The future of money | Neha Narula

Ғылым және технология

What happens when the way we buy, sell and pay for things changes, perhaps even removing the need for banks or currency exchange bureaus? That's the radical promise of a world powered by cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. We're not there yet, but in this sparky talk, digital currency researcher Neha Narula describes the collective fiction of money - and paints a picture of a very different looking future.

The best TED talk I've ever seen. I know and understand cryptocurrencies well but the story telling, concise sentences and amazing range of subjects covered clearly, with adequate pauses between sentences was phenomenal. This remarkable lady has accomplished what so many have tried and failed at. A clear description of why the future of money is changing, how it's changing, why it's changing and what the implications could be. Bravo Neha Narula, bravo!

This was an introductory presentation on crypto currencies and the possibilities they could bring. The phrase 'crypto currency' is still very geeky and people just glaze over when you say it. But she was clever not to mention it or any of the coins until halfway through, and started with explaining the evolution of money and its problems. She knows how to explain to normal people, and that is a very important roll.

The country that the stone money is from is called "Yap" not "The Yap" the people from there are called Yapese. The stone money has value because they were carved from far away places like Palau. Most often the carvings and the transportation of the money were perilous and dangerous. People died transporting the money hence the value.

IMPORTANT: All crypto currencies use the same basic principle/assumption. That is that the collective computing power of a crypto currency mining network is always going to be more powerful( and faster) than any individual actor. This has 2 very important implications: 1) Any crypto currency requires a (costly) mining infrastructure in order to operate. Who pays for all that operational overhead? 2) If a mining infrastructure somehow collapses, and with it the cryptographic integrity, what happens to the value stored in the network? There is a good reason why big computing players like e.g. IBM are now investing in crypto currencies. Because they have access to enormous amounts of computing power. But as a user, we will just exchange one set of powerful manipulating actors (traditional banking sector and/or governments) with another set of actors with an equal amount of manipulative powers (but far less regulations or accountability). The often mentioned "democratization" of money by crypto currencies is a red herring. Yes, it could take away the control governments and banks currently have over money, but it will only put that power into the hands of whomever who has the ability to manipulate or disrupt a crypto currency mining infrastructure. And that is only one of the fundamental flaws of crypto currencies. Another flaw is that when only a few people can really (in detail) understand how a system works, it become rather easy for people with the right information to manipulate the system without users even noticing what is going on. There is a good reason why most successful currency systems throughout history have been easy to understand (and hard to destroy). Crypto currencies are too much magic, too much smoke and mirrors, for it to be really trustworthy as a currency. Of course, people can choose to place trust in whatever they don't understand. But is that smart? What if those who promote crypto currencies are just trying to cash in, while knowing very well that our current problems with money are just going to be shifted to different actors/facilitators?

The two stories she told are so irrelevant to what she tried to compare it with. The digital era, bit coins and other such currencies are the future because of their free market principles however government wont be able to tax them at all, because only the sender and reciever know the amounts being transfered.. A total Ancap society which is inevitable when we embrace this currency and free trade totally, governments and higher interests don't like this notion because they will lose all controle they have now. Many still stand in the way of this progression towards this highly technological/free market future, this is achievable in Europe but politics over the decade has stopped and reversed this progress. "if i can control a nation's wealth i care not who makes its laws" Nathan Rothschild. People such as this one are a problem which will inhibited the progress towards a bright future.

Interesting. The problem with non physical money is that there is no emotional attachment. It is physically painful for you to hand over $100 cash. You do not have that connection to digital money and that leads people to get in trouble with over drawing their bank and not controlling their money. Then there is the fact that it will destroy personal transactions. You will never be able to pay the kid next door with a $20 bill for mowing the grass. That $20 can now be tracked and taxed every time it moves. So income tax will be replaced by a transfer tax let alone the banks charging their fee for each transaction. It is a bad idea not to have money backed by something physical.

Bitcoin is anonymous lol. People are using it to buy drugs on the Internet and avoid paying taxes. Also, paper money is not backed by anything. Nixon ended the gold standard in August 1971. Since then dollars are debt based and no longer backed by gold. Bitcoin is too high tech for most people. It takes months to learn about and figure out how to use properly. If you can learn how to use this new tool, you'll be able to retire early. If you're not tech savvy, then stick to gold. Not paper debt money.

