The FREE SPIRIT Hexagon Cushion: a Tutorial from The Last Homely House
As many of you who have been sitting on The Lime Green Sofa for a while will know, I have been working on a hexagon quilt for my Granddaughter Agnes since before she was born (she turns four this year!) And while many of the videos I have made in this time, to do with hexagons, have been tutorials - we thought some of you might enjoy a HEXAGON KIT in The Last Homely House shop!
So here it is - a Free Spirit charm pack, in one of 4 colour ways, with a pack of paper templates, a reel of Aurifil grey 50 weight thread, colour 2600 and a colourful booklet explains how to put your cushion together. All of these are packed into The Last Homely House Project Bag where you can store your hexagons when you are not working on them! Pop over to The Last Homely House shop to take a look, if this sounds like your sort of thing!

I just absolutely love your tutorials, projects and instructions!!! You have such an easy way of teaching your techniques and all the little idiosyncrasies that come with each piece!! Please keep showing us all your hobbies and ideas !!! I LOVE IT!!!❤️. And please do thank Kate and Rita for their assistance and support!!! “It takes a team to make the dream work”!!!
That yellow iron just makes me so happy! I mean I love ironing anyway, but to iron my work with a sunny yellow iron would just make me giggle! 🎉
I’ll probably never do EPP! Or even make a quilt. But i could listen to you talk, or teach, ANYTHING !!! For as long as you want to! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
The colorways of these fabrics are so refreshing. What a delightful idea for a kit. Thanks for sharing your creativity with us, Kate. Have a wonderful spring.
Я в восторге от ваших работ!!Мое признание!!!❤❤❤Россия,Санкт Петербург.
It has been a long week, and having a visit with you has ended it peacefully. The kits won't last long. The fabrics are yummy. Would love a peek into how your garden is growing. A waddle-by with Eileen would be the cherry on top. It has been a long week. Till we meet again, Kate. Have a great week too, Anna!

@@olgyone1195 I agree! While I enjoy the tutorials and inspiration , I miss the cooking, the chats, the errands into town and the cats and Eileen !!!!!
I tried to resist, but just placed my order for the blue/green kit! I'd also been wanting to order the window puzzle but was too stingy to pay the shipping for the puzzle, so I ordered both, puzzle and kit with free shipping, thank you so much for covering the shipping cost. I'm so happy to see you partnered with Free Spirit! Their headquarters are about 3 miles from my house here in Charlotte, NC! Thank you to Rita for including the QR codes, that's going to be an amazing help to get to the tutorials. I can't wait to start this!
Exquisite Kate! Each Hexi a dab ofJOY! You carried us through Covid and continue to inspire. A true treasure💕
What an awesome idea to have a kit that people can buy and watch this and make one with you. I'm in the process of moving all my crafting and sewing stuff to my new craft room or I would purchase a kit. I have so many projects already I need to finish. You are a joy to watch. Especially here in America with so much craziness going on in our government. I so enjoy watching your videos.❤
This is a great idea. I started a quilt because of you doing one. I had never heard of it. I love hand sewing in the evening. Beautiful fabric.
So delightful to see you at work Kate! You are a wonderful teacher!! Loved this video, as I do all of your videos!❤❤❤
Very lovely! Beautiful and handy kit! Thank you all for your work and sharing this video!
Loved watching you make a hexagon pillow cover. Beautiful.😊
The colours of the fabric is stunning, thank Kate for another great video
If I was ever able to come to the UK I would love to spend a day at your house with you.
I don’t even quilt, but still enjoy your tutorials. 😊
I love the fabric nice and bright colours thankyou for sharing your videos they certainly are very friendly creative ideas ❤ cheers 🥂 Kate

