Outlast is Red Barrel's indie horror extravaganza where we find out just how screwed up can your game be and still only receive an M rating on the ESRB. Outlast and Outlast 2 follow the antics of investigative journalists and one very unlucky Whistleblower delving into the dealings of the ever-shady Murkoff Corporation and learning about all the wacky psi-ops stuff going on with Project Walrider.
Come say hi in the Discord, we play games together on Saturday. / discord
So now we've got not one but two Outlast titles on the way in the form of Outlast: Trials, which will hopefully come along next year and then there's the inevitable Outlast 3 which will come out... eventually. Meanwhile we've still got the first two games, the Whistleblower DLC, and the Outlast Comic series, Outlast: The Murkoff Account, which you can read for free on Red Barrel's website over at redbarrelsgames.com/comic-books/
Chapters:
00:00 intro
00:40 intro to the outlast series
01:41 Outlast
07:05 Outlast Story Discussion (spoilers)
09:07 Outlast: The Whistleblower
10:42 Cooking Segment: The Idiot's Carbonara

16:18 Outlast 2

ACTUALLY FOR REAL FUCK THAT. If they really thought you were a hero, they'd give you at least THREE water bottles... And y'know, hazard pay, that previously mentioned bonus, and maybe a restructuring of the shift schedule to allow for extra rest periods in order to avoid Frontline worker burnout. We can't beat this thing if all the Frontline workers keep collapsing from exhaustion.

@THE NEWMAKER a month late but I felt like saying... Personally I hate overpowered generic children MCs. You get to watch as theyre handed everything to make them busted, you get filler, training montages, crying about friendship and a swingset with a promise to a childhood friend. I don't care for any of that. If you've seen one of the shows that has any of those things, you've seen them all for the most part. Overlord is nice because he is what the name implies much like how OPM is what the name implies. They've did all the building up, they've already had the things to get them to be OP, now we get to see what they do with their hand of cards as opposed to seeing them get dealt (so to speak). As a side note I seriously hate stories where all the adults are completely incompetent and the kids do everything. I cant stand it.

I’m of the opinion that Whistleblower was the peak of the series. 1 was good for a popcorn slasher experience in video game form, Whistleblower was that, but more condensed, making it better, and 2 *tried* to be a good sequel, but the level design just didn’t work with the gameplay they had. The school sections were cool, though. Shame they’re the least important parts of the story.

Outlast is everything i want a game studio to do. A bold, refined and thought out game. It's not even so much about the video game, it's about the mindset. Red Barrels were a completely new studio that no one ever heard of until Outlast and they made a really bold move to publish a game like Outlast and it paid off. Surely, all the other AAA companies can afford to make a bold move like that.

I beg to differ. In my opinion what Outlast 2 fails at compared to the first game (namely its characters) it makes up for in its pure atmosphere. There is something far more terrifying about collective insanity than individual, and Outlast 2 gets that down to a tee. Though the school sections were a bit weird, I think the game shined when you were stuck in this completely remote village full of insane cultists, and when you get to the HERETIC CAVES it becomes something like a fever-dream esque nightmare that was far more effective at feeling like you've lost touch with reality than the literally school hallucination moments. I mean, imagine an entire townsworth of people all equally as crazy as one another wanting nothing more than to hunt you down and butcher you in the name of their cause. That to me is far more disturbing than just being chased by a crazy mental patient who wants to eat you or something perverse or on-the-nose like that. Also, all confusing story-beats have pretty much been explained by now, and when you have the full picture its actually quite entertaining. I think a lot of people didnt like it because it had very little relation to the first game as opposed to just accepting the fact that this was mostly a separate story. A lot of people dont like it but I consider O2 a real gem in the rough.

@@alt0799 I don’t find outlast 2 that scary as compared to outlast 1, but damn did that game have a very well setting. I’m not talking about the villages or the deep dark mines, the lake or the scalled camp (which was the most boring and shittiest chapter), I’m talking about the mine building in chapter 4 with blood rain and the school segments. Chapter 4 was the scariest in my opinion, the mines felt boring and especially on my insane run. Heretics chase were intense with you running out of stamina and their constant shrieks, the theme that plays (i think it was a chopper variant ost) when you see the sky raining blood was creepy and sets the atmosphere very well. Then you further move and see the mangled bodies hung at the entrance of the building with the guy looking hollow and skeletal in appearance who has a hook piercing in his cheeks (not those cheeks) gives you the idea of how heretics are. The school segments are the best in this game, I just wished there were more of demon Loutermilch patrolling the school instead of just scripted sequences. I honestly find the dry land of Arizona a lot less scarier than a giant asylum because there are many ways you can hide or survive in that place, In fact blake had a better chance of running away from there as compared to Miles or Waylon, unless you know the asylum very well you are very limited to survive especially against variants like Chris Walker or Richard Trager who literally knew every way and corner of the asylum.

