wanna pay $500, don’t. You even said you offered guys $500 before without negotiating. Don’t complain if you miss a drop. It’s just a lure 🤣🤣🤣 jkjk But it does sounds like you’ve never had to take your change to the coin star. When a knife drops and I don’t have the funds, I’m absolutely not buying for double the price down the road. However, just getting into swimbait fishing because of Geoff’s videos, I probably would pay a flipper price for a bait. That just tells me where my heart is between the two hobbies. Don’t hate the flipper, hate the game. You’re literally a part of the flipper circle Geoff. Don’t like flippers? Buy it on the drop or not at all. It’s not fair cause you missed it? It’s only a lure, and this is America. Flipping has been around since before the first tickle me Elmo prolly 30 years ago. It’s just part of the industry whether it’s a big company or mom and pop doing an exclusive item or limited run item. Geoff, I’d say find another hobby or master some finesse fishing before getting burned out on the whole thing. Do you take fishing too seriously? Don’t let the mental game ruin fishing for you in the long run. I keep sayin America when Geoff want to move to Japan for fishing 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Have several more legitimate reasons than that if you really go brother 👍👍👍👍

I think Ben has a point here. If there wouldn't be that many anglers willing to pay 500bucks for that lure, we would see high stocks of that bait lying around. Eventually over time, when none of them get sold, they'll become cheaper. But the reality is, that as soon as these baits hit the market they get sold. So there are two Options: 1 - either the majority of fishermen are just to wealthy 2 - we are underestimating the emotional value that "fishing this specific bait" has for a lot of fishermen, so that they are willing to pay that ridiculous amount of money. Either way as long as none of those changes, flippers will make money.

As I’m a few minutes in I hear that MJ song, Gonna be starting something! 😂 As a maker the challenge is coming up w something new or major changes to a bait. But to directly copy a bait is just bad juju! That ICast has awarded copy after copy the last few years just shows how much greed is destroying our society!! Doing things bc they are right and refusing to compromise is a dying art. Politicians are literally bought and paid for, companies are driven by corporate greed, and it is just sad! I think we are seeing uptick in the garage maker market bc most of the makers are holding to a desire to do things right. I appreciate you bringing in some Of the garage makers Rafa, KGB, and others. I could not agree with you more on the knock off pandemic, but I will say that I can think of quite a few baits that JDM manufactures copied in the past. I never liked knock offs of any kind, but the JDM knock offs of baits were hard to complain about because they took the bait and made it so much better. I try my best to buy the original if at all possible, no matter who makes it unless it’s junk and the knock off is far superior. At this point, almost every company has the same bait lineup. The absolute worst offender is not even Berkley…… BPS has been knocking off for so long that their catalog is full of XPS junk. That catalog used to be right behind the Bible for important books in my house, now it goes straight to the can.

When I first got into swimbaits I fished the Deps 250 and the poppa Pete for a year without success. I finally gave in and bought a hinkle shad on eBay knowing if I made such an extreme purchase I would then force myself to only fish it until I caught something. The first day within 10mins I caught a 6.5 an hour later I caught a 7. After that it’s been a downward spiral. Then I bought 3 back ups in different patterns. Long story long yeah it sucks paying 2x-3x the original price but I’d rather do that than get on a 2-3year waiting list

Flippers come in many forms. A lot of collectors flip to fuel the collecting. They instantly spend the profit of the flip on more collecting and the obsession. Sometimes its just a way to flip the old into the new or into something else of intrest recently discovered or a strategic move out of economic necessity just to be able to aford collecting.

Ben, Geoff I love you guys I really do. The Hook Up is one of my favorite places upset the wife with. I wholeheartedly agree with you guys about rip offs. I have a few other hobbies where the blatant theft of someone IP is one of the greatest sins, so I was pretty surprised to see how accepted it was in this industry. That being said I do want to push back a little. When you guys are talking about the DoLive Beaver being ripped off by Rapala around 40 min mark you allude to the price difference being because the material used. I feel that is a little misleading, if you look on some Japanese online tackle shops the Beaver and Rapala baits are around the same price. I am a little skeptical that OSP (my fav lure manufacturer) somehow is using super premium plastisol. It seems far more likely the difference in cost is because the lures must be imported. I don't doubt for a second that you OSP, Megabass, Deps, etc isn't higher quality than Berkley or Strike King or whatever but to pretend that most of that price difference isn't because of where the bait is manufactured seems a little disingenuous. All that being said I will still gladly pay to convivence fee to get the lures here in the states.

Flippers happen in every industry that has exclusive items. eBay started that trend a very long time ago. I have seen makers raise their prices based on what their flipped bait is getting. There are lists of flippers I’m aware of and many makers won’t sell to them or refund their $ and block them. No idea what is right but they will always be around. I don’t understand how someone buys a bait and won’t use it!!! That drives me crazy😂😂

Flippers can get wrecked. The point being made that bait makers would be happy about their baits being sold for 2 to 3 times more than they sold it for is insane. That's money not going into their pocket. Bait makers want their baits fished. Flippers kill the market. Taking baits out of the market especially if they are over priced. I agree with Jeff 💯.

I choose to do without verses paying over inflated flipper prices. Remember it is a free market and the consumer has the power of choice. Also a bait makers has the right to refuse service if the know the buyer a notorious flipper. Like Ben said it probably pains them to see it happened but like the demand the flipper generates. In the end they sold the bait for exactly how much they wanted. It is up to the buyer to determine how bad and much they are willing to pay.

Also I made it to the end and I don’t mind flipping. Everything in every store is bought in the mind to be sold to make money and for Geoff a flipper is probably the reason he got his hinkle trout was because some guy wanted to flip it your basically paying someone to source this more for you. It’s a lot like the people who flip shoes and jewelry they find it first and the end price is how much it means to the buyer if I buy something to flip but I find out nobody even wants to pay the original asking price then that’s because there is no demand but if I buy a nice bait and some guy at the ramp sees it and offers me twice the original price because he loves the color then I’m going to go and buy some more of those color if I can and hit that guy up to sell him as many as I can lol

I think you hit on why many anglers are so against livescope. Costs for the system are through the roof vs a standard side scan. Many have less in their pockets due to inflation. People’s pay increases aren’t matching inflation. I also think brands have been knocking off for a long time . Rattle traps , keitech swimbaits or Senko’s are a good ones to look at. All most every brand has those. I prefer to support the original unless they are lacking a color or something I can’t get. The small companies have to take out patents and enforce them or nothing will change. I have to be honest I did buy the Rapala Osp beaver knock off in black and blue because OSP doesn’t make it and it’s a color I use regularly. Can’t believe OSP doesn’t have that or 4 inch in Junebug regularly in stock. I won’t buy a flipped bait. Don’t need any bait that bad. Lures are just a tool and there are plenty of hammers out there. I thought lululemon was a little girls store. Lol!

I just had what could be a great idea, or a completely terrible idea. Do apple air tag's or whatever those trackers are called survive in water? What if you managed to put one in a hinkle somehow, so if it snapped off, you had a good chance at finding it? Maybe with a magnet to catch the hooks, or something? Might be worth looking into, haha. Dremel a little spot and fill it in maybe. I know that's sketchy for such an expensive bait, but I'm just thinking out loud here.

FLIPPERS- I don’t like the flippers that race the fishermen to a product. I don’t mind the flippers that go store to store, or garage sales and find a deal on a bait to flip. I guess the race aspect is what gets me the most frustrated. If you buy something after plenty of the fishermen had a chance to buy, then go right ahead.
