The Future of 3D Printing & Where it is NOW!

Ойын-сауық

Welcome everyone! Today I want to take a small break from the usual content and talk about the current space of Hobby Level 3d Printing! What printers seem to be upsetting the market? Which ones are good? Or bad?
This is just an informal talk on my thoughts and I figured why not share it with you all! The 3d Printing space is evolving faster and faster every single day! The pricepoints of these machines and what they have to offer is getting better with nearly every new iteration!
So sit back and relax for a few while I talk about where we've come from, Where we are now, and where I think we're going!

    What I'd like to see is a "replicator box". Think of a X1C with built in 3d scanners. Simply place an object on the build plate and press a button. When you hear the "ding" you take the object off the build plate, select your material, press the button again and walk away. When you heare the next "ding" you go and take your finished item out and repeat until you have all the things you need....or until you run our of shelf space. Whichever comes first.

    Good assessment of the future for "personal" 3D printing trends. I like the direction it is finally taking. However, don't knock the Anet A8. I built my first one about six years ago and it is still cranking out prints, yes, I did do some modifications to make it safer. In fact I used it to print out a much needed part for work, saving them over ten grand. As a reward they bought me an Ultimaker 3. Building my first printer taught me sooo much. The experience was worth the hours of tinkering. Love your vids, inspiring and full of great advice. Thanks.

    I feel like putting klipper on an existing design might be ELEGOO’s first step toward making a P1P/K1 competitor. Now that they have layed the groundwork for that, it’ll be easier for them to implement into new designs that complement their hardware. Definitely agree though, Neptune 4 is just a faster 3.

    I am personally hoping that ALL of our "next gen" printers will have an answer to failed prints. Whether that's spaghetti detection through LiDar or something else. There is nothing more frustrating than coming home from work or waking up to a failed print, a ton of wasted filament, a clogged nozzle, and a hell of a mess to clean up.

  • @caramelzappa

    @caramelzappa

    11 ай бұрын

    This is an uncomfortable answer but failed prints are almost always user error of some sort. Your results can only be as good as your input. Well maintained and tuned machine with a level and clean bed is #1, but even if you do all that perfectly right there are other variables you need to pay close attention to like the ambient temp/humidity. Drying your fillament, but also just not every model is actually designed well for printing so choosing the model and how you slice it has a huge impact on how well your prints can turn out. Failures will always happen, no machine in any industry is 100% infallable. And spagetti detection will be great for those instances. But if you control the other variables, those failures should be increasingly rare.

    @@caramelzappa Agreed! I was getting majorly frustrated with 3d printing when I first started. I upgraded to a better machine and guess what, more frustrations because I thought it would fix all my problems! Nope. Sometimes it can be the 3d file you choose, but 9 times out of 10 it is your settings, both manual and software. It's pretty amazing how just a few tweaks of settings in Cura can make great prints right off the bat. To anyone out there who is frustrated: Take your time. Start small and work your way up. Try and get your printer to the stage where you can load a file, hit print, and just walk away and let it do it's thing. That's where i've finally gotten to and it's pretty awesome. But I'll be honest, it didn't happen overnight!

    Bambulab X1 Carbon has spaghetti detection already. So, this feature exists. I disagree that the spaghetti problem is a user problem. The X1 Carbon ships with a smooth sheet which is terrible for PLA with glue stick. Switch to textured sheet and adhesion is awesome and no more spaghetti.

  • @caramelzappa

    @caramelzappa

    11 ай бұрын

    @@i-tested It has it but still can be improved. lots of reports of false positives and missed failures. I think the major thing it's missing is that it does not detect when there is a clog and the machine keeps printing with no fillament. Your example is exactly my point. User prints with the wrong plate for the job (which Bambu shouldn't have shipped with the machine) and adhesion fails. Switch to (clean!!!) Pei, smooth or textured, and far less failures. The operator is the one in control of the majority of variables that lead to print failures.

    There was a time when I thought I would never buy a 3D printer, mostly due to price. The other reason was I just don’t do great with 3D programs. I’m sure I could work at it and get better, but then I think about the price of the printers, and decide not to do anything… Then the printers come out with better features, all inclusive, you plug it in, and start printing! On top of that, the price is down to where a person can actually get one. So now I’m thinking about buying one as soon as my studio is done. It will be a addition to what I do as an artist, and I think it will be fun too! I’m sure printers will get faster, because the public demands having everything now. The companies will have to succumb to the demands of the public, and create the affordable fast,finely detailed printer. It will happen, just not soon I’m sure.

    Great video! For the past few years, I have been focusing on SLA printing as FDM printing was a dead space. I still have my CR-10 and Ender 3, and have tuned them to perfection. I have been holding out on a Core XY printer, as I have tons of spare parts for my FDM printers and they work for what I need. I am, however, definetly seeing the potential opportunities for the P1P, but I will likely hold out for a large format(400mm XYZ or more) Core XY. The only downside(for me, at least) is the turn key approach to 3D printing. I loved the trial and error of tuning my printers, taking the machines apart and getting familiar with the machine's ins and outs. I feel like I had more control and could resolve my own problems that would pop up. I think if 3D print companies are going to get into Turn Key, they need to have excellent Customer Service and proper documentation. Other wise, it is just going to be a massive headache having a 3D printer that doesn't work and not knowing why and how to resolve.

