I have to say you're simply the best game tutor ever, in addition I have to say that watching your videos made me enter the awesome "world" of boardgames ( I started when I first saw the Wrath of Ashardalon videos in 2012). I've been eyeing The Gallerist for a while, and after watching a bit of your gameplay, I came here and watched this info. Seems very complex, but I love it to bits already. Great job (as always) Rodney. It was particularly interesting as I'd been following the periscope sessions on "Shooting The Gallerist" so it was nice to see how the final product ended up. Also handy as I'm hoping to play this again in a few days and whilst two of us have played before, by sending the new-to-the-game players the link to this video, it will save me having to explain the game again - a little bit selfish, but also means an extra 30 mins or so of gaming so yay!! :) . Many thanks mate and, as always, thanks for letting me watch!

    Played this for the first time last night after watching your video. I will say this video helped with many things like setup and rules but it didn't really make you understand at all at how the game played. Granted this game is very involved and is probably the heaviest game I own, i just feel like the only thing this video COULD use is a small area telling you how the general flow of the game like how you Discover/ buy art -> getting contracts and selling art -> to manipulate attendees and hire assistants along with increasing fame of artists and getting into international markets. Overall though, thanks Rodney and the rest of the Watch It Played crew, your videos are a huge asset to gamers. I was shocked and relieved this video came up when i searched for a how to play!

    Again a great video, helped a lot! I would add that you could also activate a bonus tile from a new artist after flipping over. The rule book and the player aid are inconsistent in this point out of all reason. The artist bonus tile which lets you improve an artist's fame can be used for the just flipped artist. That's the only tile where the order matters I think, but it could be important.

    Great video, man you did great on this how to play, i love this boardgame, one of my favorite (if not my favorite!), it's heavy and strategically, it's not for everyone. Luckily i have many friends who like heavy games, so i never played with less than 4 players (full table). Maybe someday i try with less people to know how this affect. Surely the best how to play "the gallerist" that i ever seem. The bad thing is that i'm brazillian so it's hard to recommend to my friends who have trouble to understand english.

    Holy heaping hammerfists.. that's a lot of explanation and a billion components. Yikes! My friend was very excited (he's the group meeting head honcho) just bought this game yesterday and he's very excited to bring it to our game table. I'm honestly very curious about our first playthrough, and hopefully the game's pace is not more than 2 hours. I'll be studying your video a few more times so that I can get an understanding of the rules, and such. Thanks!!

    +Steve Pruneau I played this game for the first time back in February. It was a 4P game and with the rules explanation + set up and play time, it came to 2hrs (cleaning up the game pushed it over 2hrs). The person that taught it was great at explaining the rules/game play so I'm sure that made a huge difference. I've since played the solo variant and a 2P game. The 2P game was close to 2hrs as well. We'd not played it for about a month so we were double checking on rules a few times. Love this game. :)

    Wow. As others have stated, there are a ton of moving parts here for what on the surface doesn't seem like the weight of the game matches the title of the game. That being said I was very impressed on how much you packed in to this video in a logical and straight forward manner. This in turn really had me thinking more about you and video creation. If you don't mind, can you indulge me in a few questions? 1) In a game like this, how do YOU learn this? Strictly by reading the rules? Designer help? Demo play at a con? 2) How do plan for a video like this? How much time or how many dry runs/scripts/planning goes into this to show all these intricacies? 3) How many times did you play this where you felt comfortable in your personal understanding of the game to prepare for this video? This game is on my wishlist, but after watching this (and it does seem awesome), I'm now a little gun shy to acquire only because I think my small gaming group would possibly be over whelmed by this, and I can't see myself teaching this to 2-3 others in a sitting or two (knowing their attention spans). I'd have to resign myself to the fact I'd probably be playing solo most of the time, and thus missing out the more social aspects of this. Again, looks like a great game, but very complex for the casual gamer group.

    +jayson olson Hey Jayson, during the recording of this series, I actually recorded several live Periscopes where I went through the process of creating these videos. They would have answered your questions for sure :) I'll give you the very short hand answers here (there are longer answers, but it would take too long to type it all out). 1) Reading the rules. Checking for FAQ's. Asking questions. 2) For this video, read the rules and played the game 3 times. 7 hours to script and polish script. 13+ hours to record it. 3-4 hours to edit it. 1 hour of reshoots to clean it up. 3) After the first play I felt comfortable. The extra plays cemented things. The included play aid is very helpful.

  • @WatchItPlayed

    @WatchItPlayed

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Jarb2104 Kind of funny, because in this case, I decided after the fact to do a solo rules video for this one :) Mainly I don't do it because I find those rules are usually added as an "alternative" way to play, and with so many games I want to cover on the channel, and with each video taking so long to create, this is an area where I don't mind leaving it to the viewer to learn, if it's something they want to explore. Most publishers make their rule books available online for free, so it's usually just a short read for the player, if they are curious.

    Hi Rodney! Great job as usual. 3 quick questions after our first session: 1. When you want to place an influence token on your player board, but you can't move a visitor from your lobby to the plaza, can you still place it? 2. May be a silly question which I think I already know but when you discover an artist you only have a deal with them for the first work they make for you, right? Not if you want to buy from them again afterwards? 3. When doing the end game scoring, on the curator or art dealer cards, do you gain the bonus money for each set you have, or only once? For instance when it says 1 sculpture is 5 coins, does 2 sculptures win you 10 coins? Greets!

    I bought this game, spent 3 months trying to understand the rulebook (not my native tongue) then played it once. The game and subject matter interest me but the game felt very "designed". Like, showing off all the possibilities of game-mechanics possible in a game. We will play it again to see if we enjoy it but we weren't sure if we'd had "fun" with the game after a play. So, that was more than a year ago now....

    Wow, kudos to you for putting a video together for this game! I own it because I found it in a discount bin somewhere super cheap and unplayed (after opening it and learning it, that is not surprising). I had to have it because it's just beautiful. And I have tried to learn it by playing the solo version. I've played it 3 times from beginning to end, and I still don't get it 🤣 I have to walk myself through the instructions for almost every single move that I make. This game is redonkulous! Like I said, it is beautiful, and once I am about three-quarters of the way through it, I start to get the hang of it, although I never do well in the end game scoring because that's a whole nother 15 minutes of things to learn while you're playing if you want to set yourself up for a better score 😂😁 I will definitely use your video next time I set it up because I think it would save me some time, and there's always something in set up that I miss. But I know that I will never play this anyway other than solo, because I don't want to lose any friends. And I have found that I have to set it up a day or so before I plan to play -- and on a table that no one's going to use for a few days -- because setup takes about 45 minutes and by the time I'm done setting it up, I am already exhausted with it 😄 As people below have already observed, without even playing it, it's a heavy game. And honestly I don't think it needed to be this heavy. Could have used a lot more play testing and editing. But it's so prettyyy! 🤩 So I'll keep it in my solitaire collection. Maybe someday some crazy boardgamer will watch this video and learn it so they can play it with me ;) Love your videos!

    Another great video as always, I love your work. I have one question: when you say that the pre-requisite of the bonus spaces on the player board (moving a visitor from the lobby to the plaza) can be ignored if it can't be fulfilled, does it always work like this or just when you move the token from the 3rd painting spot? Thanks a lot!

  • @WatchItPlayed

    @WatchItPlayed

    Always that way. If you don't have a visitor to move, then you don't have to move one in that case. But anytime you place one of those bonus tiles on your board (not just that 1 found on your 3rd space), you must move one if you can.
