This video misses out on a lot of things... In 2010, at the same award show a year later, Taylor Swift wrote an incredibly heartfelt song (Innocent) about forgiveness and making mistakes at 32. She was super graceful about the whole thing. She never said a negative word about him. If you watch the full video of the phone call, you see Taylor very explicitly say that she's glad the lyric wasn't mean because she was scared he was going to call her a b*tch or something and she didn't want that. Of course, she'd be upset then that he added that specific lyric in his song. She continues to say that she's worried about being over-exposed in the media, and she's at a stage of her career where people are just waiting for her to make a mistake. She was aware that people could very easily turn against her. He uses that ammunition. In the call, he says a lot of random stuff about how he's broke and he's in debt with his wife, and how he lives like a billionaire even though he's broke cuz he's a cultural trillionaire, etc. The music video of this song, which I believe came out after the phone call leaked, included Kanye in bed with naked hyperrealistic wax statues of a bunch of celebrities. Right next to Kanye was Taylor. If that wasn't f'ed up enough, it also included a wax statue of Rihanna right next to a wax statue of Chris Brown - a man who was held guilty for assaulting her during their relationship. And wax statues of his wife Kim K and Ray J (the guy from her leaked sex tape). It also included a wax statue of Donald Trump and Bill Cosby. And again, they were all naked statues. Idk if there were others, these are just the ones I remember. When he was touring this album, he would get his crowd to literally chant 'F Taylor Swift' during the concert. There's footage of this in the Miss Americana documentary on Netflix. Kim K released the edited video and started a hate campaign against Taylor, and then when the original video got leaked during the pandemic, she tried to play it off as Taylor reigniting the whole thing and tweeted about it saying she doesn't get why people are so mad. She continued to say that TAYLOR LIED and said no call happened, and she just released the video to say that the call did happen. Anyone who has seen Taylor's original statement knows the truth. Kim also then tried to use this as a marketing strategy by offering a discount on her skims shapewear brand. Meanwhile, Taylor put up a story on IG saying that while she was aware that people were looking for her to respond or make a statement now that the full video was out, there were more important things to watch and shared a link to Feeding America saying she had made a donation and urging others to do it. Reminder - all this was happening in March 2020, when covid and the lockdown were so new and people were suffering. You see a world of difference in how Kim and Taylor respond to the situation. (Taylor did acknowledge the fact that the video was illegally recorded. She never pursued the case legally, because as she had always stated she just wanted out of the narrative.) In 2018, Taylor moved from her original record company Big Machine Records to Republic Records, because she wasnt allowed to own her music by BMR. BMR owned her first 6 albums and she wasn't allowed to buy them back. In 2019, the owner of BMR sold the record label to Scooter Braun - who at the time everything went down was managing Kanye. Basically, Scooter was also a part of the team that bullied Taylor Swift. In 2019, Taylor also won Artist of the Decade, Woman of the Decade and a bunch of other awards. During her acceptance speech, and all through that time on social media and interview, she made it very clear that she planned on re-recording her music, the music industry was setting a bad precedent, artists should be allowed to own their work, and that she had worked hard to reach where she was without anyone else making her famous. In 2020, Kanye had a fallout with Scooter, and was in the same situation as Taylor - an artist who didn't own their art. On Twitter, Kanye talked about how he was going to revolutionize the industry and make it more transparent. In a tweet, he also said he personally was gonna make sure Taylor got her albums back, because Scooter Braun was a close family friend, once again talking about Taylor Swift to stay relevant and dragging her back into the narrative. She never responded to that explicitly, but has continued to put out new albums, as well as re-record 2 of her previous albums. A lot of her songs allegedly reference him - in some cases its very obvious, in others its more ambiguous, but she's never actually name dropped him in her music. Because she doesn't need to name drop him to stay relevant!

He knows the kind of publicity he gets when he mentions Taylor, because everyone then wont just talk about the current scenario but will recap all the other bs. That's when you get articles like "A timeline of the Kanye West-Taylor Swift beef" which will increase his 'hits' online.

It's not even about just calling her a bitch. It's the fact that he says 'I MADE that bitch FAMOUS'. Taylor takes a lot of pride in her songwriting and hardwork, she identifies as a songwriter more than a singer. She was livid that Kanye was trying to take credit for her career. She won Album of the Year at the Grammys in 2015 when all this was going down, and in her speech she alluded to this.

