The Future Of Transportation: MAGLEV | Megastructures | Spark

Speeding at 430 km/h, a futuristic magnetic levitation train makes the 30 km journey from the Pudong International Airport to the Longyang Road Station in Shanghai’s new financial centre into an eight-minute joyride. As the world’s first operating electromagnetic levitation train system, the MAGLEV travels at lightning speed and could change the way we look at train technology forever. As a transportation system, it is fast, safe and energy-efficient but the Shanghai line remains the only magnetic levitation train in commercial operation despite decades of research and countless proposals. What is slowing the MAGLEV down?

We have these in Chicago too they are called the L train. Lol. They go 10 mph and You can get robbed, Stabbed and or shot all while enjoying the crumbling infustructor in the background!

Maglev is ANOTHER tecnology that is always a few years away, like the flying cars and fusion energy.

These trains are fascinating, I remember seeing documentaries about them around 15 years ago and I've wondered just how advanced the technology has become since then

Shanghai has had a working Maglev since 2002, rode on it many times watching it goes from 0-450km+ every time going to and from the city to Pudong airport, old technology.

In 1966, as a 7 year old kid, my Granfather gave me two very strong horseshoe magnets( My father had to separate them for me as they were very strong for a 7 yr old)) I soon discovered the "Like poles repel" action and immediately thought of using them to lift a car to make it fly with a propeller at the rear -- I always remembered that and obviously I became and engineer. I just can't help thinking sometimes - yeah that was my idea- even though it had been proposed many years before I was born, however it is still brilliant to see it finally come to fruition.

I have been on the Mag Lev in Shanghai. It runs from the Airport to Pudong and was finished about 20 yrs ago. It was running at 425kmh when I was on it according to the digital display in the railcar. Still running today and they just launched another. This is not new ground breaking technology!!

The German test track pictured in Emsland was closed years ago. The Chinese are looking at re-equipping it in 2021 to further develop the technology.

I thought of this when I was younger playing with Magnets as they oppose each other and when pressed against each other how they would quickly fly past each other with incredible strength and speed. I know for a fact that I am not alone in this. I believe anyone who played with magnets had this experience and came up with similar ideas in our imagination. I just wish somehow we could ALL get the credit for it instead of the industry, it's a bitter sweet feeling, maybe if I had better parents or a support system I could be up there talking about it and giving credit to every child with a vision, not taking it.......lol. I miss being a kid. Love all of you! 😌

All these documentaries became pieces of history. Now we can analyse it with some perspective. :)

This is the best thing I’ve learnt so far! Why travel on a plane when there’s a train that has the speed but more capacity on land? Amazing!!

With friction rail transits, they're cheaper to install and produce, but more expensive to maintain. With Mag-Lev transits, they're very expensive to install, but cost much less to maintain.
