The Ford Maverick Is A Pickup Meant To Be Hacked. Here’s How Ford Designed It For That.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Ford’s new Maverick compact pickup is turning out to be a smash hit. One big reason? Flexibility. The engineers designed the affordable trucklette from the ground up to be easily customized by owners. Want to install an air compressor or LED lighting in the bed. Easy. Need to haul bikes but can’t afford an expensive rack? Ford has easy-to-follow instructions on how to build one on a budget. And it tows up to two tons. With respect to Paul Simon, there must be 50 ways to hack your Maverick. Tom Voelk offers a deep dive on what the designers were thinking, and some of the DIY ideas the engineers have come up with.

    Nice to see a budget-friendly vehicle designed to be really functional. Most others tend to focus on wowing people with a fancy entertainment center and many screens. I think the Maverick will be a home run for Ford. They would sell even more if the hybrid could be had with AWD.

    Ford may have may have given up on the sedan marketplace but there's no question that they know how to design, build, and sell trucks! The Maverick's most obvious competitor, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, may be an appealing vehicle for consumers wanting an open bed version of a compact SUV but even Hyundai recoils from labelling it a "truck." They call the Santa Cruz is a "Sports Activity Vehicle, an SAV. Not so from Ford. No, Sir-ee. The Maverick wears its "truck" label proudly. From a sales standpoint, the Maverick is a brilliant vehicle. Every trim level is available with a 2.5L hybrid engine or a 2.0L turbo . MSRPs begin at $20K and top out in the low $30K neighborhood. And though it's not often mentioned individual consumers aren't the only source of revenue. The Maverick will sell like hotcakes to fleets, large and small. For businesses that need economical vehicles for local missions involving cargo, the hybrid versions of the Maverick are a godsend. Need to deliver drywall to a construction site? No need to use a full size F150. The hybrid Maverick can do the job at a fraction of the cost.

    When I first saw the Maverick my first thought was city fleets. I see City owned trucks all the time, everywhere I go. Suddenly there's a small truck that gets excellent gas mileage, and still offers loads of utility? I wouldn't be surprised if the Maverick dominated the fleet market in the near future. But I was also surprised how much I liked it myself when I got the chance to sit in one. It felt really livable.

    Another DIY friendly aspect of this truck is Ford released the FITS geometry to the hobby 3D printing community so there are tons of free designs on the various 3D model repositories across the internet. It was actually this act that brought the Maverick to my attention. I'm in the market for a new vehicle (specifically looking for a hybrid) and am now interested in the Maverick. Unfortunately for me the demand so out stripped availability that Ford stopped taking new custom orders for the hybrids back in November and I only started looking at cars in the past month... I'll have to wait for the '23 model year to customize my own (will be looking to build something similar to the XLT Luxe w/ CoPilot360 and a few other dealer installed options for under $30k).

    The biggest issues I see with it right now are the lack of an AWD hybrid option (yes, I understand that Ford almost always holds things back at launch but it seems they REALLY misjudged the demand for the hybrid.) and the current $3,000 to $10,000 dealer markups over MSRP. I'll just wait until the insanity settles down and Ford to get around to offering AWD on the hybrid. (It's available on Escape hybrid so it's just a matter of them adapting it to Maverick.)

Now we have the Maverick (which was a car!) and Santa Cruz too which is great for those looking for an alternative to the typical SUV solution. I love that there are hardly any packages with this vehicle. Try getting a cheap, single cab puckup with a diesel. Oh wait, that's in a $15k trim level, is now lifted and supercabed!

    That comment about the center console being low to make it feel bigger is a big one. Years ago we went to check out a new Escalade and the center console was so huge we didn't even bother with a test drive. What's the point of a big vehicle that feels cramped? Unfortunately a lot of full size trucks and big SUVs are that way. More space than they know what to do with.

    The interior is actually bigger than a Toyota Tacoma. I am 6'1" and 240lbs. I am EXTREMELY comfortable in it! And the heated steering wheel is a great thing I have never had before.

    Nice video, thanks! One thing I can't seem to find is what in the world is that little cubbie thing to the right of the radio? It doesn't hold anything, it seems it's a waste of space. I notice that non of the "officials" talk about it, but a lot of the reviews I've watched comment on that space. Does anyone use it for anything? Why no just make the radio a few inches bigger, which would make it look a lot better as well.

    Yeah, a lot of writers just make fun of it. It's not half bad for a taco. In the future, the display might grow. But that would add $ to the price right now and this is a budget truck.

    They missed the bed width by 1/2"!!! As a cabinet maker this truck was the perfect fit for until I went to pick up some 4 x 8 sheets of 3/4'' melamine. They come in at 49'' x 97'' to allow for trimming and do not fit in this bed as designed for plywood. I hope Ford will fix this in a future model when I will sell my current Maverick to have that 1/2''!!!

    At 10:27 it shows a 2x4 beneath the plywood, what is that doing precisely?

  • @AbeIsLincoln

    @AbeIsLincoln

    5 ай бұрын

    The 2x4 allows you to clear the wheel wells with something long like an 8' piece of plywood. The 2x4 matches the hight of the tailgate when the tailgate is set at an angle, allowing you to evenly put plywood/drywall etc. over the top of the wheel wells.

Now with a second baby on the way, the Maverick has peeked my interest... howeveeeer, living up here in NE, they Jack the prices up due to weather conditions. Starts at "$20,000" , here will be starts at "$27,000". And yes, checked my local dealer. 1 in stock, base trim $26,150 ha
