    Many will say that Tarkin was a genius, but I say that is a overstatement. True his doctrine was affect if the Galactic Empire was at war with another Galactic Government or State, but in truth it was his doctrine that doom the Galactic Empire from the start. After the Clone Wars was over many wanted peace, but since the Tarkin Doctrine demanded that the military uses overwhelming force to destroy any enemy force it will bring seeds of rebellion with the needless destruction and death. Tarkin was a great general in times of war, but he singlehanded doom the Galactic Empire with his overwhelming might, brought hatred for the Imperial forces, and a massive burden for the Galactic Economy.

    I can see that point, and for the most part the empire did bring peace. Well other than the outer rim and parts of the mid Rim. I think Doctrine would have worked perfectly fine if they never fired the Death star on one of the most beloved planets in the galaxy. Many would have never rose up and the Rebellion will have a hard time getting people the fight for them.

    Personally I agree that the tarkin doctrine was flawed in the same way, in that someone like thrawn had a better idea. He was smart and thought that a large fleet of star destroyers with effective fighters could be much more effective and safe than a massive super weapon

    The Rule of Fear works as long as the people are more afraid of resisting than they are of being ruled. With the introduction (and use) of the Death Star this was no longer the case. Had they not made that step, the Empire would have done much better.

  • @xinimaru7200
    @xinimaru72003 жыл бұрын

    For a time, the Tarkin doctrine was effective. It is essentially built on fear and deterrence. However, you scare people too much, that fear will boil into rage. And as we saw with the first Death Star, deterrence became a joke. Thrawn saw this coming, hence why he went with the new fighter project, the TIE Defender. But sadly, thanks to an inept Governor, those plans were torn asunder. Thinking about it, how better would the Empire had fared if they had abandoned the Tarkin Doctrine when it was no longer useful, and changed to the methods of Grand Admiral Thrawn?

    Fear has the issue of locking you into a course of action because you know your enemies will only respect you as long as they fear you. Thus, the second you appear weak you will likely be either openly attacked or stabbed in the back by people who now feel emboldened by the ability to kill what they fear, and this requires you to push the boundaries ever upwards, until you become a caricature of yourself only interested in looking as fearsome as possible. From a certain point of view, no matter how self assured you are looking at that point, you are the one most ruled by fear of them all.

    The problem with the Tarkin doctrine, and Tarkin in general, was that he ruled only by fear, which does not work, because the moment you show any weakness, any reason at all not to fear you, it's like Pandora's box, there's no closing it. You have to use a little kindness, trick the citizens into thinking you care, even if it's not true. If they think that even if they follow all the rules there's still a chance they could be killed just because someone in high command was bored, they will find a better solution as soon as possible

    The problem I have with the empire's power in various media is that it is always said how powerful are the weapons capable of conquering entire planets, how brilliant it is to create a Star Destroyer with firepower to melt a moon and still be fast to the point of chasing smugglerships, and how terrifying is the idea of a Manhattan-sized ship capable of controlling an entire sector as it has been since the empire emerged, if soon afterwards only the main player or character of the plot appears that enemies start to destroy Super Star Destroyer by squeegee, capture a lot of ISD, blow up another lot. What it looks like in reality is that everyone has lost their fear of the empire because they destroy its symbols all the time by the thousands. Winning the empire's machines is such a action that every game or comic writer tries to do it with as many imperials as possible.

  • @BaxterAndLunala
    @BaxterAndLunala6 ай бұрын

    There are many ways to turn the Tarkin Doctrine, the Empire's greatest strength, into it's biggest weakness. For instance, Star Destroyers have heavy shielding and firepower, but they're slow as a result of all that armor being built in. If an opposing force has over 20 frigates going against 2 Star Destroyers, the frigates are more likely to come out on top. If those same frigates are backed up by several carriers, the amount of fighters would be enough to harass the two Star Destroyers and fend off their compliment of TIE Fighter squadrons at the same time. The Tarkin Doctrine early on might've been useful, but it over time became a liability.

    Speaking of Tarkin, I wonder what the story of the Tarkin family is after the fall of the Empire. Tarkin was a respected, iconic and loyal Grand Moff within the Empire, but outside the Empire he was infamous, especially after the destruction of Alderaan. I can imagine his reputation and all that he had done dirtied his family name, a family name that was surely well respected during the days of the Republic and that of the Clone Wars.

Or any other era of warfare if you're feeling creative. What strategies, tactics, and doctrines could translate into 40's technology, which ones can't, what roles would certain notable star wars commanders take/how the factions of star wars would react to the factions of our own world's past, and how could they compare to the real world commanders of the war? Anyone is free to comment in this thread.

    Tarkin was involved in the initial designs, which I believe he handed to Mr. Sienar (the guy who made the company that made TIE fighters, among other things) in exchange for inclusion in a secret club that Palpatine had made. Anyway, this was before the start of the Clone Wars. These designs were then passed to Palpatine, who passed them to Dooku, who had Separatist engineers work on it--it was nowhere near complete by then--before handing a more polished design back to Palpatine at the outbreak of the Clone Wars. Eventually, Tarkin would be placed in control of the Death Star project much further down the road, and probably oversaw some more modifications (and overlooked at least one more--some random architect who was enslaved and then sent to work on the Death Star decided that having a particle shield and a ray shield over a particular exhaust port was redundant and removed the particle shield to save money), but he at the very least saw the designs before any modifications were made at all, and probably helped create them.

    Basically whenever anyone points out how something is dumb or impractical in the Empire the Tarkin Doctrine is used as the excuse. The real reason is the creators just did stuff that looked cool then when people thought about them they made no sense. Things like making your fleet out of Imperial II Star Destroyers that have small hangers and no point defense when you are fighting an enemy whose main strength is fighters, building the Death Star when a fleet can already glass a planet, making yiy main ground armour walkers that have a massive profile, a bad field of fire and can fall over. Obviously in universe they should have listen to Thrawn instead and the Imerials would have had more ships, better fleet composition and better fighters and no big targets for the Rebels to destroy.

    You know, I still believe the Republic could have been saved by stopping Palpatine if are boy Fives didn't die, but it seems like every time are boy Geetsly's talks about the Republic during the Clone Wars and how it was slowly becoming the empire well before episode 3 kind of weakens that belief. But you gotta admit, they may be complete bastards, but Palatine, Tarkin, and the like were pretty ingenious with all of this and how patient they were to pull it off.

    It's purely idiotic as a strategy. You're not just inviting rebellion with something like this, you're absolutely forcing it. If you can't maintain any level of trust, and you wield unimaginable destructive power, the only thing more suicidal than attacking said power... is not attacking it. I mean. Who the hell knows what you'll do with it and when? Who the hell knows. No one's going to wait around and find out that's for sure.

    I agree with Tarkin's approach. Cause enough fear in the enemy and you have to take fewer lives. It's pure utilitarianism. That's why the Night Haunters are my favorite space marine chapter. If torture, defile, and disfigure a small proportion of the population you save lives because the rest will be too afraid to try anything. Why do you think criminals were publicly tortured, executed, and defiled posthumously throughout the medieval era. Now because the law has becoming increasingly toothless, people kill each sensely other at a horrendous volume. Look at the deaths racked up every weekend in urban centers like Chicago. But his overreliance on a single project was foolish. He was too invested in the Deathstar.
