    Sauron wanted the dwarf rings back because even though they didn't allow him to control the dwarves, they had still been made from him. A portion of his Will was still inside them. And even though he could not dominate the dwarves, the rings still eventually brought ruin to the dwarves by making them targets for dragons. Imagine how great the Dwarven civilization would have been in the 3rd Age if all of their Strongholds had not been destroyed repeatedly.

    What goes around my head is the numbers of the rings. It is 1 ring to rule them all, 3 rings to the elves, 7 rings to dwarfs and 9 to men. It strikes the eye that these are all uneven numbers and the number 5 is missing in this count. So might there be a group of 5 rings that we don't know about?

    Great video. Just a couple of points. Gil-Galad ruled the Noldor from Lindon, not Eregion, which was under Celebrimbor until his death and its destruction early in the War of the Elves and Sauron. Also, Gandalf the Grey fought off most, if not all, of the Ringwraiths at Weathertop and later in this limited form killed Durin's Bane. After his return as the clearly more powerful Gandalf the White, he said he was the 2nd most dangerous being in Middle-Earth after Sauron. So, there is no reason to think the Witch King would have been a match for Gandalf the White, who was, after all a Maia just like Sauron.

    Fantastic as always.Only thing is slightly off was Isildur didn’t take it to gain great power, he genuinely believed he could do good with it and when he realised he was wrong he did everything he could to send it to Elrond which is why he gets ambushed and killed. Also he lost most of his sons in the battle, even one people believed would be the greatest and wisest king that Numenor would ever have. Unfinished tales.

    There's no indication Isildur realized he was wrong or had any intention of surrendering the one ring. He was returning to Arnor after settling matters in Gondor when he was ambushed, not going to Elrond. If he wanted to destroy the one ring, given that Sauron was discorporated and his minions scattered and in hiding, Isildur could easily have marched into Mordor and thrown the ring into the cracks of doom. But if he was unable to do so within days of getting the Ring, there's no way he could do it after it had been influencing him for a couple of years.

    it seems to me that Sauron didn't just choose 9 extraordinary men for strength or intelligence. I believe that Sauron launched 9 great political dynasties through these men, giving rise to divine lineages - practically political lineages with successions of the same clan / noble families - as if it were a perpetual contract of a distant ancestor imprisoning his subjects, relatives and serfs in a pyramid of power - the royalty, the priestly elite, the courtiers, the nobles and the people through a political system that enslaved all countries, cities, peoples and civilizations in a true bond of blood. The use of the specters of the Ring would not be limited to the powers of fear and aversion of death, but could be an addition to religious control with the temporal control of a monarch chosen "by a god of fire" for dynasties with divine origin, more or less as in the city-states of Greece where nobles and kings traced their origins to the gods of Olympus. So imagine the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of these 9 kings, sorcerers and renowned warriors who do not age, who are invisible and do not suffer from any mundane evil (old age, disease, etc). In a period of obscurantism and the use of a false Sauron religion, subjects should see them as immortals chosen by the "Sun God from a land of fire".

    The thing is that by the time the War of the Ring rolls around the Nazgul are maybe two thousand years old or even older if I remember correctly? They weren't even born in the Third Age, and there could still be a lot of political clout with the Harad, Rhun, and Black Numenore, but it doesn't look like they directly control these regions they're just leading Sauron's orcs.

    Sauron was a bit of a naff Dark Lord compared to Melkor. Creating the rings which didn't at all affect the Elves, didn't really do much to Dwarves, and his 9 men couldn't even retrieve the one ring from 4 hobbits! In the end they couldn't get it off 2 hobbits and a pathetic creature. You gotta say that's pretty lame compared to the first badass Dark Lord who took on the Valar, high elves, Edain and most of middle earth.

    Comparing Maiar to Valar?

