The future of modern warfare: How technology is transforming conflict | DW Analysis

The world is entering a new era of warfare, with cyber and autonomous weapons taking center stage. These technologies are making militaries faster, smarter, more efficient. But if unchecked, they threaten to destabilize the world.
DW takes a deep dive into the future of conflict, uncovering an even more volatile world. Where a cyber intrusion against a nuclear early warning system can unleash a terrifying spiral of escalation; where “flash wars” can erupt from autonomous weapons interacting so fast that no human could keep up.
Germany’s Foreign Minister Heiko Maas tells DW that we have already entered the technological arms race that is propelling us towards this future. “We’re right in the middle of it. That’s the reality we have to deal with.”
And yet the world is failing to meet the challenge. Talks on controlling autonomous weapons have repeatedly been stalled by major powers seeking to carve out their own advantage. And cyber conflict has become not just a fear of the future but a permanent state of affairs.
DW finds out what must happen to steer the world in a safer direction, with leading voices from the fields of politics, diplomacy, intelligence, academia, and activism speaking out.

Luckily, the major players have so many nukes swimming in the oceans, they really don't have to worry: they could destroy the enemy, even if the enemy nukes a few cities first. And even if they nuke the enemy first, then they themselves get nuked into oblivion. In other words: No need to rush armageddon on either side. Therefore: All the nuclear submarine powers should sign a treaty that they launch no nukes until a nuclear hit on their forces is comfirmed. It would be a great way to prevent trouble from false alarms

If you "detect" an incoming 1st strike, and you retaliate, and then the 1st strike turns out to be a radar glitch, mankind is fuggd. that's why I wrote: "All the nuclear submarine powers should sign a treaty that they launch no nukes until a nuclear hit on their forces is confirmed." such a treaty would mean no additional risk to anybody. Because even if you are nuked, you can still nuke them back. It would give us better chances to avoid an accidental armageddon.

Overall Germany has stricter export rules than most other countries, just for example Germany banned arms sales to Saudi-Arabia in 2018, but other European countries like the UK and France protested as they want to continue selling weapons to Saudi-Arabia. Germany was thus forced to accept that it would deliver components (like engines) to the other European countries so that they can finish their existing contracts with Saudi-Arabia.

You are the hypocrite. This is about proliferation of AI in weapon systems, not weapon systems as a whole. Nobody says a country is not allowed to arm itself. It's about technology overtaking the international mechanisms in place to regulate armed conflict (which is not going away anytime soon). Also, as has been pointed out, Germany has strict regulations on foreign arms sales. In fact German manufacturers have lost out on contracts and less regulated countries have filled the void.

Excellent documentary. The growth of AI is already in our lives and can be used in so many positive ways but, as usual, an element of mankind must tinker and use it to threaten and feed their greed.

Future of warfare is major global players like Russia, China, US never fighting a traditional war on their own soils and only fighting proxy wars against their enemies on battlefields foreign to both parties.

From a nation-state standpoint, we are more connected than ever which which makes us show our true selves to each other. The question is, are we willing to tolerate each other? If not, then yeah, we all know where that goes.

Besides the fact that I’m still alive none of this surprises me. Technology got stronger. And we are weaker. We built computers, robots whole unmanned armies! And no one ever asks. What happens when the enemy steals the key?
