Actually it isn't far fetched to say it was the "Cancel Culture" explanation, they did the same thing to Notch and having removed all mention of him from Bedrock (not so sure about CE) because of his political views that he openly expressed on social media.

The athlete Steve was my favorite Steve skin when I played on the Xbox One edition and I remember it correctly, right now I made an updated (JAPPA style) version of this Steve as my Java edition skin. I guess the reason why it was removed is because they thought it was a stereotype, it did look more like a rapper or probably was considered racist, but they really need to bring back this skin, including the athlete Alex.

It's nostalgic at least for me I miss the old Skin because Minecraft Bedrock was Different in 2014 it had the old Steve or maybe it was an older Version. And I don't know if you agree but Minecraft Sucks Nowdays I the old one I dowloanded an old version in my phone but it just did not feel the same

I think because of the lack of detail on the skin and the current climate of online culture. Minecraft just decided it to be better to remove him in the bedrock edition of the game.
