I personally find this one to be extremely underrated. It’s pretty predictable and a bit dull at the beginning, but it’s a character-driven story with one of my favorite Disney endings of all time. I’d give it a B

Giant monster bear scared me to death as a kid. Did you know Tim Burton worked on this movie? One of his first projects. I've loved this movie since childhood, though it hits differently since I lost my best friend. The goodbye scene kills me now.

After Disney's death, times were... emotionally rough for the studio. But they still managed to pull through to keep his legacy alive and turn his final dreams into reality. Even at the animation company, while they definitely missed having their boss around to add his unique magical touch to their movies, they were still able to make some successful animated movies. Granted, they weren't as successful as the ones that were made back when Walt was still alive, but they did well enough to keep the company afloat. However, once the 80's came into play, changes became... unavoidable. The 9 Old Men were retiring and were going to leave the legacy of Disney Animation in the hands of new animators. And those animators were eager to work their magic. But when they entered the studio with their pencils ready, what they didn't realize was that not only was Disney Animation going through a major change, but the entire company was about to get some new leaders. However, before they met their new bosses, they must start on their first film that fully displayed their talents. And this was that first film.

This movie was actually Wolfang Reitherman's idea. He read the 1967 novel of the same name and that gave him the inspiration to want to make the film. So he started production of the movie in 1977 as director, alongside animator: "Art Stevens". However, both Art and Wolfgang got along the same way a real fox and a real hound would get along. They were constantly butting heads with each other over certain scenes. For example, since a lot of the dark tones of the original book had to be altered in order to make it more suitable for a Disney flick, and in the original book, Chief actually did die when he got hit by the train, Art made Chief survive and just have the broken leg. While that made the animators upset because they felt it took away from the emotional impact, it remained in tact in the final movie. When it was time for casting, the crew had a good idea on who they wanted for the movie. For the role of: "Big Mama", they wanted: "Pearl Bailey", making Fox and the Hound her final film role. Originally, Widow Tweed was to be voiced by: "Helen Haze", but instead they got: "Jeanette Nolan". The film was also the last animated Disney movie that the 9 Old Men ever worked on. Wolfgang eventually quit as the director (although he did receive producing credits), and his position was taken over by: "Richard Rich", while Frank Thomas contributed to the animation until the end of 1978. As the old animators were out, the new animators stepped in to fully take over the studio. While some were already at Disney working on The Rescuers, Fox & The Hound was the first time they were in charge of an animated movie, without the help of their old mentors. These new animators included: "Glen Keane", "Ron Clements", "John Musker", "Mark Dindal", "Mike Gabriel", "Chris Buck", "Brad Bird", "Henry Selick", and "Tim Burton". It was originally meant to come out on Christmas in 1980, but instead ended up being released on July 10th, 1981. The critics liked it and loved the animation and voice acting, but felt that it wasn't on par with the Disney films that were made back when Walt was alive, due to them playing it too safe. The box office reception was definitely better, as the movie ended up making $40,000,000. While the film tells the story of two best friends who are told by society that they should be enemies, it was a moment in Disney history while the old masters had to pass on their baton onto a new generation of animators. As time went on, The Fox & The Hound, was the end of an era.

This film really does feel like an end of an era for old disney. Not only this was the last film the 9 old men ENTIRELY worked on before retiring but it was the last film to feel like a classic Walt Disney animation film.

Plus maybe after you get done with your Disney review retrospective series maybe you could do a ranking on all the Disney animated movies from worst to best.

Good idea. Maybe rank the individual eras first, then rank them all as a whole?

I definitely cannot wait to see your review for The Black cauldron because it is considered the one that almost killed Disney animation and also it is considered Disney's biggest box office bomb. The movie did had good ideas in it but it was executed very poorly.

The Fox and the Hound was good, I had it on VHS and I revisited it this year on Kurt Russell's birthday.

This and a couple other films from the 80s are what I remember watching a lot through K-5-3rd grade. Speaking of Chief, he actually died in the book this is based on and I do wish Disney went forward with it. It does need a rewatch since its been forever since I saw it.

I think Chief didn’t die because they didn’t want a PG rating

I thought it was pretty good but Mickey Rooney’s voice as a young fox is really jarring. Like why’d they make Tod sound so old lol

If you are going to rank all the Disney animated movies from worst to best I would want you to rank the eras of Disney animation first then you can rank all 59 Disney animated films from worst to best as a whole. After you get done with your Disney animation retrospective.