  • @skatemetrix
    @skatemetrix2 жыл бұрын

    Here's a cool connection: the power of the three Elven rings mirror the abilities of the Valar Manwë, Ulmo and Aulë, the three Valar who were largely responsible for shaping the land, the mountains, the interior of Arda and all sources of water. So Vilya is the Ring of Air and the most powerful, Nenya is the Ring of Water and is the 2nd most powerful Elven ring, and Narya is the Ring of Fire and the 3rd most powerful Elven ring. Manwë is the Lord of the Air and the most powerful Lord of the Valar, Ulmo is the Lord of the Waters and just a little less powerful than Manwë, and Aulë is the Lord of the Earth and just a little less powerful than Ulmo. The Narya and Aulë connection is weaker but Narya creates courage and hope in people which drives them to good deeds and to create good things or do good actions, while Aulë creates goodly things for the benefit of all and creates for the sake of creation. So Celebrimbor has done something similar, in a much smaller fashion, by creating these Elven rings to mimic the abilities of Manwë, Ulmo and Aulë.

    I always wondered. Since the three elven rings were tied to the one even though forged in secret in enough way that the elves became aware of the deception and removed them until saurons defeat at the end of the second age, why couldn't they sense that the ring was found when smeagol put it on? Smeagol most likely wore the Ring when he first found it and Sauron was still dispersed thus Smeagol not turning into a wraith , but once Sauron had partially returned he could see who was wearing ( like when Frodo wore it ) ... I believe this is why you see Smeagol holding it like jewel rather than on his finger ... But as far as the Elves not detecting Smeagol, I think the other two responders to your question are right , while those who wore it could see into the wraith realm and be invisible ,the Ring was made by Sauron alone and he had poured his will into the Ring ,and so only did his will

    I don't think your theory is airtight. Since the ringwraiths have no will of their own, what the ringwraiths possessed is literally possessed by Sauron as they have become an extension of him. This means that the rings could be completely possessed by Sauron even while the ringwraiths are wearing them! I think this is what Tolkien was getting at, based on your explanations and the passages you quoted.

    After the example of what happened to the first 9 to accept a ring from Sauron, finding 3 more to take one probably became very much more difficult. The bearers of the nine acquired great power and wealth at first but eventually ended up completely enslaved to Sauron's will.

  • @curtduval481
    @curtduval4812 жыл бұрын

    The nine rings fate is not contradicted if you use a different interpretation. Gandalf states “the nine he had gathered to himself” could mean they were under his total control on the wraiths. When Galadriel states “him that holds the seven and the nine” is she stating that none of the dwarven rings had been destroyed by dragons? Here and in the Unfinished Tales passages, “holds” and “held” could refer to controls or holds in his power. Since Sauron has possessed the nine kings/wraiths, he can possess the rings without them being on his person. After all, I hold the title on my car even if it is not in my hand or on my person.

    I completeley agree... and not only that, but it makes no sense that Sauron would need to hold himself the actual nine rings to control the ringwraiths... it makes no sense, because I understand that the rings possess some part of his will and intentions, and that is that part that grants powers and corrupts the minds, but why would he need to have "the one ring" to bind their minds to his own if he then has to physically have those rings to control the bearers? Sounds dumb... He made the one ring so that he could control the bearers of the sixteen, if he needed to have the actual rings in his hand or whatever why the heck would he had forged the one ring??

    So was the dragon sickness that thorin had partly because of sauron trying to exert his will on the rings? Because thorin had one of the dwarven rings didn't he?

    The dragons are so foul and exude such greed that their stench corrupts the gold after to long of their laying upon it that those who come into contact for extended periods can become corrupted as well. Thorin spent a long time in the hoard looking for the Arkenstone that he was exposed and sickened.

    If the wearers of the One Ring are allowed to travel to the Undying Lands, allowing Bilbo, Frodo, and Sam to travel there, would any of the other ring bearers be allowed to travel if they were essentially not evil in life? Such as if there were any dwarf lords with ring? Gimli was allowed as a special gift to travel and never wore a ring. Wondering if any other individuals would have been allowed...

    I’m going to say no. Men were not allowed to step foot on the Undying Lands, and I don’t believe being a bearer of a Ring of Power would allow them to break that rule. Dwarves also didn’t care about the Undying Lands, so even if a ring would allow them to pass, I don’t believe they would choose to go, which is why it’s so special that Gimli chose to accompany Legolas when it was time for him to depart MiddleEarth.

