The Frozen Zone | 5 Best DeCluttering Tips for feeling Overwhelmed | Hoarding

As a Level 4 Hoarder, I was always stuck in the Frozen Zone! I never took any action in Decluttering bc I feared that I would make the situation worse. So I never decluttered and let the piles grow. After recovering from a level 4 hoarder to a level 1, I can confidently say these were the tips that helped me get over the fear and out of the Frozen Zone 🩵
1). Start with smallest room in house
2). You don’t have to Declutter Whole House Today
3). DeClutter the Easiest Thing First
4). Don’t force yourself to throw something out
5). Celebrate EVERY Victory

This week I organized a big decluttering day with my team at work. I called it a fall cleanup. We do training for all of the nurses and assistants at our large health system and so we’ve become overrun with medical supplies that we purchased or expired medical supplies from the hospitals, and it was just a disaster. We got rid of a ton of stuff and we are giving away some things to the local universities. It looks so much better and I think the team is really excited to keep cleaning! I took before pictures, and I am excited to show those to the team!

So true about not letting go of something you are not ready to let go of. When I’ve done that in the past I usually end of purchasing something and later realize it’s a self soothing thing, because I felt pressured. I’ve got a light at the end of the tunnel by using your techniques, however it’s a life long process just like healthy eating for a lifetime vs a crash diet.

PREACH! We all have a Frozen Zone of one kind or another! May I offer another hint? Don't be afraid to bring in help when you need it. I have neurological disabilities plus some aging issues (good ole' arthritis, etc.) Even though I can do most of the day-to-day cleaning myself, I have finally accepted that I can't clean my master bathroom or complete other "bigger" jobs consistently on my own anymore. Rather than live with mildew (ew...), I'm bringing in cleaners four times a year to get my house back to Square One. I feel better already. Whether you're hiring someone, bribing grandkids or asking family members for help, do it if you need to!

I've been working on getting rid of things since around the start of Covid, a few things at a time. I realized that I had to much stuff and that it meant some things (even someI liked) where going to have to go. The easiest things I got rid of quickly and easily, but what I noticed is as I went along I moved onto harder, and harder things making the things I was getting rid of more of a struggle. The surprise has been how some things I really struggled with getting rid of I haven't even noticed once I donated them. The struggle was often worse than the actual letting go, and often I didn't even miss the item I thought I couldn't live without. This is making it easier to have better perspective moving forward and realizing how important (or not) some of my possessions actually are.

Always look forward to your Friday videos! I can relate to the Frozen Zone. I have a lot of areas that are very cluttered. I don't like it, but I dont know what to do with it. Every weekend I take a run at it but it is like I just bounce off of it! Very frustrating!!!! I don;t even LIKE a lot of this stuff but I just can't seem to get myself to get rid of it and I don't know why! So that makes me think that I definitely have hoarding tendenancies. So......what I do besides not bring new things in is........peck away at it. I have thrown out most of the trash, so what remains is the stuff I don't know what to do with. .... I just peck away at it a bit at a time......a few minutes at a time.......and repeat, repeat, repeat. I will take a pile of 10 similar things and say, OK, out of this pile, what is the one or two things that I can live without. My fabric and crafts will be last! I appreciate your videos because it makes me feel like I can get there eventually. I want to get to a place that everything has a place and out of sight. I am a out-of sight; big category organizer. I forget which one that Clutterbug says that is, so when everything is out it feels like it is screaming at me!!!!

So true that doing the easiest stuff first helps! When you get to the point of using the basement space for an extra family room/game area like you mentioned years ago one cool idea would be since the areas on either side of the fireplace down there is set back farther is to make a secret door to get back to the space. A hidden door in bookshelves or something like that…. Would be so fun! The boys would love it too!