    My personal opinion on this subject would have to be; That its like evolution, its just gonna keep on branching off into different catagories based on preference. Some will want to continue to show off and go for the expensive off the shelf printers and some will want to go for the cheap ones. Some will want to continue to tinker with theirs and personally i prefer to tinker, learn as i go, end up spending more in parts to get there, rather than rushing to get to the end game. But what is more satisfying from the whole 3d printing senario is, Personalisation of your machine. It becomes as i have stated, personal to you and as a creator with multiple skills, theres more gratification in achieving those objectives whilst learning to overcome your own difficulties to achieve. Yes, people want the next best thing or are inspired, but do you really gain the same satisfaction out of buying the best or does one prefer to work hard and put hrs in to reach that same level? Ive got a Anet A8 bedslinger from 2018 and it has evolved into a beast. Yes its the old type of cartisian machine, but whilst everyone else is still windowshopping for the best machine, mine is so personal to me, its like art, its become my baby! In the long-run, even i want to reach the profession machine levels like a voron 4.2, but even then, id want to customise it to my own liking! Its like most tings for guys; with PC's, cars, Bikes, whatever, its better when its custom made for you... So running after comercial products, just follows the trend like having the best mobile phone or the largest 8K Tv etc... its BS and only suits the large companies. Doing things as a community based project and watching it evolve, and everyone gets the shared satisfaction from their social community has to be or jus is better than for comercial gain. So choose which rabbit hole you chose to go down... coz you got the money to boast and selfishly, or to do things in commune so everyone can learn and gain from it would be the prefered choice. When you think about it, what are people doing with their machines at the end of the day...? Boasting to their friends that they've got the best new 3d printer and printing downloaded novelty items off the internet? Or are we looking at this more for its practicle use and using it as a tool, to create, invent and to produce something from their mind and bringing that model into reality? Its gotta have a purpose, a function and yes it is a tool at d end of d day... So... which consumer are you? Like i said, its just gonna keep evolving and when some of those branches do better than some, some will fade off and some people will flutter between different aspects of 3d printing. I as i have said, see it as a tool and like to personalise my machine by being artistic and imaginative to design new things for mine. Cosplay is a good example of this, because it provides a platorm aside from 3d printing for people or creators to design or just create costume pieces for a community of super hero and fantasy art fans! But again, its used as a tool. Its a lot said, but even i know i could have had x amount of machines by now for the money ive invested into all this. but it dont count, its the journey getting there which is my focus and skills developing too. Electrically, mechanically and as a whole in creating custom machines. Lets not forget either... were talking about a f'in machine at the end of the day. its not a f'in self serving robot ffsafe lol... Thats also from an artistic point of view too... Its fun to learn, but lets not get caught up in the hype either or we'll end up chasing any carrot hung in our faces...🤭

    My squad of 5 Creality printers were on borrowed time after getting my first X1 Carbon combo, and all 5 were sold and gone after my 2nd X1C arrived. The last frontier for me is the holy grail of perfect layer adhesion. Once home printers can achieve that (with highly conceptual industrial examples already existing), the gap between FDM 3D printing and injection molding in terms of quality and strength will be almost negligible.

    I just dont think any FDM printer is really turn key and there is always a need to tinker, repair, upgrade these machines as at some point something it going to break or wear. Something in the middle IMO would be ideal. A really good chassis that can be easily taken apart. I hear quite a bit around the bambu owners where things have broken and arent repairable, glued carbon rails dont help. Loving the direction printing is going. I print large so having a faster printer so i can print using smaller nozzles or layer heights that dont take days would be amazing

    There are a few people who have started pushing the limits of plastic melting. It's generally 1000-1300mm/s the problem becomes the actual filament design. To print faster you need to use more heat, more heat pushes the limits of filament structures. There will be less need for PLA and more ABS, ASA and PCCF used I think. Which works for me. My vorons and rat rigs already run them at around 600mm/s 850mm/s if I want to do a speed run.

    @ulforcemegamon3094 from the testing that I have seen and run on my own machines it doesn't really hold up in terms of any rigidity or strength, I would say due to the high temps you have to print it at, it was only designed for speed tests and races

    I think the point about you can only go so fast is hitting the nail on the head. You can only melt and then cool plastic so fast. Melting quicker is easier to solve, but cooling faster means pushing a lot more air (louder fans). At some point, its not acceptable for the hobbyist. From hobbyist POV, outside of going bigger/smaller build sizes, how many new features are left to add? Seems like the next evolution of 3d printing needs to come from the motion system (5-axis printing), or from the materials side ( a material that melts faster, cools easier, really bio-degradable?)