She had a perfect response to that during the phone call by saying "I sold seven albums off that album before you did that which is what happened", meaning he weren't in anyway responsible for her fame or her success as an artist since she already saw plenty of success before the whole VMA thing. There's no doubt that the incident exposed her to plenty of people that didn't much care before but when taking into account the success she had previously, it was safe to say that she was already on her way to being a major player in the industry.

When she released Reputation, the album debuted with 1.2 million copies in it's first week. Her single, "Look what you made me do", was the most viewed video on youtube for the first 24 hours at the time, everybody wanted to hear what she wanted to say. She also went on tour for this album. The tour then went and became the highest grossing US tour of all time despite the critics saying she was cancelled.

She's a true artist and if you have an open mind, you'll be impressed. Everyone sort of overlooks her because she's known for country and pop, but her lyrics are genius and even her most catchy pop songs have deep meaning. I highly recommend folklore, evermore, or Red (Taylor's Version) as your introduction to her catalog.

I am incredibly aware of her level of fame and popularity at the moment but there are still many people that judge her as an artist by radio singles and say "just not for me" when there is so much more to her catalog. they didn't mention it in the video but after the leaked edited phone call and the public hating her she actually disappeared for a whole year and no one physically saw her that whole time until the release of her album 'Reputation'.

How anyone can look at Kanye West with even just a tiny bit of respect is beyond me. He's an awful human being, which he's proven all by himself time and time again. I'm just grateful Taylor had the strength to keep going in spite of all this, it would've taken less to break me.

I love this reaction 😂 “does kim kardashian also suck?” Lmaooo Ok, to provide a female perspective - I do think the lyric “I made that b famous” is worse than “we might still have sex”. The sex lyric is a misogynistic joke (not sure if it was “still have” or “owe me” because it’s different in each video) But the famous lyric is just downright disrespectful. A lot of successful women are questioned upon their success. Kanye already did that to Taylor when she won that award. I highly recommend listening to Taylor swifts song “the man”. It talks about how people question women’s success and also how men are easily believed. Which she also personally went though as everyone believed Kanye and basically cancelled her though she was always telling the truth.

Reputation would be the best album to react to following this video, this entire era is her embracing this image of being a "snake" and playing with that (especially with the music video for Look What You Made Me Do)

She is very proud of what she has created and when he said "I made that Bitch famous" she felt he was belittling her work. The backlash was so bad they were painting murals of her dating her birth and death! " Miss Americana" movie would be a good one for you to watch.

Saying We “might have sex” is far far better than “I made that bit@h famous.” In the latter he’s disrespecting her life’s work. “Owe me sex?” That’s so bad.

There are also three I think importnant missing things in this video. Firstly, in that interview right after the incident which you saw, she was also asked if there are any hard feelings towards him and she said something like "I don't know him and I've never met him so....int:"were you a fan before" TS:"yeaah, he's Kanye West" int:"are you still a fan, I take it as a no" TS:"I don't know him and I don't wanna start anything, cause I just had a great night tonight", which just shows she was so much more grown up at 19 then he was at 32 (32 and still growing up now..haha, had to put it here). Secondly, in 2010 on her album Speak Now (rerelease July 7 this year, so excited) she had a song called Innocent in which she forgives him. Thirdly, in that phone call (which is literally 20 minutes of hell, like he is bursting with egoism and narcissism, she's uncomortable the whole time) I think it was after she said "that is not mean" after he read that line to her, she literally said something like "it's not like you called me a bitch or something" she literally said that THAT would be something she WOULD consider mean and hurtful to her

Especially for being a hormonal teenager bc I'm sure she was feeling turmoil. However, you see these actions as fake... I'd like to remind you that humans reflect how we perceive the world based on our experiences. So you're just projecting your emotions and tendencies onto her at this point. None of her actions have ever shown immaturity (if any, the only immature action I can think of is releasing Better Than Revenge, which she even admitted as she's extremely self-aware).

I'm so here for this journey and love how one of your swiftie followers did their swiftie thing so that you could really understand the era, lyrics, and meaning behind it all. Kanye has 24 Grammy's. A lot of people are quick to dismiss rap music but what Kanye has made is truly genius if you actually dissect his music and lyrics. It is extremely complex. Just one example: On his song POWER, he presents a macho/ego-driven character but the song breaks down as he reveals that he is struggling with suicidal thoughts despite displaying himself as someone on top of the world - The song was intentionally made in the key of C Minor, as a direct reference to Beethoven's iconic use of that key signature to represent dark and stormy sentiments for a hero. - He says "I got the power to make your life so exciting...so-exciting...suicide.... Now this would be a beautiful death, I'm jumping out the window, I'm letting everything go" which is a reference to Yukiko Okada, a singer who committed suicide by jumping to her death. Kanye sampled her song in his unreleased goodbye/suicide note-track "Never See Me Again" (Yukiko's suicide note ended with the words "I wanted to see him again") The casual listener would never even realize that Kanye has admitted to nearly killing himself after the 2009 VMA's on this track, you've actually probably heard it and never realized. Rap music is not just money and hoes believe it or not.