Outlast 2 has to be the nastiest and most violent game i've ever played, only The Last Of Us 2 comes close in terms of violence, i wanted to take a shower after each session. I respect Red Barrels for not pulling back on anything. It's sad that i found it to be such a frustrating experience; this could have been a masterpiece but it wasn't. The gameplay is good, but the level design leaves way to much room for trial and error, and in a horror game with so many chase sequences and focus on tension, it becomes annoying and frustrating. The main story was interesting but the subplot involving the catholic school was pointless and you can see the twist coming from miles. The main story could have been great if they have decided to make it it's own thing instead of connecting it to the previous games, but that's just me. Anyways, the game it's fine but could have so much better in my opinion.

We used to occasionally talk and play stuff way back in the Brote days with a small side group. Anyway, keep up the good work! I love these kinds of longer analysis/retrospective videos.

Before watching: I love outlast. The first one was great, whistleblower was also great! But the second one was a pile of garbage that had no backing for its horror other than “it’s scary”. I’m somewhat looking forward to the Outlast Trials, because it seems their stopping with the stupid paranormal shit form the second game, and going back to what the first game did. But I’m not insanely excited about it. Edit after watching: good video. Good points, nice opinions. Also I’m gonna go make that dish right now that genuinely looks good

dreadlordhg no it hasn’t. Outlast’s horror was explained through science, the walrider was NOT a ghost, he was simply a collection of nanobots connected to an Insane host. Outlast was NEVER about the supernatural lmfao, but Outlast 2 was, and it took it WAY too far. Outlast 2 tries so damn hard to be scary that it’s not scary at all

  • @dreadlordhg360

THE NUMB SKULL Supernatural as in extraordinary, not ghostly. Everything in Outlast 2 is explained through the same means, the only difference being it’s centred around a cult. Like Outlast, Outlast 2 is explained through science as well because most people have been exposed to a newer morphogenic engine.

  • @the_numb_skull

    @the_numb_skull

dreadlordhg and you know where it’s explained? Not in the main story, not in a cutscene, not by a character, it’s all explained in a note, a single note towards the end of the game that’s so well hidden you would have to be purposefully looking for it to fund it... that’s NOT how you provide exposition. Outlast 2 was a dumpster fire in every way anyone who played the first game on release and then played the second game will tell you that. It’s not scary, it tries too hard. It’s not interesting, it provides more questions than answers(and the answers don’t ever make sense). And it’s shocking only for the sake of being shocking, there’s no rhyme or reason to its material, it’s only all just there for the sake of being there “because it’s scary”. So no, everything in outlast 2 is NOT explained through the same means.

If your playing the game for a first time, any normal person is gonna assume it’s all paranormal, because that’s how the game presents itself. It’s not grounded in reality like true first one was. Which is why I’m somewhat looking forward to Trials, because it seems more grounded in reality than the garbage that was the second game. “Why is it raining blood”? Because it’s scary. “Why is it swarming locusts?” Because it’s scary. “Why is the water blood?” Because it’s scary. And it’s all explained to be the morphogenic engine... in a hidden note. It’s lazy writing, pure and simple. It’s almost as bad as “it was all just a Dream”

An interesting thing is the devs were smart enough to either know or research that IR Nightvision exists. When you say "Nightvision", everyone thinks of the typical green type, which works by taking in the natural surrounding light and amping it. That means, however, if a night is particularly dark due to no moon or a obscured moon and/or being under some form of cover, that style of nightvision is effectively useless since as most know, nothing times anything equals nothing. IR Nightvision on the other hand, uses an artificial IR light to produce it's own light. IR is invisible to the naked eyes so it doesn't break the effects of hiding in the darkness, the whole "I can see you but you can't see me." thing.

I'd like to see a third main installment return to the confined "Haunted house" routes. The first game felt like one of those elaborate x-rated haunt attractions except you can actually get killed. Maybe some kind of isolated mansion estate would be a good setting for that so we don't repeat the whole Asylum/Prison thing.
