The Frsky Series: Setup E-Flite Bind and Fly Planes on your Frsky Ethos Transmitter

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Here is the process to set up an E-Flite BNF plane to your Frsky Ethos Transmitter. I used an E-Flite EC 1500 but the process should be the same for most of the E-Flite BNF planes.

    I have an ELRS module and receivers on order so once I get them, I'll do a video on them. You can use the Tandem receivers like the TD-R10 or the twin Lite TW receivers (need a module for the TW protocol to plug in the back for the XE, X20 and X18 series). But the newer X20 pro, Aerowing, X14 and the Twin Lite radios all have the protocol internally.) The tandem receivers like the TDR10 have 2.4ghz and 900mhz at the same time. The 2.4ghz is standard range while the 900mhz is long range. That's what I would use for long range right now and works with all Tandem radios like the X20s.

    Correct. It's just a 35 dollar module called iRange IRX4 Lite. Works well for Spektrum. Be aware, forward programming isn't functional yet. Telemetry works but not forward programming. It might even work for Futaba depending on which Futaba protocol you are using. I'm not too familiar with the Futaba stuff as the last time I used Futaba was back in the 72mhz days. But I believe they have some Futaba protocols in there. Check out my video on the multi protocol module installation when you are ready.

  • @all_rc

    @all_rc

    2 ай бұрын

    The XE is not good for thumbers. You need to pinch to use the XE. The sticks are too long and when you thumb, you should be able to grasp around the radio. Can't do that with a tray radio. You want the X18 or X20 series. The X20 has a few different variations. The regular ones are the X20 and X20s. They were the first radios in the tandem series. The other ones like the X20 pro and the X20 Aerowing are higher end radios. They have metal cases, flash memory storage instead of SD Card storage. Extra trim buttons, extra momentary switches and overall better quality and weight. The Aerowing version also has mechanical detents on the left slider so you can use it for flaps easier. I Believe the Aerowing version is designed for Turbine pilots. But in terms of number of channels and power, all their radios are basically the same.

I have many telemetry dsmx receivers, would this module also be able to read the telemetry? Also, I saw experiment where frsky range lasted to 5.7km while spektrum was 0.8km. So any idea if the frsky module used with the spektrum receivers, which range will prevail ?!

    Yes, make sure to update the firmware on your radio. V1.5 firmware and above allow spektrum telemetry to work. For your second question, the range would be spektrum range. You are emulating spektrum protocol so it would be spektrum range.

    Not yet. Forward programming functions aren't yet implemented. You can use an esc programmer or you can bind to a Spektrum transmitter and activate the thrust reverse and assign it to a channel. Once that is done, then thrust reverse will work with your Frsky radio.

    Just found your site. I'm trying to set up my AR631 with my X20/irx4 lite. My T-28 uses all six channels (flaps/retracts) and I can't seem to get the stabilization to work. Bound in SAFE, and non-safe but can't figure out how to get stabilization. Help!!

  • @all_rc

    @all_rc

    5 ай бұрын

    Your 6 channel receiver can actually use ch7 for safe select. Bind in safe selct mode (bind plug in, power up the receiver then bind plug out THEN bind with tx). Set your servo reversing so all surfaces are going the proper direction). Make sure your all your rates are at 100%. If your rates are not at 100%, the next steps may not work. Assign your designated safe switch to ch7. Now you can try the safe select dance they want you to do in the manual by putting your sticks to the inside bottom corners and rapidly toggling the safe select switch a bunch of times until you hear the surfaces move. That should be it. Just make sure channels are at 100% and the servo reversing is set properly. This is pretty much the process i used in the video. It should work.

    Thanks! I went thru the procedures and your video twice, it binds but still no stabilization. What is the date of the most current Lua script? Mine is 4 May 2023. All the control surfaces are correct, the throttle is on. This is most frustrating. I am seriously thinking of replacing the Spektrum receivers with FrSky ones; Perry, Ga Swap Meet is coming up in a month. I will be there and will try to sell all my Spektrum receivers and my DX9 and go all in with my X20.

