The Forest: Putting the Survival into Survival Horror

So the forest is the pinnacle of early access survival games and spookiness where you crash land on a mysterious peninsula where a bunch of mutants don't seem to be too fond of your presence. Where even are you? Who are these mutants and why are they here? What's the story behind the forest and who are the Sahara Laboratories???
The Forest is one of the best times I've had getting spooked while trying to craft a huge base and exploring the caves is almost like and entirely different game. I'm pretty hype that the forest 2, called "Sons of the Forest" is coming out this year (there's no real release date though)
• Sons Of The Forest Tra... Here's that trailer we all saw at The Game Awards if you missed it.
• Sons Of The Forest Tra... Also here's the trailer that didn't get spread around so much too. looks like our shopper definitely got taken down by a creepy mutant.
Okay if you read this far down, tell me sometihng: Am I the only one who always assumed ham hocks mean using the scraps off the bone of a spiral sliced ham for ham hocks n' beans? I had no idea that the ham hocks were an actual part of the pig until a couple years ago. Who would buy a sperate part of the big for a dish traditionally meant to recycle scraps of food!?!?!

    I just want to point out how genius the mechanic of the cannibals dragging you to the caves actually is. Not only is it a great way to force the players hand and introduce them to the caves and throwing them in deep water, it’s not only terrifying, but it’s also a great way to get around a ‘game over’ screen. Tension would be immediately lost once you realise you just hit ‘load last save’. Sure you still understand they are a threat, more than ever now that the mystery of fighting them is gone, but that mystery is what keeps it unnerving.

    Okay, for going through forests, you need to make sure you have a machete, in case you get tangled up in branches and stuff. Also an older style hockey mask, because there are always branches just at head height that will get you in the face if you aren't protected. Lastly, you should go at night. You can go during the day, but trees have terrible night vision, so it's just safer for everyone involved.

Is really nice to see how people in other countries work in the kitchen, your dish make me remember a dish my mother make from time to time named "frijol con puerco" or translated in english, pork and beans, unlike the american one this is made with black beans and the meat is really tender, great video as always.

  • @stuglife5514

    @stuglife5514

    2 ай бұрын

    It really depends on your behavior when they’re around, and if you’re chopping trees *in* their territory. It also depends on if you’ve previously been hostile with then. But generally speaking, they’ll stick to mostly being curious with the occasional testing of your resolve to see what you’ll do. If you stick to a nomadic lifestyle, run from canibals whenever you see them, they’ll mostly leave you alone. I once made it 17 days without a single fight with a canibal. But that requires alot of patience and the ability to not hit a canibal when one just thwacked you across the head. But if you’ve been well behaved, not chopping trees will make them not so prone to be aggressive. But that also depends on the temperament of the tribe and the individual AI tribesmen your dealing with.

    I love the multiplayer, my best friend and I play it quite often and we refer to it as "going to the cottage" as if we're just going for a nice summer vacation, referring to the cannibals as our neighbours etc. We played it for like 70 in game days until the save got lost, and we had been to the bottom of the sinkhole but never set foot inside the research facility because we didn't want to go save Timmy... 😂 We spend so much time building multiple bases with increasing complexity and we love it, I love how I can have fun with my best friend like that even after she moved out of town and I can't see her as often anymore.

    When you have tree regrowth turned on, you can prevent a tree from regrowing by destroying the stump. Trees also always fall away from you, so if you face away from your base when you finish chopping, it won't fall on your base unless it bounces off of another tree. Walking around trees also don't chop them faster btw. It looks like it would, but it takes the same amount of chops even if you stand still, so the only reason to circle a tree is to keep an eye out for mutants.

    I *strongly* recommend playing the Forest in the order Charl lists. If you skip base building and go for the caves early on, then the great cave gear makes combat pretty trivial and ruins any scariness the game had. I definitely wish I'd built a big base my first time, so I could really fuck around with the natives while I was still underpowered.

    Though it might detract from some fun in the game, building a large base is entirely optional. I got through the whole game with 2 boathouses and a few tree houses spread out through the island. Went for a more nomadic/stealth approach and only fought when absolutely necessary or in caves. If you learn to hunt with the bow, you'll never run out of food. Only needed some water collectors and drying racks in each base. Avoiding the mutants whenever possible saves you a LOT of trouble and resources. I know you miss out on the base defense minigame, but I was more into the cave exploration
