@@all_rc better than failsafes. cheaper too.

Spektrum receivers have two failsafe modes - SmartSafe and Preset. The default mode is SmartSafe where the throttle (hopefully) goes to idle and the flight controls hold their last position. In Preset mode, you hold the sticks in the position you want the controls (including the throttle) to go to during the failsafe. You do not need to re-bind the receiver simply because you re-trimmed the aircraft. Also, if your trims aren’t centered, you should adjust the linkages so that your plane flies straight with the trims centered (within a few clicks).

How do you change modes and do that preset?

Got it. So that's why my method still works. I rebind with the trims adjusted and it goes to preset mode. I was always told rebind to set the failsafe. But I don't really use Spektrum so I am not an expert.

@@all_rc Well, I should have read the manual before opening my mouth. 🤭 Actually, the failsafe selection process is like the "SAFE Select" process on BNF AS3X/SAFE receivers. If you use a bind plug, you pull the bind plug after powering up the receiver but before you bind the transmitter to it. That puts the receiver into the Preset failsafe mode and it will remember where the servos were when you bind the transmitter to it. If you leave the bind plug installed through the whole bind process, the receiver will bind in SmartSafe mode where the throttle will go to idle (or wherever it was during the bind) and the servos will stay where they were when the failsafe occurred. If you use the bind button on the receiver, you have to press it a second time before binding the transmitter to it to put it into Preset mode. Obviously, I've never used Preset mode since I've always used the standard bind process. Older receivers like the AR610 don't have a Preset mode; they stop sending control pulses to all of the servos except the throttle and it will go to wherever you had the stick during binding.

You also have the option, if the receiver isn't currently a locked BNF, to adjust the failsafe settings through forward programming. You can set each channel up individually from the transmitter for mode, preset value, etc. Obviously need a transmitter that can do forward programming for this.

@@shanesdiy Yes, I’ve seen that in my iX14 with Smart AS3X/SAFE receivers and I’ve mentioned it in my videos. I think it’s mostly for sailplanes. I’ve never had reason to use preset positions.

Can you please tell me if you need to update the Multi Lua even if using the Ethos Suite to update your radio. I have been using the multi.lua ever since Ethos introduced it but I have never updated it since. I'm I correct in thinking the Ethos Suite updates such files because I have other similar lua's installed on my radio like CRSF and Yaapu.

Ethos Suite does not update luas. You will need to update those separately. Ethos Suite does do a lot more than it used to. It now updates the internal protocol module which used to be a manual update but it does not do other things like the external module. You still need to update the firmware on that manually and any lua script you have.