"The next generation is gonna be so much better and so much faster." How? In particular, the reason Bitcoin is slow and costs so much energy is that miners compete to win and there's no way to keep one competitor from e.g. taking more than their share--that's the anonymous aspect which is part of the security model of not relying on anyone. So how will the next generation be better? This isn't something we can take for granted--faster computers will increase the complexity of the hashes, not reduce energy consumption or lower the barrier to entry. This is not a problem of merely improving the software or getting faster computers, but is rather a mathematical and political problem. It will take an innovative new solution that perhaps no one has figured out; or a compromise between the distributed, peer-to-peer benefits of cryptocurrency on the one hand, and governments and/or instutitions getting involved on the other. IMHO.

Only if masses understood the difference between currency and money. I think basic economics should be a compulsory subject in elementary school (or may be high school) curriculum. Currency is medium of exchange (a unit of measure) for money. A nation can increase or decrease money supply to control economic indicators like inflation and GDP growth (it's called monetary policy). As more money is issued, the value of money de-valuates as compared to money from other nations (with different units of measures like euro and rupee) and commodities like gold, copper, wheat, oil etc. Bitcoin will never succeed money as it implies that few geeks can supply more money (no direct relationship to gross domestic product Or a nation state). Yes, the technology behind Bitcoin (called Blockchain) has a huge potential to solve many frictional problems we have when exchanging different types of money (currencies) .

Lucas Ullmann but again, criminals won't know because there is no identity tied to bitcoin transactions. Anyone can watch all bitcoin transactions happen in real time, but there is nothing to indicate who makes each transaction.

how old is this?? re: the *exact* year/date?? vs. the *upload* date??..because: a lot of good info..except her information re: mining on home computers, it's quite outdated..i mean, she did mention the *more updated* mining systems..but why mention the old way at all?? because, is anyone still doing it that way?? 🤔🤔🤔🤔 so, kudos to her for explaining Bitcoin/crypto-currencies in-a-nutshell-style..she even gave me some nice ways to share the info with those who have questions (otherwise, i don't try to convince people)..but really, the first 85% or so of her talk was pretty good..but that last 10% to 15% made it seem like she was conflicted re: explaining mining and also the *crypto* part of *crypto-currencies* re: the point & original philosophy behind Bitcoin [& other true cryptos]. 😮

whenever these types of crisis like corona occurs ..it destroys economy ...we have seen in past ... but there is a difference that we dont have crypto currency in past but now we have ... fiat needs to be replaced with crypto... after covid19 days of fiat are over ... there is only one solution which is crypto ... 2020 has come with many new hardware wallets... including keep key and WALAHALA Hardware wallets ... but i will prefer WALAHALA Hardware wallet ... walahala.com/ they have their hardware wallet .. exchange and coin ... their hardware wallet is decentralized connected to their own live exchange ... means your money will be in your hardware wallet only ..not even in exchange .... time has come that we dont have to be slaves to exchanges anymore..keep your assets with you only. walahala.com/walahala-wallet

Cryptocurrencies have their place, primarily in evading surveillance and protecting against inflation, but governments need to be able to control monetary supply to control monetary policy, so it's probably going to continue to be a parallel currency for now.

prolonged wars are only possible if the money supply can be inflated to pay for it (through debt). bitcoin doesn't have that problem since it can't be inflated and it is not debt based at all.

This can be an exciting future of money as long as the pioneers for the industry DONT FOLLOW THE TRADITIONAL PATH, as long as they DONT INTRODUCE THE TECHNOLOGY TO GOVERNMENTS OR SELL IT HIGHEST PAYING CUSTOMERS FIRST (which are usually the owners of the banks and the very people that are quote "holding us back"). Unfortunately, people like Neha and other early adopters are only interested in making the most money for themselves. So Neha WILL sell her ideas/infrastructure/tools to whoever pays her the most and makes her the most money. Eventually we WILL see that the very same people who had all the power before, just bought it again and have the tools to maintain it. The revolutionary power of this new tech will be repurposed and be used to maintain the old structure. It will be sucked dry of its revolutionary capabilities will flop faster than a fish out of water. This is laughable because ive seen it all before. This isnt going to revolutionize anything. And Neha Narula and her early adopter companions are to blame. Cool tech though.