Thanks Kate- that is so wonderful, small project for beginners like me! Makes it more doable.
As always, I love your continuous , creative, colorful ideas that keep me inspired! Thank you & God bless.
Your Free Spirit Hexagon Cushion is beautiful. I also love the colors in those prints. I think I would have lined both the front and the back of the cushion to help make it stronger. Cushions can be mistreated sometimes.
January 31 2024 Maryland USA: Went to your shop and grabbed me two of the kits and still shopping at other treats to get. I love and support your channel because I get a hundred times more from such a lovely across the pond..Kate. Of course love watching the growth of Anna. She is truly a gem
Those are THE tiniest stitches I’ve ever seen!!!
I must say, I've never been excited about the Grandmother's Flower design with Hexi's; but when I saw Agnes' quilt I was fired up!! Just what I need, another project 😄 Thank-you for your inspiration Kate!!!! 😉💕🎉
Kate I again marveled at the beauty of Agnes' quilt. You did such a stellar job designing it. Those colors! Thank you for all the time you put into your video, love the inspiration. I may even begin cutting into my Kaffe Fasset fabric after years of hoarding/finding them. I broke through my barrier with my Liberty prints, using the scraps for hexagonal next. Enjoy your yard as spring breaks.
Such a great lesson, very clear instructions . I found watching this very relaxing Thank You.
Very enjoyable vlog, as usual, so lovely to spend a bit of time with you. Thank you 😊
I'm late watching your tutorial, I do enjoy watching you. You are a fabulous instructor! I just Love you ❤️
Love the colors and hexagons, too.
oooooh..... How absolutely GORGEOUS!!!! I remember when you started Agnes' quilt and I think your finest moment was when you removed the "eye"!!! To see you remove a hexagon from the center of a quilt like that was amazing! Thank you as always Kate! xxx

@@thelasthomelyhouse I'm so glad you shared it with us!!! Fearless sewing - that's what it's all about!! xxx
I purchased the red/pink kit as I have very little in that colorway. Then I watched this video. Since the fabrics for all the colorways each have a touch of each others colors, I think this cushion will look great with the other blue and green colors I use on my couch. Even though I have started a 1" hexi project, I wanted to get this kit to support Kate and her group who bring us these great videos. I can refill the kit and pass it to one of my little ones
I totally enjoyed watching you, Kate! Love the Kafe Fassett too- love his fabrics and designs with colors! Now I know how to make the cushion hexagons for sure- Thank you-! Kate- love your videos!🥰🙏❤️
I love watching your tutorials and chats it’s so calming I watch before bed 😊
I’m working a quilt project that requires 846 one inch hexagons, all hand-basted with silk thread, and hand- stitched with the same silk thread- it’s strong and so fine, it disappears. Hexi’s are so addicting!! I’m already think about my next project!
Hey Kate, I "chickened out" and used the thirty blocks for the hexagon pillow to put together a small quilt. I combined the squares with an orange "chalked" fabric. I did try to put similar designs, i.e. polka dot, at a diagonal....so there would be some semblance of order. I loved seeing you with Arne and Carlos!! What a treat!! Gosh, I couldn't remember your grand darling's name. Hope I will be a member of your group. Sending love from Pennsylvania, U.S.A.🧵🪡🧶
Another lovely kit from Kate! ❤
Your cushion cover is beautiful ❤
Feeling just a bit silly right now realizing that I didn't need a Sizzix cutter or hexagon templates to cut my bits of fabric! For those of you with 1" paper hexagon cutouts, and want to use your own fabric or bits from your fabric stash, I just cut 2 3/4" strips, then cut the strips to make 2 3/4" squares...and MAGIC! I have the perfect sized fabric pieces I need to start sewing my hexagons!
Beautiful!❤
Thankyou Kate. I’m thinking of making a cushion. I think I’ll line them though, to make it stronger. My grandkids aren’t kind to cushions! 😍🇦🇺
Kits are beautiful. Kate thank you ❤
Last year I made a hexagon cushion cover . I was inspired by one of your EPP videos, It was my first , and only one so far , project with English Paper Piecing. Around many exagons the stiches are well visible, but nobody seems to notice it except me !
Hi Kate and everyone on the Lime Green Sofa , like Diane i had never heard of Hexagon paper sewing until you started making Agnes quilt i sit in the evenings making them hopefully will have enough in time to make a single quilt, the colors are beautiful and the cushion will brighten up any room Thanks Kate.
Oh what a treat Kate! I watched your video while I was having my porridge and first cuppa of the day! The colours are utterly glorious! Watching your hands, I couldn’t kelp reflecting on all the wonderful things that they have created over the years - what a tale they have to tell! Thank you again my friend! X
We are buying an RV end of summer to travel for fun in the US. I knew I wanted to start hand-sewning (I will still take my machine and crochet projects) and EPP Hexies have been constant in my thoughts... now you've got my juices flowing again. I think will start with learning the basting system... you have been such incredible instructor. Thank you Kate for peaceful personality and style... ❤

