The future of Europe | DW Documentary

For young people in Europe, the Second World War is safely in the past. But peace and the shared values of European unification are now under threat. Young Europeans are fighting to make sure that history does not repeat itself.
Migrant rescue ships turned away from Mediterranean ports. The 'Yellow Vest' protests in France. Attorneys in Poland fighting to protect the rule of law. A European Parliament that wields little legislative authority. Many Europeans have come to associate Brussels with stifling bureaucracy and lack of transparency. The European Union appears weaker than ever before, marred by disunity, the revival of national chauvinism, and discord on the key issues of the day. Is the vision that inspired the founding of the European Union beginning to fade? Will the rise of the far-right undermine the ideals of democracy, freedom and shared prosperity? Or will the young generation succeed in reviving the values and goals that inspired the European project and lent it strength?
Our documentary accompanies four young Europeans as they strive to secure a better Europe. Colombe Cahen-Salvador of France, who hopes to make a new pan-European political party a durable force. Sotiris Sideris of Greece, who works for the NGO "Network for Children's Rights" and is helping refugees secure a foothold in their new home. Polish lawyer Beata Siemieniako, who is defending people against state repression and social injustice in Warsaw. And Ksenia Eroshina of Berlin, who is acting as a witness to history by bringing the story of Holocaust survivor Gerhard Baader to youth centers and schools. Both 25-year-old Ksenia and 91-year-old Gerhard Baader are determined to ensure that the terrible events of the Nazi past will not repeat themselves.
These four young people have a shared goal - ensuring that the dream of a Europe unified under peace and security, born 70 years ago, will prevail. Will they be the future of Europe, or will their voices remain unheard? Will young people’s engagement on behalf of the European project and pan-European political parties spark a movement - or fade as quickly as it arose?

HaciWhat ? It is EU commission that dictates that in all EU countries sailers tax as well as income tax must to be 25% or greater! It is EU commission that dictates that in all EU countries national governments MUST enforce luxury stile tax! It is EU commission that dictates that in all EU counties woman’s hygiene products are categorised as “luxury product” there fore must have additional tax be enforced! UK Prime Minister (the highest nationally elected position in the country) Mrs May, went to Brussels twice begging for the right to revoke this rule in her own county & both times she was refused! It is EU commission that dictates that all EU countries are NOT allowed to negotiate their own trade deals with the 3rd parties! It is EU commission that is being selected & not elected & can NOT be fired even by EU parliament! Does it really sound as democratic society to you, where national governments are not allowed to manage their own tax or foreign policies? 🤔

Joan of Arc Alter super rich don’t form? The middle class in EU do not have any personal investments or options! Middle class in EU is much poorer than middle class in US! People can afford AC in their homes, vacations are rare & people stop working at much later ages.. small business basically do not exist! And that’s all totally understandable! How can you for saving, investments or take a risk in forming new business when 50% of your money goes in taxes (25% income & 25% sales) And question is not here about how big or small the tax is but about the freedoms of individual INDEPENDENT countries! When you take a INDEPENDENCE away from INDEPENDENT countries, what is when extremist nationalism forms! After the WW1, France was trying to micromanage Germany & what happened? It fueled the all right nationalists & started WW2! In democrats society people vote for their national government, so, it is people’s elected government that should have the power! And what’s wrong with super rich? 🤔 Do you really believe that we can call the society free when we put a sealing on ones success?

Well se it the other way if every european country had helped Germany, to prosper its economy and not give it crazy amounts of money to pay in restoration penalty from world war I. Its likely world war II wouldn’t have happened. But rest of Europe punished Germany and it from the start was resentment enough in the German public from the unfair fate of Germany so they revolted by voting a mad party they didn’t understand enough and a crazy person to be there leader. And with that the world war II was set in stone. So there are always more ways to address a problem than one and another may be better than the one you think is the right one. Through European history with Word War I and II its clear that not helping each other and locking us down is not going to fix the problem its going to continue on a path that will lead to the destruction of Europe and our core values. open borders within the European Union and thought of itself as states in a big country then there to me would not have been a WWII. Its to ways to tackle the problem to lock down and defend or include and help that is up to each what they think is the best way forward.

Foreign professionals and skilled labor that we need should be allowed and made easy to settle and start working. That will actually drive prices for work salaries up, because they will only fill business roles that no one else is qualified for and skilled enough for. We should in Europe and the Nordics only take the UN Refugees quotas that we have to and noting more. We should send refugees that come and are verified within 1.5 year without any skills and that dont need protection back home. If we as European society’s fail to verify them within that time I believe they should be allowed to stay then its our failure and they then may have already started to integrate, and assimilate.

