It's a Chinese red wood and i think he melted bee's wax to make the chair water proof and easier for the joint to move around, it's an outdoor furniture.

Grandpa Amu must have found some of the last remaining stocks of giant Pear wood. I've never a pice that big before! While we all have seen several videos of the construction of a Luban chair, this video makes layout of the cuts less of a mystery.
