The Gambling Scandal The NHL Doesn't Want You Knowing About....

Спорт

It's no secret that gambling and sports has also led to numerous scandals, shaking the foundations of beloved games. Take, for instance, the recent turmoil in baseball, Shohei Ohtani is hailed by many as one of the greatest players of all time, but right now he is embroiled in controversy over alleged involvement in illegal gambling rings. And this wasn’t the first time we’ve seen gambling tarnish the reputation of a baseball great Moreover, the saga of Pete Rose, the greatest hitter in baseball history, serves as a stark reminder of the repercussions of gambling involvement. Despite Rose's lifetime ban for betting on baseball games throughout his career, his exclusion from the Hall of Fame remains a contentious issue, highlighting the complexities of the relationship between sports and gambling. Baseball isn't the only sport tainted by such gambling scandals; as recent as this year we saw shane pinto get suspended for the first half of the season as a result of gambling.
But what if i told you almost 20 years ago the nhl had one of its biggest gambling scandals, and that the nhl has done everything in its power to erase all traces of it, and would like it to appear as if this scandal doesn’t exists Let's rewind to 2005 and delve into a crazy story that the NHL would prefer to keep under wraps. #nhl #waynegretzky #hockey #arizonacoyotes #vancouvercanucks

Don't get me wrong, I love hockey, but the NHL is corrupt to its core. Always has been. I don't mind legal gambling but I hate the constant advertising for it and citing odds instead of teams records when showing scores and schedules. And then there's the way NHL "manages' its games through subtly messing with the refereeing. That needs to be talked about more.

@dannycarlow8204 Well no of course it makes sense. You're claiming the NHL fixes games, which would imply they're doing what's best for the owner's pockets. Arizona being a big market would make the NHL more money then say Winnipeg or Edmonton being good. So why would the NHL not try and rig Coyotes games? Because they aren't rigging the games at all my dude.

@@HarryRiceHockey If you read my reply to you properly you would see that I don't believe they fix games, the original comment was a joke. If they did, the Coyotes would be the last team they would do it for because the NHL used to foot the bill for the franchise. How would that look if the team that the league was supplementing all of a sudden started to get really good? Everyone would actually have a reason to believe the league fixes games if the Coyotes suddenly started to succeed. People would be furious and I wouldn't blame them for thinking the fix was in. Like I said, any other team would make some kind of sense, just not that team.

Well, am I ever glad you brought this up. I remember it well and the silence was deafening. Gretzky's career was bought and paid for to create hype and open the NHL to a takeover by the gambling lords. I watched the Oilers lose to Gordie Howe's Whalers, and Gordie was the GOAT, not the Whiner. I saw them in Edmonton with season tickets and Howe did things at the age of 50 that Wayne was never big enough or smart enough to attempt. He cried on camera when they traded him to LA, where his actress wife lived, as if he had no control over the trade. As if. His wife taught them how to do pratfalls and the Kings got so good at it, the league had to make it a penalty for taking a dive. And if a player tried to check Gretzky it was an interference call. The hype in America over the great one going to LA led to the demise of the Canadian teams in the WHL and an explosion of teams in the states that played to empty arenas unless they made the playoffs. That's why Canadian teams don't make the playoffs. Canadians fill the stands all season long, no matter how bad their team is playing. American teams needed the playoffs to break even. I hadn't watched hockey in a decade when Calgary built a franchise winning team in 2004 that swept through the playoffs against all odds and the complete disdain of the media. Officiating was so obviously anti Calgary that the coach, Darryl Sutter, explained it by saying, "We're not supposed to be here." And when Martin Gelinas scored another elimination goal against Tampa Bay to win the Stanley Cup in Game six, it was disallowed because only ONE camera could see the goal. WHAT!!!?? I didn't watch game seven, which Tampa won, (surprise, surprise) and I haven't watched any sport since except the CFL. It seemed to me that they cancelled the next season just to destroy that powerful Calgary Flames team. Professional sports isn't about entertainment, it's about billions of dollars and controlling who gets the money. I thought it was weird they were so hard on Pete Rose. He never bet against himself. He never threw a game, he was betting he would win. When Gretzky and Janet just slipped out the back door, I realized Pete Rose's crime was that he wasn't betting through the their syndicate. He was a scapegoat to throw the scent off of an empire of deceit that turned fans into saps.

You got the money part right. I was born in Edmonton and haven't watched a complete game in 20+ years. The original KC Chiefs franchise cost $25k. Now ask yourself why Quebec City has a new arena but isn't in the league but Seattle coughs up $650 million and is made to feel right at home. And Vegas? Those golden helmets and those uniforms remind me of the California Golden Seals. Make it a game again, not a capital venture enterprise.