    I can build you a 5-axis printer from scratch in a week. The problem is software, all the cam programs for 5axis cnc is locked behind a massive paywall. We are lucky to have free access to so many slicers these days we take it for granted. Another example is non-planar printing (true 3d printing) its been out for a while but hasnt been commercialized for hobbyist yet. As for materials - pellets should be the next big think - however few companies are delving deep into this.

    About the "the speed has an upper limit you can only melt plastic so fast" My first dumb idea is that probably would be possible to increase the number of print heads. Each would do only a section on the xy and all the same at z... So melting plastic may have a limit but probably there are other solutions to increase speed for a long time... So I would suggest companies stop making excuses and start developing a better faster product instead of stifling Innovation through selling us the same crap to have their pockets full without working... I really believe there is still quite a long upside on 3d printing Innovation...

    Started on an Ender 3 in 2020 printing face shields to donate to hospitals for Covid 19. Then printed a few drone parts, fidget toys n models, and a few flexys, lithophanes held my attention for a while but kinda got bored, I had a few super random projects that got me into Tinkercad playing with shapes, making things that looked like something I’d put on my fridge my kid drew haha😂I think the straw that broke the camels back was manual bed leveling… I was just getting tired of it even with upgraded springs. So I jumped into a Bambu Lab X1C and it reignited my fire for 3D printing. I usually give a lot of my prints away to friends and family I’ve sold enough prints off requests to make certain things to pay both printers off and it’s all been hobby grade fun stuff. I’m not into cosplay but I’ve really enjoyed making Helmets for my kiddo and me and learning to post process prints and it would be really cool to print a custom fit Hulkbuster suit 😅. I would ABSOLUTELY jump on board with a larger build volume X1C or P1P. I’ve had the opportunity to learn more about 3D printing nuances and troubleshooting prints due to how quickly prints come out of these things. I had a project on my Ender 3 (which I upgraded over 3 years and is tuned nicely) that took 5 days. I ran the same project a few months later at just over 19 hours on the X1C. I don’t mind knock offs, I think the whole industry will continue to grow incredibly and amazingly from here forward 🎉 Creality gave me my start, Bambu has my respect currently.

They relatively recently released a FW update for the Ender 5 Plus that fixed none of the issues of the previous FW and in fact introduced another issue where random numbers were shown for the ABL mesh, did they fix it? of course not! they started shipping new printers with it despite being well aware of this fault, many well known KZreadrs have stopped reviewing Creality printers and some of them because Creality tried to bribe them, so Creality ship review units to not so well known channels who amazingly give them glowing reviews and seemingly gloss over those issues that have already been made aware to the community.

    lol, my printer is a prusa i3 i built in 2012 that still runs marlin firmware, it was the cheapest kit you could get at the time ($400) and didn't even come with instructions. But it has thousands of hours on it now so last night i finally just ordered a Neptune 3 Plus for $320.

    I've been "researching" what to buy for my 1st (and maybe only) 3d printer in the past year. Right now I can afford a budget level so for now it's either speed (Neptune 4/Pro, Sovol SV07, Anycubic Kobra 2) or size (Neptune 3 Plus, Sovol SV06 Plus). I am looking for a machine to print Star Wars stuff. I have until around Thanksgiving to make my purchase as it will be a bday gift to myself. Hopefully one of these companies come out with a 300x300 version of their fast printers

    I agree with you , Quality is already great at high speeds , so unless is a extremely cheap 3D printer or a specific case (like Prusa) , 50/80mm won't cut it anymore and you will need higher speeds

  • @astrophysicistguy
    @astrophysicistguy11 ай бұрын

    Not sure I understand your comment about Prusa being a “high end consumer product “? Their i3 Mark 3s kit is only $649 and even their new Mark 4 is only $799. Sure that’s not a $300 printer but I still think you get what you pay for. Yeah if you’re in to building helmets their build volume doesn’t support 1 piece prints but I think people whin way too much about having to glue stuff together … I’ll trade print quality and a printer that simply works without issue over build volume any day. I don’t want to have to spend time figuring out a printer, I just want it to work , like a ball point pen. Also people still don’t believe the quality of my prints off the bed. Unless I make a mistake gluing parts together I never have to sand … print and straight to priming every time. I just finished building the most screen accurate Mando heavy infantry tri barrel model out there and there was only 1 part of 28 that I had to slice …

    Honestly it comes down to what material you want to print. For ABS and CF you need enclosure and strong gears which is what the x1 is for, for pla and petg then p1p. I got the p1p because i print PLA which needs to be open and not enclosed, plus is cheaper so works out for me 😁

    If the purpose of heated beds is to help create a base layer which scaffolding can adhere to, why not cheat and have something like a rough paper, which plastic would melt in to? Once melted into the paper fibres, it'd be a poor-man's fibreglass, but also a ready surface that can be printed on.