Art isn't just music, and when you factor in his impact in fashion there is no one that can challenge for the spot as the most influential artist of the 21st century

I think her best album is folklore, it has no skips, her best lyrics and good production (it’s actually not my favourite of hers but in general as an album it’s her best)

I love that she let him know she sold 7 million records before that award.

If you appreciate brilliant lyrics, Folklore would blow your mind...but I have to say, Reputation is my favorite. The two couldn't be more opposite imo... I have never been a TS fan girl. I knew about her, but was just annoyed by her I guess. Can't really explain it, but I highly recommend that you understand the progression of her work. Her lyrics, if you go back, have always been brilliant. FAR beyond her years when it comes to talent, maturity, and lyricism. When you listen, you will not be able to deny her talent. It's just impossible. I will say, after watching this whole video, Reputation is in response to this situation in addition to MANY others that she felt destroyed her rep. It's a brilliant response. She took a crappy situation and turned it into what will end up making her a billionaire.

I have never ever seen a superstar like Taylor Swift. She's talented, a genius, and gorgeous. She has all the qualities that a cool person should have.

Many layers, also from 2009 until present she was dealing with other issues both privately & publicly. Both parents dealt w/ cancer (mom- twice), other lawsuits challenging her integrity- SA & songwriting, multiple stalkers, being sued by a former manager & her love life under a microscope. Not sure how she does it.

Like the continued interview in 2009 right after it happened, her song innocent for him, the part of the phone call that she was happy he didn’t call her a bitch and he purposely put that line in the song to hurt her, the #taylorswiftisoverparty trend, her disappearance, the aftermath of the full call leaking and Kim saying Taylor is trying to reignite the feud, like how when it was someone on your team that leaked it cause y’all the ones who recorded it, etc….

I've worked in mental health, and don't like to make light of people with mental illness, but good grief, his behavior over the years. 😬🥴 you could probably make a top 25 list of cringe worthy moments for Kanye. I remember watching that 2009 VMA awards show in real time, not sure immediately what was happening, like a train wreck in slow motion, but when I went back and rewatched it on KZread years later, my heart broke a little for young Taylor in the context of her 19 year old self, getting her first VMA, as she's bursting onto the scene with her second album, Fearless. I watch the way her face falls in that moment, and she doesn't yet have the confidence and self-assuredness that came later after a few more years of experience and like 25 additional awards.

I truly believe Taylor IS the music genius, not him, but Kanye said he was, which is great personal branding, and by saying that, he made everyone believe that, he’s very good I won’t denied that but Taylor is way higher. The thing is Beyonce DID win the BEST MUSIC VIDEO, so Kanye was just a little too early to rain on Taylor’s parade which made me think it was pre meditated or he was obsessed with her idk. Taylor put the country as a genre as something international, which is truly something that was big in the US at the time, she made it worldwide, she change pop and put an 80s sound as the norm which lasts until today and you can hear it today in The Weeknd and Dua Lipa, she switched to indie-folk which inspired many other artists to try this approach so..

If I’m being honest, Kanye’s music is actually pretty good (well, some of his songs) But he’s a terrible person, from the “revenge” p0r3n music video, to the VMA’s situation. It’s all bad. I do, think we should be able to separate the artist from the music though. But, Taylor will ALWAYS be 10000x better then the man child that Kanye is.

I think dismissing Kanye's artistry is unfair when you think about his critical acclaim and the influence he's had on rap music wnd music as a whole. You thinks it's just 'okay' or you not seeing the 'appeal' doesn't change that. Kanye West the person is deserving of criticism, a lot of it in fact but as an artist he in singular in importance. It's also not lost on me that a white man is saying he doesn't see the appeal in a black rappers music, the jokes write themselves.

He's taken himself out of the running... It's tragic, truly... His refusal to treat his bipolar depression has ruined his life and the lives of the people who truly believed in him. He has never treated women outside his mother with any respect. Sorry, not sorry, he may be a legend but it's all infamy now. He made beautiful, human music that changed a lot.