While not necessarily something which looks at the future of the EU (which in my opinion is disintegration), those are works which more broadly look at the history, ancient and modern, and contemporary developments in the West or Western Civilization and which make predictions about it's future. Those include works such as. At Our Wits' End: Why We're Becoming Less Intelligent and What it Means for the Future by Edward Dutton and Michael Woodley. Modernity and Cultural Decline: A Biobehavioral Perspective by Book by Colin Feltham, Matthew Alexandar Sarraf, and Michael Woodley . Churchill, Hitler and the Unnecessary War by Patrick J. Buchanan. Churchill's Headmaster: The 'Sadist' Who Nearly Saved the British Empire by Edward Dutton. The Welfare Trait by Adam Perkins. The Decline of the West: Perspectives of world-history by Oswald Spengler. Some of those you can find for free online, but not most. Also be aware that some of these works especially "Modernity and Cultural Decline" can be very technical and and subsequently difficult to understand, but when one familiarizes oneself with the terminology and high order complicated words, these make for absolutely fascinating reads.

Wait, so you're assuming that immigrants should take the lowest level jobs with the least amount of required training? That's nice of you. So they are "inferior" to, say, Germans? Let's say a country is like an organization of sorts, because it is, so why would the people of an organization want to flood that organization with people of the lowest amount of skill and expect this to benefit that organization? What if I self-identify as a low-level person? Why shouldn't I, as a citizen, be able to keep these low-level jobs before an immigrant does? Or maybe why should people in other countries *complain* about their living conditions? Why don't they work harder and organize to improve their own countries? Are we now judging these countries that we have nothing to do with?

How is the west taking in all of these "refugees" going to solve the problems of the third world countries? Not every immigrant is a refugee, by the way. How insulting are you? "You should be thankful that you were not born in XYZ country." So your implication is that it is bad to be born and to live in these countries? The European Union always uses nationalism with negative connotations. The narrative for Germans is always, “nationalism; bad”. Nationalism always equals “right wing fascism” which is completely ridiculous. There are intelligent and coherent arguments for nationalism that don’t involve racism and that’s the vast majority of Europeans. Ask the refugee lady from Afghanistan would she allow her daughters marry a Greek Christian and most likely she’d say no. But that’s not prejudice? The truth is Europeans are the least prejudiced people on earth because we’re subjected to so much anti racist education it’s coming out of our eyeballs!

You could say the same thing about the nation states themselves. Historically speaking in Europe, nation states are artificial constructs created in 19th century by paving over local cultures and peoples. Why should someone in Marseille live under the rule of government in Paris and people of Paris? Because they're both French? Prior to 19th century they weren't, they were Occitan. And at that point, where does it end? Every village its own government so that no one ever has to live under the "tyranny" of the people they can't see from faraway places?

  • @defaultsettings63

    @defaultsettings63

@@Dendarang the idea that you can legitimise an unaccountable continental bureacracy by trying to undermine elected representative democracy at the national level is simply unpalatable. It is never a good sign when you have to tear something else down in order to give whatever you are promoting a modicum of legitimacy. I didn't know France was run by the "people of Paris". Who are those? Like any Democracy, I always assumed that each region elected its own representatives, who will then form part of the national assembly. Some countries also have state and local governments to deal with local issues. Citizens are always ruled by people who are incentivised to know and care about their local issues, and who are directly accountable to them. That's what makes the nation state work. But tell me more about these "people of Paris" who are lording it over the French. I'm curious 😆 If you are offended by the idea of representative democracy at the national level and would instead prefer every French village running itself in order to escape tyranny, then why stop there? Why not have every French citizen running his own affairs instead of living under the tyranny of a local village board? The reason you have to go to these nonsensical extremes is because you know that you cannot defend the continental bureacracy on its own merits.

bj0rn exactly just saying everyone should have a right to a home is nice and kumbaya but there are issues to the problem that needs to be addressed. For one there is a housing shortage in cities in Europe creating higher demand and higher prices. Housing market and where and how high real estate developers are allowed to build should be deregulated to incentivize rapid expansion and creation of more housing. creating low cost housing for entry level into the housing market is another in Europe and is a great way to help people to be able to buy an affordable home. Right know real estate is expensive because knew projects that are being built are more likely to be luxury apartments or upper middle class apartments in how much they cost because that has higher margins for real estate developers, subsidizing housing developers and projects and also demanding the Country’s and EU when subsidizing housing developments that the houses are created for working class people. That will lead to less demand and then prices will drop down to a more realistic and affordable level for working people. Creating a lot more normal apartments and houses without all the extra that luxury apartments have. Projects that are subsidized by the EU and Countrys will help to keep purchase prices of new developments very affordable for normal people. With one income in the family and new young people entering the housing market and less demand in housing will create lower prices in the rental market as well. Its a win for everyone.