That would be a great idea, my hubby and I go camping. We only go out for a few days at a time, don't want to drag my sewing machine along, but I just realized that hand quilting something would be perfect for me. I am a new quilter, Feb this year, and don't know anything about hand quilting but want to learn. Thanks for posting a comment it's great inspiration.
Lovely colours, and beautiful music👌🤗
Such a beautiful pillow! Red is my favorite!
I’ve always been a gluer, but now that I’ve seen your technique up close I want to try thread basting. Thanks for this detailed tutorial- the cushion cover is beautiful! 😻
@HRHDMKYT

I thread baste without putting my needle through the paper templates. If you punch a hole in the template before wrapping the fabric around it and thread basting each corner, it’s super simple to remove the templates when the time comes, using a crochet hook, stiletto, or other pointy object. This makes my templates re-usable many many times over! (I punch mine out of cardstock flyers I continually find in my mail, so they’re free. Fiskar’s XL hexie punch has 1” sides, which are the size Kate uses here - and in Agnes’s quilt).
Every project you do is a work of art! Thanks once again for sharing your know how and beautiful ideas!
Love the cushion, Kate. So pretty!❤
Oh my goodness! This is so inspiring, Kate! And I already have all the materials in my stash - a Kaffe Fassett Free Spirit jelly roll AND a 10" charm pack (what I would call a layer cake) of The Kaffe Fassett Collective. Can't wait to get started!
I love the hexagon quilt you did for Agnes!
Love your cushion, always great to watch you doing your crafts. Love Barbara❤❤❤
Thank you for being so inventive to keep us doing something new. Love your ideas. I started my sister on hexagons which she made a cushion for her rocking chair and got more ambition and made a chair back. Now she is making table runners and maybe she will make a quilt later. I had her find you one her computer and fallow you as she continues on with her projects.
I would love to get that but can't afford it so I can't afford it so I keep watching that everyone's going them thank you for sharing lots of loving dogs to you and your family if they safe and be careful out there and happy happy sewing🩵🩵🙏🙏😍😍
I so enjoyed this video. Well I love them all but this one showed me how to sew those edges together! I could sit and watch you all day!! Thanks
Received my kit in today's mail, Kate. Thank you so much. I've never tried EPP so i am really looking forward to learning how.
Thank you Kate ! Love your videos, you also inspired me to make an EPP quilt for my granddaughter
Such a good quality tutorial! Beautiful fabric choices! 🦌💌❤️🪡🧵
You inspired me to try this, and I'm still working on my first design. It keeps growing, I love it very much. I have a bunch of 5" squares in the same colors but a different design, and will make the back. How amazing you are showing me how to do this! Mine is 3/4" hexis.
These EPP kits will certainly be a jumping off point for several people. I’ve been doing EPP for several years. One inch are always my go too. ❤️
Inspired by Agnes' quilt, last year I sewed a humungeous stash of liberty hexis but dumped the project as I felt totally overwhelmed. Thank you so much Kate for this video. Now I know what to do with them ! Bisous from the French Pyrenees xxx
Very nice
Hurray! I think this is such an exciting beautiful project. When I am able I will be buying these kits. I'm glad you listened to your Creative Spirit ❤ Thank you for sharing your joy and a glorious way to show our love. Sincerely, Anita
Kate I enjoy you so much.how you explain and your colors.makes me think I can you more color in my quilts. Bless you
You have chosen fabrics from my most favorite designers!!! Now, the hard part is going to be choosing which color way to get.
I have finished the beautiful blue cushion, I love it. The fabric is so great and bright. I just stared another blue one and I have fabric for two more cushions in the green. I can’t think you enough for the instructions and your videos and the booklet helped me do a very good job of the cushion. I am so happy . I have waited for over 10 years too afraid to do them. Thanks to you I am doing hexagon for anything I can , I love making them and using in a number of projects. Now I have the love of making hexagon. It is amazing and so fun. And very realizing to me. Again Thanks for teaching me and I am at ease with them. Much love and be happy.
Once again lovely to watch and visit while i knit on my sweater. I’m about to start the shaping for the arms! I’m thinking your kit will be a lovely mother’s day gift for my sisters…
I really enjoy watching your videos. You inspire me to do more. Thank you.
This kit looks well thought out. Love the color options.
The kits sound beautiful and it's great to start off small ❤😊
Nice project very pretty.
Just love watching you create. GOD Bless!
What a fun idea! And a lovely intro to EPP; the project is small enough to be done in a short time while learning all the skills.
You have such a lovely podcast. You are a wonderful and delightful person and so easy to watch. Thank you!
Beautiful fabric... And your work too... ❤
Hi Kate, those pillows are magnificent! I have a ton of Kaffe/Free Spirit fabrics. They make me so happy! I also love the quilt you made Agnes. She's a lucky girl indeed! xxx
Colours are stunning ❤
Lovely pillow. When you were sewing the two pieces together, I noticed your stitches were a bit loose. You may need to check the tensions on the machine.

