The Forward-Handled Recurve Pt.1

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A) I wanted to make a recurve...
B) I was requested to make a handle-forward bow...
C) Why not kill 2 birds with one stone..?
Made with a Hickory belly, Bamboo back, and Purple Heart accents in the riser. I cover the belly prep including the steam bending, the construction of the handle forward designed power lam turned riser, and the laminating process. Here is the resulting build...

I have read before that hickory doesn’t work very well to add a bamboo backing to. Yet, I’m seeing it more and more. You’re an awesome bowyer! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Thank you for watching! And Hickory is such an underrated bow wood… it just needs to be real dry and or heat treated/tempered.

Nice! In my experience bows with forward handle are more forgiving

I like the look of a handle forward bow. Hopefully, it helps with the recurves.

Nice piece of eye candy there! I have used toothpick technique for self bows 'cause my riser parts liked to slip/slide away.

What are the pros/cons of a recurve bow as you are making in this series vs. a reflex deflex bow ( you have made in a past series)? I’m interested in performance characteristics, more so than construction characteristics. The reason I am asking is that my next bow was going to be a reflex/deflex , but now that you are doing this, I’m wondering if I should build a recurve? Thanks

You ask a simple question, but have effectively opened a big can of worms… There is no right answer to your question, only a series of trade-offs made to arrive at the bow you decide to shoot on any given day. Well made, both of these designs will shoot an arrow at similar enough speeds, but that’s about where the similarities end. Recurves can be shorter, and easier to maneuver in the field. On the margin their length can give them an arrow speed advantage as well, but in my opinion, that’s where the advantages end. They are more difficult to construct than a straight limbed bow - which is an important factor in my opinion. Straight limbed bows also send to be more stable on the shot and are widely considered to be more consistent and accurate shooters for that reason. A Perry reflexed R/D bow has the best mix of properties in my personal opinion. They can be shortened a bit and shoot real fast without sacrificing stability - my choice all day, every day. Recurves sure are pretty though, aren’t they?!!