    I do not agree with what you say about Sauron holding the nine rings instead of the ringwraiths using them... they are the artifacts through which Sauron controls their wills and has them do whateve he wants. Without them their wills would be free... The one ring is the one that allows Sauron to bind the other bearers will to his own. Once their wills are binded, the One has no purpose on that sense... that is why the nine are still completely loyal even though the One is not in Sauron's hand. But without the rings in their fingers... Sauron would have no control or at least it would not be complete...

    I think you're not grasping the significance of what he put into the One Ring. He tied his life force to it, bound all his will and essence to the ring itself... This makes the ring almost like his soul, more or less. Can he make another ring? Sure, I suppose, but at the very least, he'd need the original present as well in order to transfer his essence from the original ring into another one. And I'm not any sort of lore expert here, so maybe he can't do that either... BUT what I DO know is that the One Ring is, essentially, his very essence/life force/soul/power/strength. So simply making a new ring doesn't solve the problem.

    Something that has always bothered me is, if the rings of power were always intended to be used by the elves, why is the full spell “one ring to rule all” detail how many each race get, also especially in regards to the 7, why would the dwarves accept them after the war of Sauron and the elves. As much as I loath to admit it, but the tale from shadow of Mordor makes more sense, in that Celebrimor deliberately made the rings of power to gift to the other races, so that the elves could “influence” them.

    I wondered the same thing, but when I researched what was inscribed on the ring only contained the last 3 verses and not the first five. One can only assume those verses were later added but I could be wrong and welcome clarification myself.

  • @jamief1263

    @@michaels7325 yes, because it wouldn’t fit. That said part of the verse doesn’t make sense either as it states “one ring to find them”. Why would he need to find them, if knew where they were all along and that the elves were intended to wear them. “In the darkness, binder them” could be interpreted as Sauron wanting all the rings with him so that he could draw he could draw from their power, as he certainly seems to have done this with the 9, as he keeps them, but the I think it means that all the rings and their wearers and their wills would be bound to him, his ring and his will. It seems strange that he did not give a ring of power to the king of Numenor, as they seemed to be troubled in their thoughts of their mortal nature and would be prime to manipulation, so it stands to reason that the elves either let the Numenoreans know about the rings or Sauron had already given the 9 rings to men and their fall revealed his treachery. Tolkien made a world like none other, but there are certain in consistencies in the histories if you look hard enough, but they are not world breaking.

    The first part of that poem was added later once the disposition of the rings was complete. At the time Sauron made the One, the only other Rings of Power he knew about were the 16 he and Celebrimbor made, which were all originally intended for the elves.

    so the nazgul are enslaved to their own ring which is enslaved to the one ring. Sauron wears the one and holds the nine. so when the nine die they become slaves to their own ring which is held by Sauron who is the wearer of the one ring. hummm... so you could say that the nine obey Sauron because he HOLDS their individual ring and that ring is bound to sarouns one ring. the nine are ACTUALLY loyal to their OWN ring which IN TURN bends them to the will of saroun { they do the will of sarun but its not the one ring they are loyal to, its their own ring, and its telling them to do the will of sarun}... THAT MEANS, sure if the one ring is destroyed then the nine lose power, BUT if one of the nine rings is destroyed then Sauron will lose that corresponding wraith, which is why at their death when he would have complete control over the soul of the weaers of the nine, he came and took back their ring. THAT MEANS......HE CAN STILL CONTROL THE NINE WITHOUT THE RINGS IN HIS POSSESION because their soul would still be bound to their ring which is still controlled by his one, it doesnt matter where their ring is just as long as their ring is, BUT IF THE NINE ARE DESTROYRED HE LOSES THEM, SO THE SAFEST PLACE FOR THE NINE RINGS TO BE IS WITH HIM WHICH IS WHY HE TOOK THEM BACK. FOR SAFE KEEPING