Yes, it looks as if the upper thread isn't engaged in the upper tension disks. Lift the presser foot and snug the thread into the disks and/or re-thread the upper thread. 😊 It could also be that the bobbin thread is not in tension slot either. Make one adjustment at a time and all will be well. 😉
Beautiful cushions xx

Lovely Kate! Great lesson!!❤️
I Hexagon all the time. Love it! I like to use a small crochet hook to remove the paper pieces. Size 4 or E. I never have to worry about damaging the fabric as I remove the papers from finished hexi's.
Ordered a red/pink kit and just watched this video. What a great idea Kate, Anna and Rita! Absolutely love this.❤
Just got to watching this video, and coincidentally I'm making a hexi quilt at the moment! Love the fabrics and Agnes's quilt is beautiful 😍
I have watched many tutorials in reference to the hexagons. All was out of working order. Now i ubderstand! You are a gem!!
Beautiful, as always, Kate!
Another great job! Thanks for sharing- excited to make one 😊
Happy Mother's Day Beautiful Kate! And your beautiful family as well!!!❤
Thank you for showing me how to construct this cute little cushion. I have bought it from the shop but as I have never sewn much since School, I may gift it an Auntie who quilts and just stick to the knitting. Thank you 😊
I miss you Anna she's such a sweetheart.
Always lovely to start the week with a video Kate ! ❤
I may never make a hexie quilt, (too many other quilts planned), but I love your very peaceful and educational videos. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God."
Beautiful !!! Thank you for sharing 🪡🧵♥️
Your pin cushion kit from last year (maybe year before) was my introduction to EPP. I’m excited to get this new kit and try something larger. Thank you Kate!
So beautiful…love all the colors! Can’t wait to get mine! ❤
What a fabulous idea, Kate..thank you. I have admired the quilt you made for Agnes ever since I first saw it, but I was overwhelmed by the enormity of it, however, the kit you have all come up with seems completely doable. Well done.! Now, what color to choose. 🤔 a tutorial to go with it?? BRILLIANT!
Kate,, your focus and patience continue to astound me. Switching back and forth between hand stitching and machine sewing is a challenge. Thank goodness for irons!
My goodness, I just adore your work, Kate!
Finished my pillow. My first hexie project. The color brings me joy!