You've probably heard of "fight or flight" panic response but that's only part of the picture. It's actually "fight, flight, freeze, flop (feint), or friend (befriend the scary person or become something they value as a way of keeping yourself safe)". You can have any of these responses any time you feel panic

My ANTI-FREEZE TIPS 💪🎵⏲🤓📆🪴😃 1) Onion Method of easiest stuff first to build clutter muscles 2) Temptation Bundling with something enjoyable during/afterwards (game changing!) 3) Setting Process vs. Outcome goals so I always have a "win" ; - ) (e.g. "Look for things to let go of for X minutes on timer" (e.g. 5 to 15 minutes) vs. "Clear out closet") 4) Reminding myself that just sorting through items can be anxiety-SOOTHING because knowing what's there and taking action both make things feel less overwhelming (especially with a Process vs. Outcome mindset 5) Scheduling decluttering on the calendar with electronic reminders instead of waiting to be inspired (motivation usually comes *after* action, not before it : - ) I love Cas from Clutterbug's method of setting 3 reminders a day for just 5 minutes at a time of decluttering or cleaning so it's never overwhelming. : - ) 6) Starting with an area in my direct eye line from where I spend the most time so I'm constantly reminded that I've *already* made progress and can continue to do so. : - ) I also like to prettify it with a plant or picture or something to motivate me to *keep* it clutter-free. 7) Visualizing before I start how GOOD it will feel just to have taken action, and how GREAT it will feel when I'm all the way done! ; - D Dawn from the Minimal Mom and Cas from Clutterbug are good sources of inspiration about this! 😃❤🌈🏡💐

Such an amazing progress in your decluttering ! Thanks for the talk about taking baby steps in the process. I start my decluttering of items and get frustrated and scared afterwards I have donated items. Lots of so called thrift stores such as Goodwill and ARC in my city are overwhelmed with extreme amount of donated items that lots of the donated items that do not sell within 6 weeks are trashed out...and don't want furniture because the furniture takes up too much room in their store area. ARC has a machine in the alleyway behind their store that crushes up furniture that does not sell within the allocated time . I have hundreds of plush stuffed animals that I will have to trash out because stores don't want the stuffed animals...emergency services don't want the stuffed too. All of us need to really thing about what we purchase. Just look very hard on the weekends when there is a long line of cars lined up to donate items.

This video came at the perfect time for me. Your videos always inspire and encourage me, but this one spoke to my heart. I have just finished cleaning out my Mom’s estate and Uncle’s estate & sold both homes. I brought home more things than I should have, but things I really wasn’t ready to part with yet. Now my home which was already full is bursting at the seams. I have been staring at things and not knowing where to start. But I know if I just chip away at it little by little I will make progress. How many days a week do you declutter? And how much time do you spend decluttering per session? I have seen your amazing progress by using baby step decluttering and know it can work for me, too! Thanks for the videos and today’s incredible tips to get out of the Frozen Zone!

Hey Ms. Heart, could you please do a whole video where instead of showing us what you are decluttering, that you talk about the professional psychological support to mental enable you to do what you're doing now? Is it possible to have a guest on your show that is a psychologist or some other counselling professional that you could dialogue about the psychological journey either you've been on, or what someone needs to be willing to go on to physically recover from hoarding, one bin and one box and one tossy tossy pile at a time? I think that would help a lot of people, because I can see a lot of hoarders out there that would look at your videos and go "she can do it, but I'm stuck" without realising you've had a whole lot of professional support going on off camera. Thank you so much, I watch all your episodes! 💜

Great job for letting go of the baby gates! I know that must have been hard to do for you! This video was really needed because I’m struggling with feeling worthy and competent enough to go back to work because of some seismic level life changes. Also a thought on the laundry room video, maybe you can decorate and designate box/bins/totes that are tossy tossy, recycling or to go back down stairs so that your husband and your boys can help in a way that you have control over.

Well done again I think your efforts are amazing. I find little problem with decluttering my own things but other members of the family are a huge challenge. I will not declutter others stuff but when then they wont help what do you do?

I’m literally just texted my daughter to say I’m sitting in my living room trying to decide where to start after a busy couple weeks. Whole house seems to be a disorganized state

Are you going to have your yard sale or have to wait till spring?

Did you ever have the chance to do a yard sale? And do you think you will finish the basement this year? I know you have the holidays to prepare for too. We are thinking of doing a kitchen remodel during the holidays since we aren't hosting and maybe contractors will be more available.

Once you are done with the deccluttering, maybe you can decorate each section on a budget.

Imagine making souch progress that you have fewer personal items than your husband. Like both decluttering and crafting so much that you have fewer hobby supplies than him... When are you gping to make crafting videos again?