Okay aside from the pure moronic nature of this comment: 1) The goal against the Lightning was clearly no-goal. During Game 7 they showed a CGI recreation to show how that one camera could pick up how the goal looked like it, while every other camera showed no goal. As Gary Thorne I believe it was put it, "You need to know it's a goal, not think it's a goal." 2) Canadian teams don't make the playoffs because of gambling or American teams, it's because some of them have been legit terrible. You wouldn't blame the 2010 Leafs on missing the playoffs because of the American teams, because they had a godawful record. Kind of funny how you refuse to point out Buffalo having the current longest playoff drought, or the Coyotes making the playoffs once in the last decade because that didn't fit your narrative lol. 3) Going back to the Tampa/Calgary thing, aside from the fact the Flames did not build a Cup winning team they were merely a very lucky team, how would you blame the Gretzky missed high-stick? Oh wait you must have forgotten that the Leafs got destroyed in Game 7 because Gretzky was that damn good. And you also seemed to forget that the Marty McSorley illegal stick that cost the Kings the Cup that year. Would you blame the Oilers blowing a 3-0 lead to the Ducks in 2017 on the American team needing to go further? My bet would be probably not. 4) You might want to start watching Hockey again my brother, the game is no longer the caveman game of big hit 2-1 finishes that it was in the dead puck era, now the game focuses on actual skill and speed! You know, real hockey!!

As an addictions counsellor, I predict the ubiquitness of sports gambling will cause addiction to gambling to sky-rocket, People's lives will be destroyed, marriages will end, bankruptcies will increase, relationships will end, suicide will increase, and family harmony and discord will result. This of course will not apply to all gamblers, but to such a significant amount of the gambling community this will be a social catastrophe. People like Gary Bettman, Roger Goodall, Adam Silver, and Don Garber must clearly enforce real punishment for sports gambling and not just slaps on the wrist. Why Rick Tochet is allowed to be the coach of the Vancouver Canucks is unfathomable. Wayne Gretsky and others like him need to look themmselvesf in the mirror and man up.

It's not healthy and people are losing their entire fortunes trying to win "the big one," but gambling is pervasive in every aspect of society, from sports to movie spoilers to placing bets on what colour dress Taylor Swift will wear at her next public appearance. We know people are gambling and will continue to gamble, and it's a highly profitable industry for corporations for whom gambling is permitted. All these gambling "scandals" are the result of attempts to police behavior by people who are going to find a way to place a bet by any means necessary. Finally....someone with the backbone to report this stuff. Ads in the NHL has left me not watching any games any more. So much of the Ads are promoting gambling and how many lives have been ruined because of it. Greed is running it, not so much the gamblers but the big companies running the Ads in all NHL broadcasts. Greedy people, but their off the hook by putting sub note. "gamble responsibly". give me a break. Greed.... Good job sir..keep digging.

Janet Gretzky suing for "loss of career" opportunities? What career would that be Janet, how to be a *gold digger* ? I get that Wayne was underpaid compared to today's athletes hence the gambling adds but Bettman just can't make this disappear. Let's not forget the *Mike Danton/Katie Wolfmeyer* "hit-man" fiasco. It stopped being a sport for me years ago.

Perhaps letting someone who was an excellent hockey player return as a head coach in the NHL a decade after this mess is a dog whistle to gambling groups that its open season for grifters to get away with the graft. Raptors coach Darko Rajakovic called it out in the NBA but when you consider how long Alan Eagleson ruled the world of NHL sports agents and how long Bruce McNall got away with a shell game in LA it shouldn’t be a surprise that the stench is so pervasive. Jared to watch a game now without the pervasive gambling ads superseding the content.

If NHL players had been implicated in fixing the games directly, that would be a massive blow, and it would have surprised me to hear it. There appears to no one specifically making this claim. Correct me if I am wrong but it sounded to me like Tocchet helped his buddy finance his private sports betting hustle. The report here made no mention of seizing his illegal earnings of a silent partner. One thing that did not surprise was to learn that gambling sites are used substantially by current and former NHL players. All sorts of players have had mild to serious gambling addictions. A recent notable example would be Evander Kane. Pro athletes in general are known for this behaviour, and it kind of makes sense that some parties would find a way to tap into that market via insiders with the right network of friends and associates. As others have pointed out, professional sports have certainly not been particularly opposed to sports gambling operations and have gladly taken the money from the industry in sponsorship deals. One should be looking at the league owners on that front more than the players.