  • @all_rc

    @all_rc

    Honestly not sure but when you download from the site, in the lua scripts section, you should get the latest version of the script. Make sure you are up to date with the firmware but besides that, i havent had any trouble. If you know someone with a spektrum radio, you can try the process on that radio and if it works, then when you rebind on to your frsky radio, the safe selct switch will function. Make sure to aux 2 (ch7) to safe select on the spektrum radio. When you do that process, it programs the receiver to safe select on ch 7 so when you rebind to frsky it should already be assigned.

    Any thoughts on FRSKY TD/TW receiver pwm output ranges vs DSMX? I just swapped out a DSMX receiver for a FRSKY one and found FRSKY has a wider PWM output range. Not noticeable on the centered channels (AER centered around 1500us) but very noticeable on the low end of the throttle. One e-flite ESC does not turn on until about 1200us and the FRSKY Rx goes all the way down to 980us. So there is a big dead band at the bottom of the throttle. Which I have compensated for but was wondering if you had dealt with this.

  • @all_rc

    @all_rc

    Ай бұрын

    Yeah, the range is more like 125% on Spektrum. Always do an esc calibration when changing transmitters... Even the same brand. I always bind then esc calibration. If you are unfamiliar, throttle cut off, throttle full on. Then plug in the receiver. Usually (depending on the esc manufacturer) Wait for a beep. Then throttle down. Once that's done. Throttle will be perfect for your transmitter.

  • @thomasedwards629

    Thanks, What I am seeing is the motor does not spin until about the throttle PWM is around 1145us for both spektrum and FrskyTW. My spektrum Rx throttle @ -100% output is ~1100us. But the FrskyTW throttle@ -100% output is 990us. So the ESC calibration doesn't help on the low end. As it seems the ESC 0 point is well above the 0 throttle for Frsky. I can put a curve on the throttle, but this seems a little odd.

  • @all_rc

    @all_rc

    Ай бұрын

    I have never had to adjust throttle curves or end points. Keep throttle at 100 and minus 100. Which is 990us on the low end for throttle or any of the sticks. Do the throttle calibration. I always do it. Especially if I have a Spektrum equipped BNF plane. If I don't do it, throttle doesn't activate until almost 1/4 throttle. Once calibration is done, throttle activates properly. Give it a try.

    @@all_rc Not working for me with Frsky. Fine with DSMX, but I'll keep at it. I found an e-flite esc manual that says the ESC pwm input range is between 1.1ms-1.9ms. In that case, with an Frsky TW receiver there will always be a dead-zone lower than 1.1ms (min of the ESC) and that is what I am seeing.

    Gains, with a regular spektrum transmitter, is adjusted by forward programming. Forward progra.ming is not yet impemented with frsky and the multi-module. Hopefully it will soon but not yet. Another limitation is telemetry. With the next major firmware update, telemetry will be available. So hopefully, forward programming is available soon.

    As3x works with Frsky. Programming as3x (forward programming), not quite yet. I believe that EdgeTX has forward programming sorted but Frsky, not yet. I assume in time. But my bnf planes from E-Flite work very well with Frsky. The telemetry issue I mentioned is taken care of with the latest firmware update. We now have telemetry support for spektrum. So your 30 planes with spektrum receivers should be fine. I have seen a few very old spektrum receivers not bind or have trouble binding but only a couple. And I did read an update that mentioned something about that but I haven't tested it since I personally have not had an issue binding with my spektrum receivers. So you shouldn't have too many issues running your planes with spektrum receivers on a Frsky radio with the IRX4 Lite module.

    Try a throttle calibration. Make sure throttle cut is off. Go full throttle. Then power up the plane. Wait a couple of seconds for the receiver to power up (usually 2 beeps but depends on the esc) and then throttle down. Fast beeps mean throttle isn't all the way down. If it is and you are getting fast beeps then your throttle calibration is way off.