Consider that the people who fall for populist rhetoric are often the people hurting the most. What are the leaders of Europe doing to address their grievances, besides dismissal, or asking the afflicted for endurance and tolerance, or shaming the afflicted for turning elsewhere for solutions? It is the poor governance of Europe by its establishment which have caused this mess. They prioritized their abstract vision of Europe over looking out for their electorate. Instead of seriously reassessing whether their vision for Europe is still relevant and desirable for the people of Europe, and whether their methods to realize this vision are appropriate, they have tried to contain the problem, resulting in a vacuum which has been exploited by populists. While I agree that it's important that we get along, I can't help but feel that this documentary is part of the containment effort and a diversion from the actual source of Europe's problems.

It definitely does not. EU medleys in to small affairs that should be up to each Country and its people how they want to govern there country. The reason is that there are local differences that makes setting rules that cant be altered or rejected can both create a feeling by local citizens in a country that there own politicians are failing them and are not doing what they want because the politicians have to follow everything EU dictated that becomes somewhat of a dictatorship, if you have no right to make changes and sometimes reject regulations and laws that can impact a country negatively. When it comes to what impacts there local citizens. I believe in the EU but it should be a federal body strictly allowed to only do stuff that involve foreign policies for the continent thats it. And make free trade deals.

Brent Knoerl Even if they can bribe the leaders, there will always be someone to take their place. It was the British people who voted for Brexit. If a no deal Brexit is achieved, the EU is done. It is the French people who started the Yellow best Protests, which is making Macron lose control. Macron was a former Rothschild banker and Angela Merkel was a communist member from an early age. These traitors were in the club long before they became world leaders. It’s not just money, it’s ideology. Question is, does the EU have enough money to bribe enough people. They are already have trouble as it is keeping it together. George Soros himself came out panicking about the collapse of the EU. They couldn’t bribe the leaders of Poland or Hungary or other Eastern European. Russia influence is now growing among the populace of Europe. Don’t lose hope friend. More and more people are starting to realize that there are more important things to achieve out of life than a new mansion or a car.

the real democratic threat is that we systematically alienate people that dont support unconditional immigration to their continent. the establishment (politicians, journalists, artists) is not willing to listen to their arguments and try to picture people with this believes as stupid and their opinion as not valid. democracy means listening to everybody, taking their worries serious. these people somehow think that democracy means having a certain opinion on topics, like immigration, society or on their relation to their homecountry. imo thats a huge misconception.

The principle that everybody has the same opportunities is not a desireable outcome for many people who do not realise the privileges they already have due to family, regional and national connections and status. When many young people are unemployed or underemployed some perceive this as a failure on the part of the State or the EU. In fact such difficulties and challenges are normal life for many people. Having a workforce of 400 million people means more competition for scarce jobs, not less. This is especially true for people from the rich regions of Europe who now have to compete with the poor regions.

Systematic support is not a pipe dream, it's what democracies already do, that's the very reason the state exists. They take taxes from everybody and use it to create schools, hospitals, jobs etc. that are accessible to everybody, and create programs for those who are at risk of falling off into a lower class due to various problems (poverty, illness, discrimination etc.) people who could be just as valuable workers if they only received some aid to get back on their feed. If a government does not do this then why do they even exist? Then it's not a democratic institution, just a mafia that protects its own interests. Governments receive their mandate from the people and that mandate can be recalled if they do not do what they were elected to.

So in Warsaw both sides of political scene can marche and express their political views and according to DW its bad and undemocratic. Because "more united Europe" will be Europe of one mind, one party, one idea, one thought, one political line. We had this under communist rule 1945-1989 and it will bve never repaated in Poland again. Poland today its one of the best democracies in the Europe with all political sides represented in parliament and political live. Accidentaly, Poland without muslim/african mass-immigration (but with close to 1.5 million of Ukrainian migrants) its one of the safest countris on this continent, check murder and other statistics.
