This is the tune played for “Flora Day“ on May 8th every year (except when the date falls on a Sunday or Monday) in Helston, Cornwall as a celebration of the passing of winter and the arrival of spring. There are many theories of its origin, but the first recorded mention is in 1790, but again it’s doubtful if anyone could give you the official start date.
