Best video about the French subjunctive on KZread hands down! ❤❤❤ You literally go from A to Z with the French subjunctive 😊 Best French teacher ever! Thanks for all the time and effort you put into your videos and books! You rock! I do want to point out one thing though. At the beginning, you talked about the English subjunctive. You gave the example, “It’s time that she leaves.” That would actually be incorrect. The correct way to say that would be, “It is time that she leave.” No -s! In most cases, the subjunctive form of a verb is usually the third-person form of the verb with the ‑s dropped, but the verb to be is a special case. Basically the subjunctive mirrors the infinitive form of the verb in most cases. It’s only obvious that you’re using the subjunctive mood when you’re using the verb to be. The form of any other verb will remain unchanged. For example, “I request that you be there at 8 o’clock sharp.” It would be incorrect to say I request that you are there at 8 o’clock sharp. With all that being said, the subjunctive is rarely used, you will only see its use in very formal situations. In everyday conversation, English speakers will use an infinitive or a gerund instead of the subjunctive. For example, in natural conversation, I would say, “ It’s time for her to leave.” Instead of “It’s time that she leave.” The last one sounds way too formal. Sorry 😂 just wanted to share that because I love comparing English grammar/conjugation with Spanish and French❤ Anyway back to the main point…amazing video!!! Best explanation of the French subjunctive hands down! 😊

Thanks so much for this video. Bien fait! As a Spanish and Italian speaker, this does my head in because in Spanish the rule for the present subjunctive is: if the verb ends in -er or -ir, then the endings change to -a. If -ar, then to -e. In Italian, -are to -i or -ere, -ire to a.

Waouh! C'est invraisemblable! Merci pour votre réponse! Mais j'ai fait quelques recherches 1. L'imparfait du subjonctif Il est remplacé par le subjonctif présent ou le conditionnel. 2. Le plus-que-parfait du subjonctif Il est remplacé par le subjonctif présent, le conditionnel passé.

C'etait super (I need to figure out accents on my keyboard!) I feel like this is one of those things that I don't get fully but I will notice it now I have some awareness. I feel that I am a very slow learner and need lots of repetition, I love the idea that your books run alongside your lessons with exercises to complete! They all look so comprehensive and I'm still trying to figure out which book would be my best starting point! Thank you for such a detailed lesson

Madame Dylane, Infinite gratitude for your noble and hard work. I followed all your lessons from the alphabet until now that I only have few lessons to finish from your self study guide. I had studied all your lessons many times and I still diligently study for many hours every day 7 days a week. For this brilliant lesson I have a question, why is it that I am not able to see what is so different as you say in the verb ir grandir conjugation in the subjunctive present from the er conjugation verbs ? I keep pounding my head about it.

S'attendre à ce que = To expect that "S'attendre à" isn't correct so "ce que" is part of the verb in this case :)

Madame Dylane, the ne expletif does exist in Spanish and it is often used, it is of common use. And it does make sense when spoken. Just thought I should share this information.

It does yes. Here in your example, que isn't followed by subject + verb. The verb here refers to sur ce point. This type of structure is more advanced. But when accorder que is followed by subject + verb, it will be the subjunctive :) I hope it helps.

Salut Dylane, I'm just working through this amazing subjunctive marathon.🏃‍♂ I noticed at 25:05 you display the phrase "Que nous mouRRions". I don't think Mourir has a double R in the subjunctive. In the future simple and conditional yes, but subjunctive no. Tiny errors are bound to creep into such a huge effort.👷‍♀

Hi Dylane. After a number of sittings I have finally finished this lesson and I can say: c'était vraiment super.🏆 Now I have to get the book. There were only two sentences where the tenses seemed to be mismatched that confused me. Firstly at 53:23. "Vous étiez surpris que le colis n'arrive pas?" The main clause is in the past(imparfait) but the subordinate clause is in the present(subjunctive). In English this would be: "Were you surprised(in the past) that the package does not arrive(today in the present)". Does french allow this seeming mismatch of tenses. Could you write: "Vous étiez surpris que le colis ne soit pas arrivé" to make the tenses match. Secondly at 1:07:36. "Il avait déjà commencé avant que je ne rentre" = It had already started before I RETURN home. The sentence is talking about two things that happened in the past. 1. The thing that had already started and 2. The return home. But "rentre" is the present tense? Could you change the subordinate clause to: "je ne sois rentré(e)" = I RETURNED home. So both events are placed in the past. I've probably overlooked a simple explanation. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
