At one point in this game, you have a fight against two minotaurs at once. When you beat them, you unlock the achievement "DouBull TrouBull". Only a few seconds later, you unlock another achievement, "I Owe You an Apology", where the lead designer apologizes for the terrible pun. Why can't more games have fun with achievements like that?

Facts this was my favorite game type especially with the title music and the lab sequence where you can just sandbox and send monsters to an arena to fight each other. Honestly god tier for that

Compared to most games, Legendary isn’t anything too special. Compared to Turning Point: Fall of Liberty, it deserved to win game of the year.

My thoughts exactly. Legendary had a whole lot more depth and polish when it came to the gameplay mechanics and story lore than Turning Point.

It just occurred to me that we don't really get much middle-market trash anymore. Grey-brown FPS games might have been the Swan Song for that genre of game, because it's all either AAA or Indie now, very little in between. It's pretty sad

I miss the company sponsored games. 🤣 the stuff sold specially in certain outlets and end up in the bargain bin after a year of shelf life. The ones that get bought because grandparent misheard the title of the game and got "half strife: uncharted" that sounds real... it hopefully isnt.

there's still plenty of AA games, just look at thq nordic and how many studios they own, most of them are AA. They just don't make these shitty grey and brown uninspired shooters anymore.

I actually really like this game. Would like another FPS like it with a government agency fighting monsters. Like Hellboy but you are human.

Still, it would be nice if we got the Astra Militarum treatment of just playing as a regular bloke with a weapon and a mission, fighting against enemies for whom that may not be the gest equipment to fight against. There is just something inherently fun about the concept of fantasy meets reality.

If you can deal with the motion controls, you may like The Conduit games for Wii. It's a duo of FPS games where you play as a government agent with an alien artifact called the All Seeing Eye (ASE) and you fight aliens and otherworldly creatures invading earth.

Funny enough I made my final year game project based on this game. I loved the concept of the mythical beasts when I played it but the weapons, combat, level design and plot all sucked. So I made a small chunk of what Id have loved the game to have been. It's not polished but I loved making it and I'm thankful for Legendary inspiring me.

@@KommandoLando Well I do have a sort of vertical slice I could show people. I like to consider it about 1.5 levels because it ends with a more amphoteric moment. It also goes for a more over the top tone. Legendry's mythical beasts were what I took interest in but never cared for the plot so in my version the main enemy of the game is a gryphon. The game play is also more like dusk as it's faster paced.

there's a possessed soda machine in this game? that's game of the year material right there.

Not gonna lie, if there was an open world game set in mildly destroyed NYC where it is infested with dangerous folklore creatures would be dope.

The magazine ads for this game were the coolest thing ever and what pulled me in. It's a shame it never got a sequel.

I'm 100% sure that the pyramid golem thing was concept art for the Egypt level but had to be cut

I actually like that game, Clive Barker's Undying is a way better game though.

As a child I loved this game along with Homefront. Simple times that made young me enjoy simple games

I really wish this concept could have been executed in a modern, more well put together, game. This game is still fun imo, and it was crazy cool back when I was a kid (2008'ish)

just wanna point out that even though this game isnt "good" by community standards, i still remember most of the game over a decade later, i cant even remember what the last COD's plot is. The industry really is starving for unique and fun ideas like this.

Someone should start a company that mainly just remakes shitty old games that had creative but poorly realized ideas and remake them to be good. Obtaining the rights would probably be the hard part, but I think it would be a good idea. Someone who understands coding and stuff should do that

This game still holds a special place in my heart. The guitar rifts, the dynamic intro, and the environments! Yeah it's janky but it's a pretty fun game if you don't take it serious :P

Man, I remember frequently visiting this store as a kid, that sold movies and games. The owner was the only employee, and would just sit there, playing said games/watching movies all day, until a customer shows up. Sometimes I would just chill there with him, talking about upcoming releases or co-oping split-screen. One of the times after school, I stopped by to see, if there’s anything new to watch/play, and he suggested Legendary, but also went “it’s not good, but there’s good ideas, and its concept is cool.” That’s exactly, how I felt about it upon playing. Never even finished it, actually, but it still remains in my memory as “what-could-be”. Good times.

Finally! Hell yessss. Been suggesting this for the past year.

GTA 4, Left 4 Dead, Mirror's Edge, COD World at War, Fallout 3, Gears of War 2, Far Cry 2, Bioshock, Dead Space, Saints Row 2, Armored Core: For Answer, Prince of Persia... The last quarter of 2008 was packed with absolutely stellar games. Legendary is a 6/10 that people treat like it was a 3/10 because it came out at an unfortunate time.

EDIT: The minotaur part made me remember that on the Xbox 360 version when you beat the 2 minotaurs you get an achievement with a pun name for like 1 gamerscore, then you immediately get another one with the rest of the gamerscore that apologizes for the bad pun. And because Oboe is a huge fan of bad puns, I imagine that would have gained an extra point at least. Then maybe been immediately docked it for reminding him of how gamerscore existed and how people were obsessed with it. Yoo I played this game when I was 10 when it came out. Then my parents saw the train car of bloody corpses and decapitating werewolves and made me play spyro instead. Little did I know they were just trying to save me from mediocrity.

My favorite thing about this game is the bug at the very end of the game that makes you fall through an elevator, preventing you from ever finishing the game, and the fucked up ragdolls.

Me and my brother used to play those old ps2 demo discs a lot and lengendary was on there and being little kids who hadn’t really been exposed to much more than ssx tricky, medal of honour and Rayman, getting thrown into a destroyed city full of the monastery’s from our literal nightmares was genuinely fucking terrifying.
