The Fundamentals of Blocking - 3 Stages of Blocking

Спорт

How do we get the most out of blocking techniques? Well its not just a case of mastering the basic arm movements, you must consolidate this and use your whole body and then develop the correct timing and distancing to control your opponent either through kuzushi or opening in their defence. We also look at how we then need to contract blocks from large to efficient and then consider the aspect of Ju in relation to basic throws.
In Karate it is unfortunately common for blocking techniques to become stagnant as they remain at a basic level only and there is a need to develop beyond this. Aikijujutsu utilises the use of efficient slips, parrys in conjunction with hard blocking techniques when necessary to overcome the opponent. This is reflected more so in some karate styles more than others and hence blocking becomes much more dynamic and effective. Despite a difference in starting points and difference in consistently both systems ultimately lead to similar conclusions.

Uke means to receive, not block. The word 'block' itself is misleading.

This stuff looks great, but why is it never used in MMA? The only place I see it performed is in demonstrations.

It is, but applied under pressure it appears aesthestically different than it does under compliant conditions
